Two Minnesota Correctional Facility-Oak Park Heights inmates have been charged with assaulting three correctional officers in March.

Curtez Graham, 28, and Jeremy Carpenter, 26, are accused of being involved in the scuffle that was reportedly started by one of the inmates spitting on a correctional sergeant.

One of the officers was knocked unconscious and the sergeant suffered several bone fractures to his nose.

According to the criminal complaint, on March 7 at 5:24 p.m., Graham and Carpenter were approached by the correctional sergeant, who told Carpenter to return to his cell. Carpenter spat in the sergeant's face and kicked him, causing him to fall backward onto an ice machine.

The sergeant was then punched in the head by Graham, sending the sergeant to the ground.

Two other correctional officers responded, with the complaint saying Graham punched another correctional officer with so much force that it left the officer unconscious.

Another officer approached Graham and Carpenter punched him in the head, also causing him to hit the ground.

A chemical irritant was deployed by other officers and Graham and Carpenter were restrained.

The sergeant suffered multiple nasal bone fractures and required stitches to close up an open wound to the bridge of his nose. He has since undergone multiple procedures as a result.

"Even six months after the incident, [the sergeant] continues to experience post-concussion symptoms consistent with a traumatic brain injury," the complaint says.

The second officer knocked unconscious also suffered "multiple nasal bone fractures," while the third officer assaulted had "obvious facial redness in the area of the punches that was observed by other prison staff."

DOC records show that Graham has been convicted of 1st-degree criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping. He was sentenced on Nov. 19, 2013. Carpenter was previously involved with an assault of an officer at the Stillwater prison in 2015 and was serving a sentence for 2nd-degree murder at the time of the March assault.

Both are charged with 3rd-degree assault, aiding and abetting 3rd-degree assault and aiding and abetting 4th-degree assault against a correctional employee. If convicted, Graham faces a maximum of 12 additional years to serve in prison, as well as a $24,000 fine. Carpenter faces a maximum of nine additional years to serve, as well as an $18,000 fine.

It was one of multiple assaults at Minnesota Correctional Facility-Oak Park Heights and nearby MCF-Stillwater over a course of weeks in the spring.

In a week's span in March, seven corrections officers were wounded in three separate attacks at both Oak Park Heights and Stillwater prison. One officer was left blind in one eye following an attack by an inmate in January as well.

The Minnesota prison inmate who partially blinded a corrections officer in a brutal attack last year has been sentenced to an additional 15 years behind bars.

Dominique Antoine Jefferson, 37, pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree assault for attacking a correctional sergeant at Minnesota Correctional Facility–Oak Park Heights in January 2023.

According to the charges, the attack happened after Jefferson asked to speak to a member of the prison's crisis intervention team. After a "brief exchange of words," the sergeant instructed Jefferson to return to his cell — at which time he took a clear plastic mouthguard out of his pocket, placed it in his mouth, told the sergeant to "ring the bell" and said, "I've been waiting for you."

When the sergeant reached for her radio to call for assistance, Jefferson punched her in the right eye with a closed fist, causing her to fall to the floor. Other officers quickly restrained Jefferson, "who continued to verbally assault and threaten them," a news release from the Washington County attorney says.

The release also notes the "significant" injuries and difficult recovery the officer has endured since:

The sergeant was transported by ambulance to Regions Hospital where she was found to have significant damage to her right eye and numerous facial fractures. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries, the injuries sustained from the attack caused irreparable damage and resulted in the permanent loss of vision in her right eye. She also required additional surgical procedures to repair the fractures to her facial bones and continues to see medical providers for follow-up care.

“In a profession already burdened with the challenges of ensuring safety and order, correctional officers should never have to face the added threat of violence,” said Washington County Attorney Kevin Magnuson in a statement. “We commend the courageous correctional sergeant for her resilience in the face of adversity, and we continue to prioritize our commitment to pursuing justice in support of the safety and well-being of those who serve within our correctional facilities.”

Jefferson has been incarcerated at Minnesota Correctional Facility–Oak Park Heights since 2005 for aiding and abetting second-degree murder. The release says his 15-year assault sentence will begin when he has finished the term of imprisonment for the 2005 sentence.

TEMPE, AZ — An arrest was made Friday morning in connection with a sexual assault earlier this month at Arizona State University.

ASU police chief Michael Thompson said Eric Bell was taken into custody around 8 a.m. at his Mesa home. According to Thompson, Bell has an extensive criminal history out of Ohio and his DNA was a match with DNA found at the crime scene in Tempe.

ASU police said the sexual assault happened on the morning of Oct. 17 near Packard Drive and Veterans Way.

Bell reportedly grabbed the victim from behind and held a metal knife-like object to her throat. The victim was then taken to an unknown location near the Packard parking structure where Bell is accused of sexually assaulting her, police said.

According to initial information from police, the suspect then pressed a gun-like object into the victim's back and left the area.

U.S. Marshals and Tempe police assisted ASU police in the investigation and in Bell's apprehension Friday morning.

ASU Police Chief Michael Thompson says he was proud of the collaborative efforts between various law enforcement agencies, to put Bell behind bars.

“Mr. Bell has an extensive criminal history out of the state of Ohio. We are currently conducting search warrants at his residence right now, and collecting any kind of weapons,” said Chief Thompson.

Thompson said neither Bell nor the victim are affiliated with ASU.

Lindsy Myers tells ABC15, when she was an undergrad at ASU, she would never walk alone. Now, as a graduate student, she says nothing has changed.

“I actually have pepper spray too just in case because it did get scary there for a while. And I have this like alarm thing where if you pull the keychain, you know, it's really loud and it sounds loud. There are little checkpoints on campus that have buttons where it'll alert someone,” said Meyers.

According to ASU’s crime stats reported to the federal government, in 2019 there were 23 rapes and 15 reported fondling incidents.

In 2020, those numbers went down to 17 rapes and 9 reports of fondling.

Bell is facing charges for sex crimes, kidnapping and assault.

The FBI is searching for a Florida man, who also has ties to Philadelphia, in connection with the rape of an 8-year-old at a Delaware YMCA earlier this summer.

The alleged incident unfolded on June 13 at the YMCA Handby Outdoor Center located in Wilmington, the FBI said in a press release on Tuesday.

Nehemiah Billie J’Len Garcia is accused of luring an unidentified child into a shower at the facility, where he then “held” the victim “against their will” and “raped” them, according to authorities.

Officials launched an investigation into Garcia after they uncovered surveillance video, which shows him entering the YMCA the same night as the alleged rape.

A warrant was issued for Garcia’s arrest at the end of June, after he was charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, the FBI said. Garcia is also facing two counts of first-degree rape and two counts of dangerous crime against a minor under 14 involving criminal sexual conduct.

The FBI warned Garcia should be “considered an escape risk.” The agency also requested that anyone with information in the case contact their local FBI office or the nearest American Embassy or Consulate.

In addition to Philadelphia, authorities said Garcia also has ties to Cape Canaveral, Fla.

A reward of $5,000 is being offered for details leading to Garcia’s arrest.

An 18-year-old was booked into the Montgomery County Detention Facility accused of raping a girl half his age.

According to court records filed Monday, Maricus Lemonte Addison was charged Saturday morning with first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy.

At some point between 8 a.m. and midnight Friday, Addison allegedly raped the 9-year-old girl at a home on LeBron Road.

A warrant was issued against Addison about 4:45 a.m.Saturday and hours later he was arrested.

Addison remained in the county jail Monday with a combined $90,000 bond.

The sergeant was taken via ambulance to Regions Hospital, where she was found to have "significant damage" to her right eye as well as multiple facial fractures.

"Despite undergoing multiple surgeries over the past several months, the injuries sustained from the attack have caused irreparable damage and resulted in the permanent loss of vision in her right eye," the Washington County Attorney's Office said in a press release. "She will also require additional surgical procedures to repair the fractures to her facial bones."

Jefferson is now charged with first-degree assault, which carries a sentence of up to 25 years in prison.

"Under no circumstance is the assault of a correctional officer tolerable, and the permanent harm that resulted from this assault is life-altering," said Department of Corrections Commissioner Paul Schnell."We stand in support of the sergeant who suffered this horrific injury and we are grateful to the Washington County Attorney's Office for their thoughtful review of this case, which resulted in these serious criminal charges."

Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, 25, was booked on three felony charges of criminal sexual conduct. He is free after posting a $100,000 bond, and will appear in court again in October.

WILLMAR — A Willmar man charged in a 2021 sexual assault is free on bond and is next scheduled to appear Oct. 8 in Kandiyohi County District Court.

Charges were filed in August 2023 against Mohamed Abullahi Mohamed, 25, for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in 2021. He was 22 years old at the time of the alleged assault, according to the filed criminal complaint.

Mohamed is charged with three felony counts of criminal sexual conduct, all alleging sexual penetration. One count in the first degree alleges fear of bodily harm. The two others are third-degree criminal sexual conduct, one of them alleging force or coercion.

Unconditional bail was set at $200,000 and bail with conditions at $100,000. He posted a $100,000 bond on Aug. 1. Conditions for Mohamed include turning over his passport within 24 hours after his release, having no contact with the alleged victim, and being barred from having unsupervised contact with minors under 18.

According to the criminal complaint, a Willmar police officer was dispatched to CentraCare — Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar during the evening of Sept. 9, 2021, on a report of sexual assault.

The officer met with a nurse who disclosed what a 14-year-old female patient had told her. The nurse also indicated she had completed a sexual assault evidence collection kit.

Accompanied by a sexual assault advocate and a guardian, the female patient told the officer that she and another girl were at a gas station on South First Street in Willmar. When she came back outside from buying a beverage, the other girl was talking to a man.

According to the complaint, the girl recalled she did not want a ride from the male, as he seemed suspicious, but the two girls ended up getting a ride from him.

The girl told the officer about the driver making phone calls and driving around several areas in Willmar, eventually picking up another man identified as Mohamed.

She said she was sitting in the backseat of the vehicle while the other girl was sitting in the front passenger seat. Mohamed sat next to her in the backseat.

They later parked, and the other girl got out.

She said another vehicle then pulled in behind them, the driver turned off the vehicle and got in the backseat with her and Mohamed. Two other males from the vehicle behind them got into their vehicle.

According to the complaint, one male entered the passenger side of the vehicle and held her arms as another male entered the driver side and tried to hold her legs. The girl told the officer that at one point Mohamed asked her if she wanted to have sex and she replied no.

As they were exiting the car, the girl said Mohamed allegedly told everyone to hold up before he got close to her and pulled down her pants.

The girl said she screamed and the two males who had entered the car fled. She said Mohamed sexually assaulted her for approximately five to 10 minutes, and the driver then sexually assaulted her for approximately the same amount of time.

According to the complaint, Mohamed and the girl's friend returned to the car, and the girl said the four of them drove to Marshall as if nothing had happened.

The girl was able to identify Mohamed for the officer using social media, and officers used surveillance video at the gas station to identify a car linked to Mohamed, according to the complaint.

When Mohamed was interviewed by law enforcement at his residence in Willmar in November of 2021, he said he did not know the two girls but had let them use his phone to find a ride and later gave them a ride to Marshall himself after he picked up a male friend, according to the complaint.

Mohamed denied asking either girl for sex and said he had not been given anything in exchange for the ride.

In June of 2022, according to the complaint, DNA analysis provided by the state crime lab confirmed a match between a known sample from Mohamed and DNA on a swab collected from the 14-year-old girl.

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the rape of a 13-year-old girl in a Queens park last week, according to police.

Christian Geovanny Inga-Landi, a 25-year-old Ecuadorian migrant who entered the U.S. illegally in June 2021, was picked up overnight after community members recognized him from a photo and video released by police, according to the New York Police Department.

Police said they restrained him, possibly with a belt, and roughed him up after he fought with his captors. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Inga-Landi waived his Miranda rights and told police he had a drug problem and had never done anything like this before, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny.

He was previously arrested in Eagle Pass, Texas, for entering the country illegally. He also had three summonses in New York City and a domestic violence encounter with police that did not result in arrest.

Inga-Lani has been charged with first-degree rape, first-degree sex abuse, first-degree robbery, first-degree menacing, second-degree kidnapping, first-degree unlawful imprisonment and other crimes.

NYPD Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry praised the community efforts that led to the suspect being taken into custody in an interview with New York ABC station WABC.

"The kids, children, principals and teachers can now go to school with a little more ease, and the family can have a sense of relief today," he said.

Reflecting on the investigation, Daughtry commended the bravery of the young victims and the community's support.

"The sketches from those brave kids were invaluable," he said. "Old-fashioned police work, combined with modern technology, helped us bring this case closer to resolution. The city's response was a resounding 'no' to this heinous crime."

The sexual assault took place at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday when two schoolmates, a 13-year-old male and a 13-year-old female, were approached by a man in Kissena Park. The man flashed what police described as a "large machete-style knife" and forced the 13-year-old victims to walk for several minutes into a wooded area.

The individual then forcibly removed the cellphones of both victims, tied the boy and girl's wrists together with a shoelace and sexually assaulted the female victim before fleeing the location on foot in an unknown direction.

The two 13-year-olds were taken to the hospital in stable condition after they returned to school to explain what happened.

Investigators recovered the shoelace used to tie the children's hands together, along with a water bottle the suspect left behind.

The individual being sought was described as a Hispanic male, approximately 5-foot-5, in his 20s, with curly hair and last seen wearing red sneakers and carrying a green backpack. He appeared to have dental braces and had a tattoo of a boar or a bull with red eyes on his chest.

"The entire police department is focused on getting justice for this young survivor," NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny said last week during a press conference.

The NYPD released photos of a person of interest late Monday and were offering a $10,000 reward for information in the case.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. - A North Carolina man pled guilty to second-degree rape and second-degree sex assault for attacks on two victims in April and June 1981.

The suspect, 67-year-old Marion Pearson, of Durham, NC, faces up to 17 years of executed prison time. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 19, 2024.

Detectives with the Montgomery County Police Cold Case Unit identified an open rape case from April 1981 in March 2022, and submitted evidence collected from the rape to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) for additional testing. A search of the FBI’s National DNA Index System (NDIS) connected the DNA to Pearson.

According to authorities, Pearson served 22 years in a North Carolina prison for a series of first-degree rapes and was released in 2020. He previously lived in Prince George’s County and was arrested several times for assault, indecent exposure, and peeping-tom, between 1980 and 1999.

"After more than four decades, the defendant is finally being held accountable for his violent actions in Montgomery County, Md. We thank the members of the Montgomery County Police Cold Case Unit for bringing closure to this case and hope the conviction can provide some comfort to the survivors of these crimes," State’s Attorney John McCarthy said.

A Cobb grand jury has indicted a Marietta man and a woman half his age for child cruelty and molestation, among a slew of other charges.

Brian Deshawn Phillips, 46, and Elizabeth Anne Cooley, 23, are accused of working in concert to molest an underage girl at an extended-stay hotel on Canton Road, near the Canton Road Connector and Interstate 75, over a period of two years.

Phillips is also accused of molesting other women at various locations throughout Cobb across that two-year span.

Of the 27 charges under which Phillips and Cooley are listed as co-defendants, they include charges of aggravated child molestation, trafficking persons for sexual servitude, rape and first degree cruelty to children.

According to a warrant for Phillips' arrest, he is accused of molesting a girl under the age of 16 by forcing her to perform various sex acts on him between January of 2021 and July of 2023 at the hotel on Canton Road.

Another warrant alleges Phillips sexually assaulted other underage girls from 2021 to 2023 at various different locations throughout Cobb, including an extended-stay hotel on Busbee Parkway, an apartment complex in Smyrna and other locations in Kennesaw and Marietta.

Phillips is also accused in that warrant of burglary for allegedly breaking into the home of a woman he then sexually assaulted.

Cooley is accused in a separate warrant of assisting Phillips in one of those acts between January 2021 and January 2022.

In another indictment handed down last week, Phillips is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of more than an ounce of marijuana.

In a different warrant from those detailing his alleged sex crimes, police wrote that Phillips was convicted in Broward County, Florida, in October 2003 of child fondling. Marietta police say they found a pistol on Phillips upon his arrest, hence the charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Police wrote in the warrant they also found more than 30 grams of what they suspected was marijuana in Phillips' nightstand at his Marietta apartment.

According to jail records from the Cobb County Sheriff's Office, Phillips and Cooley share a residence at the Laurel Hills Preserve Apartments on Bells Ferry Road, just southeast of Town Center mall.

Both were arrested Jan. 30 and have been held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center without bond since their arrests, jail records indicate.

An inmate who stabbed a Minnesota Department of Corrections sergeant in 2020 has been sentenced to an additional 10 years in prison on top of the sentence he's currently serving.

Adrian Dominique Bell, 35, previously pleaded guilty to 1st-degree assault after he stabbed the sergeant with a 5.5-inch metal shank during a fight on June 12, 2020 at Minnesota Correctional-Facility-Stillwater.

Bell is already serving just over 13 years in prison (161 months) for attempted 1st-degree murder.

According to the charges, Bell and another inmate became confrontational with staff over loss of privileges. During the argument, the other inmate lunged at a correctional sergeant and punched him in the head. More correctional staff responded to the area and attempted to restrain the inmate.

During the struggle, Bell "removed a shank from his pocket, ran up to the group, and stabbed a correctional sergeant in the lower torso," according to the criminal complaint.

The shank was made from a piece of "rigid, thin metal with a sharp tip and handle made from black fabric." Both Bell and the other inmate were detained soon after.

The sergeant and two other correctional officers were taken to Lakeview Hospital for treatment. All three were treated for visible injuries, including a puncture wound to the sergeant's lower torso.

Washington County Attorney Kevin Magnuson provided the following statement on the outcome:

"Inmate assaults on correctional officers are grave offenses that undermine the safety of our prison system and will not be taken lightly. We are grateful to the Minnesota Department of Corrections and the department's Office of Special Investigations for their dedicated efforts in bringing this case forward. Together, we remain resolute in our pursuit of justice for any acts of violence committed against our dedicated correctional staff."

MINNEAPOLIS - A Minneapolis man is charged with raping a 10-year-old girl in her apartment building in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood.

A criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County charges 34-year-old Ahmed Hersi Abdi with two counts of first degree criminal sexual conduct. If convicted, Abdi faces the prospect of spending more than 30-years of his life in jail.

"People are sad, they're shocked, and they're concerned for the welfare of the young girl, and they're looking saying, what happened? What could have been done differently?" Mohamud Noor, a Somali community leader and a former Minneapolis school board member, told KARE.

Minneapolis Police squads were called to the Riverside Plaza Apartments at on Sunday October 4 by an off-duty officer after witnesses told them a child had been sexually assaulted. They told police they heard screaming from a third floor hallway and saw a young girl crying. The witnesses said a man had pulled her pants down and done something to her.

The witnesses quickly found two off-duty Minneapolis officers were working security in a nearby building.

"The Somalian community who came across this girl in crisis stepped up and helped her," Minneapolis Police Dept. spokesperson John Elder told KARE.

"They trusted the officers enough to get them, to bring them into this situation to provide aid."

The little girl told officers that a man had followed her onto the elevator, and then into the third floor hallway. He asked her name, extended his hand to her and asked her to shake hands. The girl told police that the man then refused to let go, ordered her to turn around, pull down her tights and at that point sexually assaulted her.

She described her attacker as a dark skinned male with gray hair, a light mustache and a red and white striped shirt.

Police viewed videotape of the attacker and the girl entering the elevator together and identified their suspect as Abdi, he was located and arrested in St. Paul wearing the same clothing.

Elder said that the quick arrest of Abdi illustrates the value of community policing, the concept of officers getting out of patrol cars and having positive contacts with people in their patrol routes. That includes going to meetings and events, talking to people on foot patrols and spontaneous interactions such as joining a pickup basketball game in a park.

"If people trust their police department they're willing to call them, and so far this year our officers have logged more than 70,000 positive contacts."

Attacks involving strangers and children are relatively rare, and some in the Riverside Plaza area see it as an isolated case. But, just the same, the news of the rape sent a chill through the area.

"I'm a mom, and I have girls, and I do understand her pain," Fadumo Yusuf, who runs the East African Services non-profit, told KARE.

She said her daughter is the same age as the victim and goes to the same school.

"I couldn't believe it, and my daughter was so scared. She was saying, 'I cannot go anymore outside by myself'."

Yusuf said she expects the girl to receive counseling to get beyond the emotional scars left by the attack.

Noor said that the suspect, Ahmed Abdi, is a familiar face in the neighborhood and has complained of needing help for an untreated mental illness.

"You know it's somebody who is mentally ill, and he has been seeking help and services and we feel that there's a huge gap in mental health services, a huge unmet need."

By the same token, he said the community will embrace the victim and makes sure nobody treats her differently.
