:-)

I was once in a store where the muzak equivalenet was
provided by an FM radio mounted up on a pillar, tuned
to the local "soft rock" station. (Soft rock: the muzak
of the '90s.) I guess a lot of the employees were muzak
haters, since the radio had a handmade sign taped to it:
"Do NOT change the station!"

Pet peeve: such radios (whether playing muzak or not)
with a single speaker at one end of the store hooked up
to the left channel, and another single speaker at the
other end of the store hooked up to the right channel.
This guarantees that no matter where you are,
you're only going to hear half the music.

Ugh. I can't imagine being exposed to that stuff day in and
day out. It's toxic, and will turn your brain into guacamole.
But aside from that, you have to feel sorry for the musicians
who actually record the stuff. Could you imagine using your
talents playing music that nobody will ever really _listen_ to?
As for semi-audible music, it drives me nuts - an unreasonably
large portion of my brain devotes itself to trying to figure out
what's playing, leaving me mentally exhausted and pissed off.

In the late '90s / early noughties, a cow orker was into the
local "soft rock" station (Vancouver's first FM station, which
had been playing muzak since about 1958, had gone over to the
'90s counterpart, see above). I brought my own radio and a set
of headphones to work, and treated them as life-support equipment.
When anyone asked, I explained that I didn't want to spend my time
cleaning up my radio after Mariah Carey had bled all over it.

Back around 1980 I came across the real thing, in a storefront with
a sign saying "Music by Muzak". At any time of the day or night you
could look through the window and see huge tape reels slowly turning...

See also the documentary movie "American Factory" about how a Chinese
owned multi-national car glass company tried to open a factory in a
former GM plant in Ohio. (Around 2015, IIRC)

Or the 1985 comedy "Gung Ho" about a fictional Japanese auto company
setting up shop in Pennsylvania.

You must have been very popular with the women at that time? I imagine
very strict, conservative southern beauties, and there you are, quiet the

Blacks are fortunate there is no tribal structure. The Indians are quite
picky about who gets on the tribal roll. That's especially true if the
tribe has a casino or some other benefits to being a recognized member.
Elizabeth Warren didn't qualify.

Today that video would get Cher dragged down Main Street behind the horse
for so many different reasons. Cher claimed to be 1/16th Cherokee but I
think she backed down later. My ex also claims to have Cherokee ancestry
and I humor her. Many make similar claims and somehow it's always
Chreokee. Personally I am 0%; no tribal money for me.

The delays with TSMC's Arizona plant weren't a comedy. I think half the
workforce is still from Taiwan.

No eastern Europeans? iirc they often were the villains in the Wallander
series. although I think he also wrote about the Muslims. I know one
author had a glowing description of Malmö. I think Larsson was too busy
being a Communist to notice the real problem.

My ex'es lineage includes a couple that moved from South Carolina to the
Texas panhandle in stages through the decade of "the trail of tears".
The assumption among family historians was that the wife was Cherokee,
but there is no hint of links to the tribal rolls. He probably didn't
see any advantage to it. since he was quite successful. "He arrived in
the (TX) panhandle with a wagon and the oxen that pulled it, and by the
time he died, he owned 29 3/4 sections of range land. He never spent
money on anything but buying land and expanding his cattle herd."

We loved the story, but we never felt any pull towards claiming benefits
from Indian heritage. Except for my niece, who put a 1/16th native blood
on her college application - she needed all the scholarships she could
find.

My daughter, on the other hand, noted on her application that she was
(1) a Daughter of the American Revolution through her mother (descended
from John Alden of the Mayflower) and (2) the child of an immigrant
through me. Just for fun. She is of course also a dual national from
birth and has lived abroad 3 times. (A year at age 5, a year at age 16,
and recently 6 months at age 36.)

This mythical "probably a bit of Cherokee" is quite common in the
Texas/Oklahoma borderlands, and I don't hold it against anyone.

Heh, heh ... it'd make a fun sci-fi short story :-)

But what would eventually-passing aliens THINK of
us upon hearing an endless muzak track ???

Well, communications CAN be a problem ... can't expect
all workers to learn Japanese, Chinese or English. Some
of the latest tech can help a bit, but it's not smooth.

Hmmm ... maybe a 'virtual factory' where all parts
aren't on the same continent. Govts won't like it
but for practical issues ......
