Oh, I certainly do smile at the one-timers who chose that course, for
they were usually stepping up to take an opportunity to make a better
life for themself (and many did).

That's because for nearly all of them, they grew up and today have a
healthy perspective about their time in, understanding that it was just
a chapter in their life from 30 years ago that's in the past, not to be
regaled at the VFW every friday night while wearing "Iron Man" PJ's.

The media is very powerful and those who control the media control the people.
That aside, at some point I did watch a program where they compared military spec guns for the
elite like snipers, seal team, etc to the civilian versions and the conclusions were that the
military versions were far superior but only in the hands of a skilled, trained person.

It would be like giving Serena Williams tennis racquet to even an above average tennis player.
Will it really improve her game?
Doubtful.

A handy perl verb, to be sure.

For those who don't want to refer to perlfunc(1), it removes
the terminating line ending from a line ($_ by default), but
only if it _is_ a newline. "chop" takes the last character,
regardless if it's a newline or not.

Incidentally, I've re-thought this, and decided it might work better
to grab xover data from the nntp server -- saves the effort of
fighting with leafnode to get the articles, and avoids the overhead
of getting entire articles. Having said that, I'm unmotivated to
haul-off and do it.
