Edward Muhammad Johnson

STILLWATER, Minn. – A convicted killer beat a Minnesota prison guard to death with a hammer he checked out of the prison shop and stabbed him with a homemade knife during an attack last month, prosecutors alleged Thursday.

Prosecutors charged Edward Muhammad Johnson, 42, in Washington County court with second-degree murder and second-degree assault. He is scheduled to appear in court Friday.

Johnson is accused of fatally beating 45-year-old Officer Joseph Gomm with a hammer on July 18 at a state prison in Stillwater.

The attack happened in an industrial building housing the vocational programs at the state's flagship prison. A bloody hammer was found on the floor near the fatally injured Gomm, the complaint said.

Johnson also is accused of swinging the hammer at a corrections employee who is a prison shop foreman. The foreman told investigators an inmate approached him and said Gomm needed help. The foreman went into the shop and saw Johnson hitting Gomm in the head with a hammer, and retreated when Johnson swung the hammer at him, the complaint said. Johnson then shut the shop door and barricaded it, according to the complaint.

Several inmates saw a shirtless Johnson running around the shop and telling them, "You guys are fine," which apparently meant he did not intend to hurt them, the complaint said. After finding the shop door barricaded, correctional officers entered through a different door and saw Johnson, who surrendered. Correctional officers told investigators that inmates often will remove their shirts when they are involved in a fight.

Besides the hammer, investigators also found two homemade knives, one or both of which was used to stab Gomm, who suffered two puncture wounds to his chest, the complaint said.

Johnson was serving a 29-year sentence for fatally stabbing his roommate in 2002. Gomm, who had just marked 16 years as a correctional officer, is believed to be the first Minnesota correctional officer killed while on duty. His funeral last week drew thousands of law enforcement officers.

Following Gomm's death, union leaders representing Minnesota corrections workers called for more prison officers.

More than 1,600 inmates are housed at the century-old Stillwater prison. About a third of the prisoners are serving time for homicide.

A New Hope man was charged with murder on May 5 after he allegedly stabbed a man near a Brooklyn Center apartment complex.

Demetrius Harris, 28, was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of Antonio Moore.

According to the criminal complaint, the stabbing followed a case of domestic assault, where Moore, a 37-year-old St. Louis Park man, was attempting to defend his sister

Harris has a previous relationship with Moore’s sister and the two have a child together.

At approximately 9:30 p.m. on May 2, Harris had been in Moore’s sister’s apartment at Twin Lake North Apartments when the two began to fight.

Moore’s sister got a phone call from another man, which upset Harris. He then punched her twice in the face.

She attempted to throw him out of her apartment and called her brother to ask for help. She threw Harris’ belongings into the hallway and locked him out.

Moore arrived at the apartment complex and his sister went outside to meet him.

Harris was waiting outside between the parking garages at the complex.

When Moore confronted Harris about assaulting his sister, the two engaged in a fistfight.

Police allege Harris then stabbed Moore in the abdomen.

Harris told Moore’s sister to call an ambulance and fled the scene.

Responding officers did not immediately locate Harris. However, a resident in a nearby apartment complex called 911 to report a trespasser.

The trespasser was Harris, who Brooklyn Center police eventually found hiding in the laundry room, the complaint said.

Police arrested Harris and booked him in the Hennepin County Jail. The district court put his bail at $500,000.

Moore was transported to the North Memorial Health Hospital emergency room. According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s office, he was pronounced dead at 10:11 p.m.

“My thoughts today are with the victim’s family, and especially his sister who he was protecting during this incident,” said Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty. “We will not tolerate violence in our communities. I’m grateful to the Brooklyn Center Police Department for working quickly to respond to the scene, identify the person responsible, and apprehend him. We will now aggressively prosecute this case to hold Mr. Harris accountable.”

PHOENIX –David Michael Hanson, 41, of Phoenix, was arrested on Wednesday
for making online threats against the President and Vice-President.
Hanson was charged by Federal criminal complaint on Tuesday with five
counts of Threats Against the President and Successors to the Presidency
and five counts of Interstate Communication of Threats.

The complaint alleges that in November and December of 2023, while
living in Arizona, Hanson used a social media platform to post threats
to murder the President and Vice President of the United States. On
November 19, 2023, Hanson posted online a series of threatening
statements including one that stated, “#joeAndKamala I’m asking you to
resign on Monday your alternative is death brutally murdered.” After the
U.S. Secret Service spoke to Hanson and warned him that it was a Federal
crime to post such threats, on December 23, 2023, Hanson posted another
series of similar threats aimed at the President and Vice-President.

The Bloomington man who fatally shot a 15-year-old girl near Lake of the Isles last year has been sentenced to 12-and-a-half years in prison.

Antonio Brooks Jr., 20, pleaded guilty on Sept. 6 to the 2nd-degree unintentional murder of Ka’Maih Johnson near the intersection of Girard Avenue S. and 25th St. W. in July 2023. He was sentenced on Friday to 150 months in prison.

"My thoughts are with Ka’Maih’s family," Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said.

"She should still be with her family. Instead, the community has lost another young person to gun violence. Mr. Brooks will be held accountable for his actions, but we must do more at every level to reduce the terrible impact of gun violence in our communities."

According to the criminal complaint, one of Johnson's friends told police they were driving around the area with three boys that night when Brooks Jr. texted her, and they agreed to meet up.

Johnson's friend told investigators they were "laughing, joking and making videos with [Brooks Jr.] when [he] stated. 'I'm going to shoot you all up,'" the complaint states.

The friend said Brooks Jr. had made similar statements in the past, but he never followed through. However, when speaking with police, In an interview, she said Brooks Jr. stated: "You think I'm playing? I'm gonna shoot this [b**ch] up."

She told police that she and Johnson got out of the SUV that Brooks Jr. had arrived in and headed back to the original car they came in. Moments later, the shot was fired.

When police arrived at the scene, they found Johnson lying in the street of 25 1/2 Street and Girard Avenue South, with a gunshot wound to her chest. She was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS responders.

Investigators spoke to four witnesses, who all said they heard the gunshot, and at least two witnesses saw Brooks Jr. raise the gun.

According to the complaint, one witness told police he saw Johnson "laughing and running away from [Brooks Jr.]" when he heard the gunshot, charges state.

Another witness told police that Johnson was hanging out of an open window in the back of the car when the shot was fired, and both vehicles sped off. She said she didn't know Johnson had been shot and was left behind at the scene, prompting her to ask Brooks Jr. to pick her up.

Brooks Jr. said he would, but that he needed to drop off the gun first.

However, the boys the witness had initially arrived with picked her up later and told her Johnson had been shot and taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center.

The complaint states that the witness contacted Brooks Jr., who allegedly "acknowledged his involvement in the shooting and apologized." He allegedly deactivated his Facebook account and blocked the witness' cell phone number and social media accounts.

A warrant for his arrest was issued on August 10, 2023, and he was arrested a day later.
