Trumps age has reshaped his campaign and his staff is desperate to hide
it
The effects of the former presidents age are visible in every major
decision taken by his campaign.

Old age should burn and rave at close of day, wrote the Welsh poet Dylan
Thomas. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. If Donald Trump has
ever read that poem an unlikely prospect, I think we can all agree he
certainly isnt living it. The former president has become a shadow of
himself in the home stretch, with the evidence of his flagging energy and
memory growing by the week.

At 78, Trump would be the oldest person ever elected to the presidency, so
its understandable that the issue of his age has been lurking at the edges
of his campaign since he announced his third run for the White House nearly
two years ago. It crept further into view when 81-year-old Joe Biden was
succeeded as the presumptive Democratic nominee by 59-year-old Kamala
Harris. On Saturday, Harris campaign released her medical records,
seeking to put the focus on Trump, according to NBC News.

Its not just you: He didnt sound like this in 2016.

Trumps age should be central to the closing stages of this race, not
because Harris wants it to be, but because there should be no debate
anymore over whether Trumps age would affect his presidency. In truth, it
has already dramatically altered his campaign and his staff is desperate
to pretend otherwise.

Not that anyone would blame his staff for trying to shelter Trump. Here is
a verbatim excerpt from his speech Thursday at the Detroit Economic Club:

Democrats dont want voter ID. You know why? Because they wanna cheat.
They dont wanna I say, Ohhh, they dont wanna. When I first I
thought I was seeing things, I thought I was ... like, I didnt hear that
when I first start this who theyd say, The Democrats will not approve
voter ID.

Its not just you: He didnt sound like this in 2016. And at this critical
phase of the presidential race, the effects of Trumps age are visible in
every major decision taken by his campaign.

Most obviously, the half-hearted gestures toward transparency about his
health seen in past campaigns have vanished, as have his boasts of acing
cognitive tests. Though Trump told CBS in August hed be happy to release
his medical records, the only recent public information is a one-page
letter that emerged after the assassination attempt in July. That letter,
by his disgraced former personal physician, Rep. Ronny Jackson, describes
the bullet wound he received but has no other details about his medical
condition.

We dont need Trump or his doctors to tell us the truth about his cognitive
abilities. His campaigns strategic decisions tell us everything: He has
repeatedly demonstrated that hes incapable of executing any plan or
maintaining any discipline. In a normal campaign, for example, a candidate
who had lost the previous presidential debate would leap at the chance for
a rematch closer to the election. But Trump has refused to do so, even when
Fox News offered to host. As Puck reported shortly after the September
debate, within the campaign, there seems to be wide agreement that with
the race this tight, Trump cant afford to lose another news cycle and
therefore, they should prevent him from doing another debate.
'Most dangerous person ever': Trump general reportedly warns he's 'fascist
to the core'
11:34

Its one thing for staffers to fear the candidate would lose a second
debate. Its unprecedented for them to assume hell lose. But thats what
they think of his mental state.

Then there are Trumps travel plans. In a typical campaign, the candidate
would be crisscrossing swing states from now to Election Day. But Trump
who is on pace to hold fewer than a third of the rallies he held in 2016
is visiting states he has no chance of winning, such as Illinois and
California. According to CNN, a source close to Trump said that Trump
has increasingly been fixated on this idea that his supporters in states
not viewed as crucial to the 2024 election deserve to have an opportunity
to see him. Whatever Trumps reason, his team hasnt succeeded in
persuading him to adopt a more electoral-friendly approach.

At his age, theres no point in trying to rein his brain in.

Its also hard to believe that Trumps increasingly violent, racist
rhetoric lines up with the message from his campaign strategists.
Immigration has been central to Trumps pitch to voters since he first ran
for president. But its never been this central, even as Trump loses ground
on voters top issue, the economy. His bigotry saying Latino immigrants
disproportionately have bad genes is more blatant than ever. And his
enthusiasm for authoritarian solutions invoking the Alien Enemies Act,
which was the legal basis for Japanese Americans incarceration during
World War II is less guarded than ever.

Some of Trumps advisers, according to Rolling Stone, oppose this turn.
Theyd prefer hed play it safe. But theyre powerless: His calls for
mass violence are uninhibited because he is uninhibited. And at his age,
theres no point in trying to rein his brain in.
More from MSNBC Daily

No one has forgotten about the paper towels. But Trump keeps reminding us
it could be worse.
Im a Republican strategist. Heres why I'm confident about Kamala Harris
campaign.

Of course, Trumps supporters dont care that his own campaign does not
trust him to be a functional, competent executive. At this late stage, its
quite possible that Trump could emerge victorious in spite of himself.

But his age matters, both for the few truly undecideds left and for what
the electorate should expect from a potential Trump presidency. As chief
executive, Trump worked less than any other president. Should he return to
the White House, its reasonable to assume his age would limit him still
further. That in turn leaves more power for the unelected hangers-on around
him. Trumps first term brought multiple attempted or real subversions of
democracy; his age guarantees a second term will bring even more.

And from there, no one will be going gently anywhere.

When Marcus Deshun Gibson was booked last March on an aggravated rape charge, his situation looked as foreboding as the razor wire topping the Shelby County Jail that held him.

But Gibson had an inside connection – his aunt works for the Memphis Police Department. Soon, he received a stream of intel: MPD payroll specialist Tobie Allen phoned her nephew with details gleaned from the police agency’s confidential investigative files – details she’d received from her friend, decorated sex crimes detective Ouita Knowlton.

Ouita Knowlton The Commercial Appeal

According to an internal investigation report obtained by The Commercial Appeal, Knowlton fed Allen “extremely sensitive information’’ on two occasions, first in 2016 while the investigation was still underway and again on March 10, a day after Gibson’s arrest.

“On March 10, 2017, according to (a computer) audit trail, you accessed and viewed the supplements and printed the offense report several times,’’ reads a statement of charges against Knowlton. “In your statement to the Inspectional Services Bureau, you said that you relayed this information you obtained about the case to (Allen), for the sole purpose of providing details related to the investigation. You also allowed her access to the offense report, with no regard for the victim’s anonymity.’’

'Betrayal,' and no charges in case
Despite the evidence against them, including a recording of Allen’s jail phone conversation with her nephew, both Knowlton, 47, and Allen, 54, will keep their jobs, records indicate. Knowlton has been demoted from lieutenant to sergeant and received a 20-day suspension. Allen was suspended for 20 days.

“I can’t think of a more clear example of betrayal,’’ said Meaghan Ybos, a rape survivor who is suing the city for failing to test more than 12,000 rape kits going back decades. Knowlton headed a special unit whose job was to oversee testing of those kits and re-investigate cold cases to find justice for victims whose cases had been long neglected.

“MPD was in a position to rebuild the trust of rape victims,’’ Ybos said. “I am disturbed at the idea that Ouita would not be charged and Tobie either.’’

Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich’s office also is reviewing the matter to determine if criminal charges should be filed.

"The case is still under investigation,'' spokesman Larry Buser said Friday in an email message.

In a statement released Friday night, the Memphis Police Department expressed disappointment in the actions of Allen and Knowlton, but stood by the disciplinary action taken.

"After a thorough internal investigation, MPD took serious and appropriate disciplinary action against both employees," the release states. "Due to the fact that this case is still under review by the District Attorney General's Office, we are unable to comment further."

Opens door to witness intimidation
David Raybin, a Nashville defense attorney and former prosecutor who is not involved in the case, said he believes Knowlton could be vulnerable to a criminal charge of official misconduct, a felony involving conferring a benefit to a person who isn't entitled to that benefit. Although defendant Gibson likely would have eventually received confidential details through discovery in court, such an early disclosure could jeopardize a case, he said.

"The problem is you could have premature release of this and then witness intimidation,'' Raybin said. There is no indication in any of the records released to the newspaper of intimidation. However, Raybin said victims often are pressured to back down from rape allegations. If the facts are strong enough, a charge of accessory after the fact would have to be considered as well, he said.

In a written statement to her superiors, Knowlton, a 24-year MPD veteran, apologized for her actions.

“Since April 4th (the day she was relieved of duty), I have experienced a myriad of emotions,’’ the detective wrote in a single-page, typed statement. “The most prevalent has been remorse and embarrassment. I am sorry for my actions. I am sorry for not thinking of others, especially the victim in this case. In my work with helping to eliminate untested rape kits in Memphis, I was a part of making decisions that always put the victims first. In fact we took great pains, had many meetings, and a lot of consultation from multiple agencies to create a policy for notifying victims. I believe in the victim centered approach to investigations and my actions were contrary to that belief. Again I am sorry.’’

Knowlton said "my intent was not to aid the suspect in escaping justice.''

'Nothing gonna come out of it'
According to internal reports, the matter began in May 2016 when a woman contacted MPD's Sex Crimes/DNA Unit to report she'd been raped several years earlier. That June, Allen approached Knowlton for information, a statement of charges against her says. Knowlton "informed you of confidential information related to the investigation,'' the document states.

Gibson, 33, was indicted in December and finally arrested March 9 by the Sheriff's fugitive squad. The following day, Allen received access to the confidential offense report.

Gibson posted a $150,000 bond on March 21 and was released. He is awaiting trial. He denies the allegations.

Allen told investigators she was trying to prevent retaliation against her sister's family. "She also claimed that she never revealed any of the confidential information she gathered from reading the report,'' an internal document states.

However, jail telephone tapes tell a different story. "...In the recorded jail phone conversations between Ms. Allen and her nephew she can clearly be heard sharing confidential information with her nephew and at one point even reassured him that 'nothing gonna come out of it' and later 'there's no DNA, no Rape Kit, nothing,''' the report says.

Four officials wrote letters to a supervisor overseeing the investigation vouching for Knowlton's character including MPD Deputy Chief Don Crowe, who said the detective "was always considered trustworthy and dedicated.''
