Illinois? Troy High (NY) claims about 1100 students now. There may have

Technically the high school wasn't segregated but college entrance and
shop/business kids traveled in different circles. I remember one black
girl in my homeroom but I was in the EC (enriched curriculum) classes and
wasn't in a class with her or any other blacks. Our exposure was Mr.
Gibson, a Latin teacher however unlikely that seems.

A couple of black athletes were popular, or I should say, well known.
Outside of classes blacks and whites tended to self-segregate. I've found
this to be the case in general. I can't find any demographics from that
era but there weren't that many blacks in Troy. The figures for Albany are
3% in 1950, doubling to 6% in the '60s. Troy had even fewer although it
was up to 17.5% as people are displaced from Albany's gentrification.

The villages, or CDP to be accurate, where I grew up was 100% white,
counting a couple of Italians who we weren't too sure about. It's down to
98% white now so I guess a black family may have moved in.

That didn't prevent there being animosity during the '60s. The party
started with the Harlem riot in '64.

and escalated to the King riots in '68. I was out of high school by then
but still in Troy at RPI. NYC is only 150 miles from Troy and nobody
wanted it to spread. What had been a little friction in high school
escalated. I think it was in '65 with the Watts riots that the black
community in Troy became more militant. Luckily the smarter members
realized that if anything started it was going to go very badly.

'My Hometown' was about more than race relations. In the '60s Troy was
dying, the jobs were going and weren't coming back, leading to a lot of
pissed off white boys. Not a good time to start something when your whole
community lies in about 4 square blocks.

Ironically they tore the area down and built a senior complex where my
mother lived at the end of her life. I'd kid her that she'd finally made
it to Betty's Bar, a notorious bucket of blood.

Troy also went through the urban renewal process to create low income
housing. That went as well as it usually did. When I was back in 2004 the
apartments were either demolished or abandoned eyesores. Hochul has big
plans though.

No. The first part of the solution is to not blame race for what's
caused by poverty. If you've been paying attention in this thread you
would already know that it is poverty ~75% of the time, not race.

First, its not as far apart as you'd like to believe:

With Whites only being 59.3% of the population, this means that
(.101*.593) poor whites are 5.989% of the population.

Similarly, Blacks are 12.6%, so poor blacks (.208*.126) = 2.62%
And Hispanic and Latino are 18.9%, so they're (.176*.189) = 3.33%
Together, that's 5.85% ... basically half and half.

Second, one needs to also look at geographical distribution: are these
poor whites also resident in the urban centers where these city crime
reports are commonly coming from, or are they living out in more rural
areas cooking their meth and get reported on differently?

This is why one needs to understand the data and to normalize it
suitably if you're going to try to make comparison claims.

Billie Holiday summed it up. In the south they don't care how close you
get as long as you don't get too high. In the north they don't care how

In practical terms a northern liberal will vote for Harris but doesn't
want a black family moving in next door. I saw that in action growing up.
My mother was very sympathetic to the plight of Negroes (correct term in
that era) and when my father would call them niggers she would accuse him
of being Hitler. However, when we had a flat to rent she handled the
interviews. She was afraid if my father liked the family he would rent to
Negroes. She also though any Negroe male over 5 years old was going to try
