If you ever get a chance, watch Ben-Hur. There is a scene between Messala
(Stephen Boyd) and Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) where you think they're
getting ready to jump in bed with each other. Gore Vidal (definitely gay)
wrote the scene and provided stage direction. Boyd was in on the joke but
it went right over Heston's head.
