A drug sale led to the killing of a Burnsville teen in Savage last week, police said Thursday.

Taran Cortez Miller, 44, of Sue Ann Lane in Prior Lake was charged on Thursday with two counts of second-degree murder — one count with intent and one count without intent while committing a felony — in Scott County District Court following the shooting death of Samuel A. Keezer, 16.

His 16-year-old son, Braylen Justice Miller, was charged with two counts of aiding and abetting second-degree murder. His wife, TanyaMarie Esthell Miller, 43, was charged with two counts of aiding an offender; one count relates to being an accomplice after the fact, the other to harboring an offender.

Keezer died from a gunshot wound to the head after being shot in the Target parking lot in Savage around 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28.

The father and son met Keezer to sell him marijuana, according to the charging documents. The father told investigators he shot the victim in the head inside their vehicle when he thought Keezer “was going to take the marijuana and run out of the car without paying."

Police said Keezer arrived at Target in a vehicle with three or four other occupants. A witness in the vehicle with Keezer that night told officers Keezer planned to meet the juvenile suspect and run off with the marijuana.

The witness said Keezer got into the juvenile suspect’s vehicle in the Target parking lot, and the witness’s vehicle drove to a nearby parking lot to wait.

After Keezer didn't return, the witness found him lying on the ground and bleeding, then fled.

Investigators said surveillance video showed Keezer falling out or being pushed out of a vehicle that was then driven away.

Officers were called to Target around 7:30 p.m. that evening. Multiple witnesses reported hearing what sounded like a firecracker before seeing the victim on the ground, Savage Police Chief Rodney Suerer said later.

Officers found the male bleeding heavily with critical head injuries. Keezer was able to say his name and that his head hurt before he began vomiting. He was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was placed on life support and later died.

A Burnsville-Eagan-Savage District spokesperson said Keezer attended Burnsville High School and Burnsville Alternative High School but wasn't enrolled in the district at the time of his death.

On Monday evening, Keezer's family and friends gathered in the Target parking lot for a vigil. "We love Sam" and "Sam's World" were among the messages left a memorial made of flowers, candles and notes.

Family members declined to share further details, citing the ongoing criminal investigation.

An obituary described the teen as "independent, confident, funny, and fearless" and "the most amazing son his parents could have asked for."

"Sam was taken too soon but will live on through all that knew and loved him," the obituary reads. "He is in our hearts and will never be forgotten."

Police connected the suspect vehicle to Braylen Miller. They were waiting to execute a search of the family home and garages when they spotted Braylen Miller running near his house, where they arrested him.

The teen told police he went to St. Paul with his father to buy the marijuana to sell to Keezer.

Keezer initially didn’t show up to their first meeting place, the juvenile said, and suggested Target. The son said his father told him to go inside the house and get a gun.

When Keezer got into the front passenger seat of their vehicle at Target, he kept the door ajar while handling the marijuana. Braylen Miller stated his dad shot Keezer in the head, then pushed him out of the vehicle, police said.

Taran Miller then told his son to drive away and called his wife, Tanya Marie Miller, to tell her what happened.

When they got back home, Tanya Miller went to the neighbor’s house to get her garage key, then the family hid the vehicle in the garage. The juvenile said his mom talked to his sister about taking the firearm.

In a statement to investigators, Taran Miller’s story matched his son’s.

He said he disposed of the bullet casing left in his vehicle and gave the firearm to his sister-in-law at her home in Mankato. His wife drove him.

Officers recovered the murder weapon in a black lock box in the Mankato home.

In a statement to officers, Tanya Miller said she knew her husband sold drugs with their son and that her husband had a gun.

Law enforcement took Taran Miller into custody during a traffic stop shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday at 160th Street and Sue Ann Lane, according the arrest data.

MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - Surveillance cameras enabled police to stitch together the final hours of the grandmother found brutally beaten to death outside a north Minneapolis church in July, ultimately identifying her killer, according to court documents.

Byron Bautista, 38, faces second-degree murder charges, according to court filings.

Bautista was spotted on surveillance video with Felisha Smith, 57, near Chicago Avenue and East Lake Street on July 13, police said. Surveillance cameras then captured the pair exiting a bus about five miles away in north Minneapolis, investigators said. Traffic cameras later recorded Bautista carrying Smith near Spirit of the Lord Church on Penn Avenue North, a block from the bus stop.

"This is traumatizing," said Bianca Harvey, Smith’s daughter. "I really can't believe that he would do that to my mom."

Smith’s daughters said they don’t recognize Bautista and have no idea how their mother connected with him.

Smith suffered a traumatic brain injury after a 2014 shooting, her daughters said. She disappeared after she signed herself out of The Estates at Chateau, a long-term care facility where she lived, they said.

Smith’s daughters said the medical examiner told them that their mother was also sexually assaulted. Court documents don’t mention a sexual assault, but said police found her body partially undressed.

It’s unclear why Smith boarded a bus to north Minneapolis.

If convicted, Bautista faces a 40-year prison sentence. But for Smith’s daughters, that isn’t enough.

"If Minnesota had the death penalty, I wish that he would get that," said Harvey.

Bautista will face a Hennepin County judge Monday afternoon. Smith’s children plan to attend.

Jermaine McMahon has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the Friday morning shooting death of 26-year-old Bloomington resident Justin Williams outside downtown Minneapolis's Ramp A parking lot.

According to the criminal complaint, McMahon, 27, wore a ski mask during the shooting, but was identified by investigators after a security camera captured him buying a light rail ticket while unmasked outside Target Field.

Witnesses told police the gunman, wearing all black except for white shoes, walked up to Williams and shot him five or six times. He then fled the scene riding a racing bike toward the Cedar bike trail.

Other witnesses told police the gunman was seen in the Ramp A area the night before. It appeared he was biking around, looking for someone.

Investigators combed through security footage to see if any cameras in the area captured the suspect. One by a light rail platform at Target Field recorded him buying a train ticket about 3 a.m. -- just over three hours before the shooting.

"The video captures the individual's facial features, clothing details, and bicycle," the complaint says.

Another security cam on the Cedar bike trail showed the same man biking away from the murder scene just a minute after the shooting. Investigators subsequently found a discarded ski mask and pair of black sweatpants on the Cedar trail, with the ticket corresponding to the time the suspect was recorded at the Target Field light rail station.

Downtown officers and security personnel identified the man in the footage as McMahon. He was arrested in a homeless shelter in St. Paul on Saturday.

McMahon's criminal record includes priors for giving police officers false information, attempted theft, driving after his license was suspended, felony theft, and trespassing, among others.

Authorities say DNA evidence collected on the discarded sweatpants and ski mask also links McMahon to the shooting.

Margi Lessman drove to her daughter’s Eagan home Tuesday afternoon to take her to the doctor.

When she went inside the townhome, she saw her daughter — who was eight months pregnant — on her bedroom floor, naked and not breathing. Her neck was cut. A blood-soaked white cloth was stuffed in her mouth.

Senicha Marie Lessman, 25, and her unborn son were dead.

On Thursday, prosecutors charged the baby’s father, Vern Jason Mouelle, 23, of Brooklyn Park, with one count of second-degree murder with intent and one count of second-degree murder of an unborn child.

An autopsy by the Hennepin County medical examiner’s office showed that Lessman died of a severed carotid artery or an obstructed airway. The exact cause of death remains under investigation.

“This was a violent attack that has resulted in the senseless and tragic deaths of a young woman and her unborn child,” Dakota County Attorney Jim Backstrom said in a statement.

According to the charges:

Margi Lessman found her daughter at the townhome at 3141 Alden Pond Lane shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday. She pulled the bloody cloth from her daughter’s mouth, checked her pulse and called 911. Eagan police and paramedics tried to revive Senicha Lessman, but were unsuccessful.

Margi Lessman told officers that her daughter was 32 weeks pregnant and that Mouelle was the baby’s father. She said she last spoke to her daughter over the phone earlier in the day, sometime between 11:30 a.m. and noon.

Officers also spoke to a neighbor, who described a sport-utility vehicle that had been parked in the driveway, sometime between 1:20 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. Motor vehicle records showed that a Mazda Tribute matching the description of the one seen by the neighbor was registered to Mouelle’s mother.

Officers found Mouelle and the vehicle at Mouelle’s work, BioLife Plasma Services in Mounds View, and took him into custody.

Inside the vehicle, officers found a Walmart receipt dated Tuesday for a pocket knife and empty packaging for the knife, as well as Lessman’s cellphone, a bloody trash can and bloody women’s clothing.

A bloody pocket knife was found in a dresser drawer in Mouelle’s bedroom at his parents’ home.

At Mouelle’s first court appearance Thursday, bail was set at $2 million without conditions and $1.5 million with conditions. His next court appearance is set for Feb. 9.

A 25-year-old woman who was eight months pregnant when she was killed Tuesday at her Eagan home was remembered Wednesday by her mother as a “loving, kind, smart and beautiful young woman who was very excited to be a mother.”

Eagan police on Wednesday identified the victim as Senicha Marie Lessman, who along with her 32-week unborn son were killed at a townhouse at 3141 Alden Pond Lane, in a neighborhood east of Minnesota 13 and south of Lone Oak Road. Lessman’s body showed signs of trauma, police said.

Lessman and the suspected killer, 23-year-old Vern Jason Mouelle of Brooklyn Park, were in a relationship, said Eagan police officer Aaron Machtemes, the department spokesman.

Detectives were talking with Lessman’s family to try to determine the extent of her relationship with Mouelle, Machtemes said.

Mouelle remains at Dakota County Jail in Hastings on suspicion of first-degree premeditated murder and first-degree murder of an unborn child. He was booked at the jail early Wednesday.

Mouelle, who has not been formally charged, is scheduled to make a first appearance in Dakota County District Court at noon Thursday, according to the county’s jail log.

On Wednesday, Lessman’s mother, Margi Lessman, released a statement through Eagan police. It read:

“We are devastated at the tragic death of my daughter Senicha and her unborn son. She was a loving, kind, smart and beautiful young woman who was very excited to be a mother. She was loved greatly by all of her family, friends and co-workers. We will miss her more than words can say. We are asking for privacy while our family grieves during this difficult time.”

Other than 2012 and 2013 convictions for speeding, Mouelle has no criminal record in Minnesota, records show. Machtemes said Eagan police had never been called to the Alden Pond Lane address before and had no previous contact with Mouelle.

Mounds View police arrested Mouelle shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday, about three hours after Eagan officers were called to Lessman’s townhouse and found her unresponsive. Eagan Fire and HealthEast paramedics administered first aid to the Lessman, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Hennepin County medical examiner’s office will conduct autopsies to determine a cause of death for Lessman and the fetus. The statement from Eagan police said that without the medical examiner’s determination, “we cannot confirm the fetus’ father at this time.”

According to her Facebook page, Lessman was from Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria. She attended Burnsville High School, and worked at a Panda Express restaurant and an Old Navy clothing store.

In a Jan. 22 Facebook post, Lessman thanked her co-workers at Old Navy for throwing her a surprise baby shower. The post shows a photo of diapers, baby clothes and other gifts she was given.

“When I Become a Stay at home Mom I’m Gonna Miss Working With Them,” she wrote.

Mouelle works for BioLife Plasma Services in Mounds View but has been placed on a leave of absence, a company spokeswoman said Wednesday.

FOLEY — An Eagan woman has been found guilty of murder for killing a St. Cloud market owner in 2015.

Cheryl Oby Albert, 26, was found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder for killing Keletigui Keita, 37, of St. Cloud, according to her lawyers.

Albert is scheduled to be sentenced April 10, according to court records.

Keita was the co-owner of the African grocery store Kilimandjaro Market in St. Cloud.

One count of third-degree murder was dismissed, according to Benton County prosecutor Karl Schmidt.

The verdict came around 6:40 p.m., according to Christopher Obasi and Samuel A. McIntosh, Sr., Albert's lawyers. The jury deliberated for about an hour, Obasi said.

Schmidt said he was happy with the verdict, and he gave credit to all law enforcement agencies involved for doing a great job.

"It took a lot of work" over the span of two years, Schmidt said, to tie up loose ends and find the truth.

According to court records, police found Keita unresponsive in his apartment on June 9, 2015. Albert was extradited from California in July 2017.

Law enforcement officers, the person who found Keita's body and the medical examiner were among those who testified in the more than two-week jury trial. During several days of the trial, the courtroom galley was nearly empty.

Officers also explained in court their hunt for Keita's cell phone, which electronically traced to Foley but was never recovered. Officers did find broken pieces of a watch box along Minnesota Highway 23.

Several watches were recovered with items belonging to Albert, according to testimony, in a truck in Minneapolis. The day before the trial ended, Schmidt showed the court a taped interview Louisville Metro Police officers conducted with Albert in July 2015.

In the interview, Albert admitted to being at Keita's apartment the night he died, but told detectives he was alive when she left.

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — A Prichard man pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of second-degree rape, according to court documents.

Mobile County Circuit Court documents show Dammon Raphael Jones, 35, pleaded guilty to the raping of a child less than 16 years of age and more than 12 years of age.

“Defendant waived trial by jury, withdrew plea of not guilty and entered a plea of guilty to the charge of Count 2 Rape 2nd Degree – Child less than sixteen years of age and more than twelve years of age,” the court document said.

Jones was also facing a charge of first-degree rape, which will no longer be prosecuted following the guilty plea, documents said.

Jones will serve five years in a jail-like facility, followed by five years of formal probation, News 5 has learned.
