Two more people — brothers from Minneapolis — have been charged in connection to the triple homicide last month in Coon Rapids.

31-year-old Demetrius Trenton Shumpert and 19-year-old Omari Malik Shumpert are each charged with three counts of second-degree murder.

Their charges come two weeks after prosecutors charged 37-year-old Alonzo Pierre Mingo with the same offenses. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 3.

The charges stem from the deaths of 42-year-old Shannon Patricia Jungwirth, her husband, 39-year-old Mario Alberto Trejo Estrada, and her son, 20-year-old Jorge Alexander Reyes-Jungwirth, whose bodies were found in a home on Jan. 26. Two kids were also in the home but weren’t physically hurt.

Court documents state that Mingo posed as a UPS driver when he entered the home with two other people.

On Feb. 2, investigators gained access to video from one of the surveillance cameras inside the home, newly filed court documents state. That video showed Demetrius and Omari Shumpert holding the victims and pistol-whipping one of the men before one of the brothers shoots him. Mingo is accused of killing the other two victims.

Criminal complaints state that investigators tested loose rounds of ammunition found in the home and DNA linked them to Omari Shumpert. Cellphone data records also placed Omari, Demetrius and Mingo at Demetrius’ home the morning the victims were found.

Police arrested the brothers on Tuesday.

Omari claimed his phone was stolen by a homeless person a couple of months ago and he hadn’t been to Coon Rapids in over a year. He added that his brother, Demetrius, is too old for him to hang out with and they aren’t close, and said he’d never seen Mingo, complaints state.

Demetrius said he didn’t go to work the day the victims were found because he was taking care of his baby and said he hadn’t seen his brother or Mingo recently.

While the complaints don’t note much of a motive, other court documents state that Estrada had been under investigation for suspected drug sales dating back to October.

The Shumpert brothers are each scheduled to make their first court appearances on Thursday morning. Each murder charge carries up to 40 years in prison.

A Coon Rapids man is now charged with murder for a fatal stabbing earlier this week that resulted in the death of his mother’s boyfriend.

Prosecutors formally charged 25-year-old Romelle Flowers on Friday with second-degree murder.

Charging documents state that Flowers’ mother called 911 just before 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday and reported that her son had cut her boyfriend. When authorities arrived at the home along Jay Street Northwest, the victim was unconscious, covered in blood and suffering from several apparent stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The caller told officers that her boyfriend and Flowers had been arguing all day and turned physical at one point, with the two swinging at each other and the boyfriend punching Flowers in the face. However, they were separated and the woman said she and her boyfriend went to bed at around 2:30 a.m.

Then, about an hour later, she woke up to the two fighting again and saw her boyfriend bleeding profusely, court documents state. Flowers ran off but was later found a short distance away and arrested.

Flowers told investigators he believed the victim was mad at him for throwing a lighter away too hard, making a loud noise, but said the victim had attacked him twice earlier in the day and he fought back.

Flowers faces up to 40 years in prison and made his first court appearance on Friday.

Police say one person is dead and a person of interest is in custody after a shooting Monday morning in St. Cloud.

St. Cloud Police were called to the 400 block of Lincoln Avenue Northeast just before 7 a.m.

In an update Monday afternoon, the department said the victim, a 28-year-old woman, died at the scene. Her name is being withheld pending an autopsy by the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.

Officers took a person of interest, identified as 36-year-old Michael Jordan Carpenter of St. Cloud, into custody. He’s being held pending criminal charges.

The investigation remains active.

The department added that officers don’t believe there is any threat to the public.

Law enforcement officials have a man in custody after three people were found dead at a home in Coon Rapids.

Tierney Peters, with the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office, said dispatchers received an open-line call at around 12:26 p.m. Friday.

While nobody talked to dispatchers, they heard “sounds of a disturbance” and sent several agencies to the home near Springbrook Drive and 94th Avenue Northwest.

When officers arrived, they found three people — two males and a female — already dead.

Two juveniles in the home were uninjured, officials say.

Peters says information is still limited since the investigation just started but no arrests have been made at this time and the sheriff’s office hasn’t issued any public alerts for a suspect. The victims’ relationship and cause of death is also still under investigation.

Audio from Broadcastify, a live broadcasting service, captured officials talking about hearing the sound of yelling and screaming. Additional audio said, “I have a man down on the ground, I’ve got blood… We have gun casings on the ground… We have multiple people down and we do not have a weapon on scene yet.”

“[It’s] shocking, shocking … it’s not something you hear every day,” Shamsadin Dahir, who lives in the neighborhood, said.

“I cannot believe it. I’ve been here about 50 years living. It’s hard for me to believe, it’s a serious shock, actually,” said another neighbor named Wanda. “I saw police cars, then I saw a man running down the road with a big rifle. Thought ‘Oh God, what is happening now?’ So, it is scary.”

Dahir said he was driving out of the neighborhood when law enforcement was first responding to the home.

“I just saw cops, guns drawn, [and they were] ready to go inside the house,” he adds.

Now, Dahir says he’ll be thinking about the families involved.

“That’s very tragic, very tragic. Once you hear three bodies, that’s very sad… Prayers go out to their families and those two kids who were found inside alive, luckily, they came out alive,” Dahir said. “I hope [investigators] find who did this and [it] comes to an end because it’s a very quiet neighborhood.”

Law enforcement is hoping for the same.

“[We] have many, many detectives on the case looking into all aspects,” Peters said, adding: “We’re going to continue doing that in order to, you know, provide the truth of the situation to these deceased people’s loved ones.”

No other information has been released at this time.

The Minnesota Freedom Fund (MFF), a charity promoted by Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris, helped free a 37-year-old man accused of raping an 8-year-old girl from jail.

The fund also bailed out a man who allegedly broke into the home of a 71-year-old woman and tortured her, and a man accused of curb stomping and robbing another man who walked with a cane the same day that George Floyd died. Records of the fund assisting these individuals and others were obtained by Alpha News in collaboration with the Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF).

Harris first promoted the fund on June 1 when she asked her supporters to give the MFF their money on Twitter. The link she included in her Twitter post still leads to a page featuring her branding that allows individuals to give money to the fund, as of September 10.

Harris promoted the fund to, in her own words, “help post bail for those protesting on the ground in Minnesota” during the George Floyd riots. When officers responded to the home of a 71-year-old woman who called in regarding a domestic assault, they “observed a pool of blood” and found her nursing “a swollen eye that was competently red/bloodshot” with “bruises on her chest, shoulders, back and legs,” per a statement of probable cause on file with the Hennepin County District Court.

The aged lady told officers that it was her son, 54-year-old Richard Raynell Kelley, who broke into her home, grabbed her, beat her, bound her with duct tape and left her “laying on the floor at the foot of the stairs where officers later found a pool of blood.”

“Defendant [Kelley] proceeded to run up and down the stairs multiple times, stepping on Victim each time he passed her,” according to the statement of probable cause.

Kelley also told his elderly mother “he was going to kill her,” and kept her bound for a period of time while he napped and made food in her home.

The statement of probable cause also notes that by invading his mother’s home, he violated a no-contact order. The statement adds that authorities are concerned Kelley may do further harm to his mother if freed from custody.

The MFF freed him for between $4,000 and $50,000, depending on the terms of his bail, per a court document that indicates his set bail amounts.

Kelley later went on to violate a court order requiring him to remain in his home, according to another court document.

Kelley is currently at large, and his whereabouts are unknown, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, the DCNF discovered.

Like Columbus, the fact that Kelley filed for his bail to be returned to the Freedom Fund indicates that the MFF paid his way out of police custody.

Deshaun Jermaine Boyd
Surveillance video shows Deshaun Jermaine Boyd knocking a man with a cane to the ground, and then stomping on his head before robbing him, according a statement of probable cause on file with the Hennepin County courts.

Boyd allegedly caused “significant injuries” to his victim’s “face and head.” When police found the victim, he “had difficulty talking and seemed to not understand where he was,” per the statement.

Just one day after he was arrested, Boyd filed to have his bail money returned to the MFF, again indicating that the fund secured his release.

The three individuals listed in this article are just some of the many individuals bailed out by the Minnesota Freedom Fund and identified by Alpha News and the DCNF. Both outlets will continue to publish more stories about these individuals.

Investigators in Chattanooga, Tennessee, allege that a 27-year-old shot her younger sister in the back of the head and left her dead on a couch at home before the suspect took a Lyft to a Publix supermarket, called 911, and tried to pin the crime on another woman.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office investigation began after lunch on Thursday when a woman called 911 from Publix and purported to confess committing to a murder at a home located on a cul-de-sac at the end of Thrush Hollow Lane. That caller allegedly tried to pass herself off as the pregnant girlfriend of Moore’s husband, local NBC affiliate WRCB reported.

That apparently didn’t work, as the suspect named by authorities as Brittni Moore (Harmon) but listed in jail and court records under the name Brittani Nicole Harmon, is now charged with murder.

After the 911 call, the victim, identified in some places as 25-year-old Brianna Harmon and in others as Breanna, was found fatally shot on a couch at home. The defendant reportedly claimed she was asleep on the couch with the victim before seeing her sister get up to use her phone that morning. In other words, the suspect allegedly claimed that before she went to Publix her sister she was still alive at home.

At the start, the sheriff’s office only said it was “conducting a death investigation” and that there was “no” broader “threat to the community, since a suspect was already detained.

In an update, deputies identified their suspect and called the shooting an “isolated incident.”

WRCB shed more light on how authorities came to conclusions about the identity of the shooter and the nature of the crime.

Moore was allegedly caught on a neighbor’s Ring camera at the crime scene when the shooting unfolded and caught on Publix surveillance video. While Moore allegedly claimed to be her husband’s pregnant girlfriend and claimed to be calling from a Fast Access Healthcare clinic, the Publix video combined with GPS evidence tracing the call to the store undermined that story, the report said.

Hamilton County General Sessions Court records reviewed by Law&Crime show that Moore is expected in court at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 21.

Court records also show that Moore has faced several other cases, from 2017, 2018, 2020, 2022, and at the start of 2024 — whether for theft, aggravated arson, improper use of 911 or making false reports.

Now she faces her most serious allegation of all: first-degree murder, a crime punishable upon conviction in Tennessee by death or life in prison with or without parole. It’s not immediately clear if the accused has a defense lawyer.

A felon previously identified as a Native Mob gang member has been charged in a murder and shooting spree last month in south Minneapolis that left two people dead and two others injured.

Joshua Anthony Jones, 36, of Bemidji, Minn., has been charged in three separate cases with two counts of second-degree murder, three counts of attempted second-degree murder, and three counts of illegal firearms possession for the shootings that occurred throughout the day on Sept. 18 near area homeless encampments.

The spree began before 5 a.m. that day when two people were shot at or near a homeless encampment on the 2500 block of 17th Avenue South. One person died in the shooting, and the other was injured after both were reportedly shot in their heads. The suspect was apparently recognized by one of the injured parties or a witness as a Native Mob gang member who was named as Jones at the time, according to police scanner audio.

Another shooting occurred the same day about 12 hours later at 4:20 p.m., when another person was shot and killed on the 2500 block of Bloomington Avenue South, also near an encampment.

Just about an hour later, around 5:19 p.m., another person was shot near East Phillips Park, and the suspect was again described as a Native Mob gang member in a red Jeep Cherokee, according to police scanner audio at the time. Further dispatches indicated that the suspect may have been taken into custody in the area, but police were having difficulty identifying him.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office (HCAO) initially announced charges against Jones in the two latter cases on one count of second-degree murder and one count of attempted second-degree murder, and indicated that Jones was still being investigated for the early morning homicide.

This week, the HCAO announced further charges against Jones in the first shooting and homicide that include one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder. The charges state that in addition to shooting two people that morning, one of whom died, Jones also fired shots at a third person who was not injured by the gunfire.

Jones is also charged in each of the three cases with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Minnesota court documents in prior cases against Jones identify him as a Native Mob gang member, and in 2018, Jones attacked a corrections officer at Oak Park Heights, seriously injuring him.

Jones also has another pending case on a charge of second-degree assault for a shooting in March of this year near Lake Street and Hiawatha Avenue, as well as two cases involving felony auto theft, and felony fleeing in one case.

Jones remains in custody in Hennepin County Jail on a bail amount of $1.5 million and is scheduled to make his next court appearance in the cases on Oct. 24.

Kamala Harris helped a controversial bail fund rake in millions of dollars, which it spent on getting violent criminals back on the streets in the name of “social justice” — only for some of them to commit more crimes, including murder.

Among the freed criminals: a twice-convicted male sex offender who went on to allegedly assault other women before his rearrest, and a man who left a victim with a traumatic brain injury after being sprung from jail while awaiting trial for another felony assault.

Following the May 25, 2020, death of George Floyd in Minneapolis at the hands of police, which sparked riots across the country, the Minnesota Freedom Fund received endorsements and donations from celebrities including Seth Rogan, Justin Timberlake and Cynthia Nixon.

Harris, then a California senator, also asked her supporters to donate in a June 2020 tweet.

“If you’re able to, chip in now to the @MNFreedomFund to help post bail for those protesting on the ground in Minnesota,” Harris wrote.

The fund, started in 2016, raked in $41,655,560, according to its 2020 tax filings — a huge windfall compared to previous years when it took in between $100,000 and $230,000 in annual donations, according to public records.

The injection of capital allowed the group to go from spending $1,000 a day on bail to more than $100,000 to spring offenders, according to a report.

Crime watchdogs point out how big bail funds can undermine the system itself, and say Harris — herself a former prosecutor and district attorney in California — should know better.

Hannah E. Meyers, an expert on policing at the Manhattan Institute, told The Post: “The value of the bail system is that it provides leverage, ensuring that someone charged with hurting the community doesn’t do it again before trial.

“For most people, the idea of losing their own money or the savings of their loved ones is a huge motivator for not reoffending. Bail funds scramble this dynamic, since — humans being what they are — nobody cares as much about losing strangers’ money.”

Meyers also noted bail is set at judges’ discretion, and should be made economically appropriate to the person in front of them. She also pointed out how those who have previously been convicted are much more likely to reoffend.

“Advocates for extreme bail reform often try to obscure these very different levels of risk between releasing serious, repeat offenders and low-level or first-time offenders.”

Since 2016, MFF has paid $21.2 million in cash bail and $4.8 million for immigration bonds, freeing 2,537 people from pre-trial detention and 463 from immigration detention, according to statistics on its website.

A crime watchdog group in Minneapolis that monitors the fund’s bail initiatives and crime in the city called Harris’ actions endorsing the group “irresponsible.”

“It was ridiculous for Kamala Harris or any government official to promote an organization like Minnesota Freedom Fund, considering she didn’t make the tweet until June 1, well after it was clearly obvious that our city was being burned and looted by protesters,” said the director of the group, who did not want to be identified because of safety concerns.

“The fact that Harris’ tweet still has not been deleted, nor has she denounced how irresponsible MFF has been in bailing out dangerous offenders, even after all the controversy and proof of harm that MFF has caused to Minnesota, is proof she cares more about criminals than law-abiding citizens.”

When asked about the filings and the criticism leveled against their initiatives in bailing out sometimes violent criminals, the group told The Post Tuesday it is “a local nonprofit led by a volunteer-based board.

“We received an unprecedented level of support following the murder of George Floyd, and we have used that support to advance our mission during the years since,” said Noble Frank, the group’s communications director.

Despite the huge influx of cash, MFF listed a loss of $6.7 million on its 2022 federal filings, the latest available.

Here are cases in which bailing offenders out has resulted in disaster for public safety:

Christopher Boswell
The Minnesota Freedom Fund paid $350,000 in cash for the release of Christopher Don Boswell in 2020, according to the local site Alphanews.com.

By that time, he had already served almost 16 years in prison after being convicted of two rapes.

When he was bailed out, Boswell was facing 10 felony counts including attempted rape, sexual assault and kidnapping against two women, according to local news reports.

A watchdog who tracked those cases confirmed to The Post that those charges were subsequently dropped or dismissed, but Boswell’s pattern of behavior continued.

By 2022, Boswell was alleged to be dealing meth and accused of beating up his then-girlfriend. He is also said to have forced her into having oral sex with another man while he raped her, according to the charges filed against him by the state.

The charges also describe one occasion Boswell was driving to a liquor store and allegedly forced the girlfriend out of the car and to her knees while he fired off a gun to scare her.

He then told the woman to get back into the car, where he fired another round out the window and said, “I could have killed you twice now,” according to the court papers.

Boswell, now 41, was convicted of criminal sexual assault in the first degree, promoting prostitution, stalking and assault with a dangerous weapon last year over the 2022 incidents.

He is scheduled to be released in 2042, according to court records.

George Howard
In the summer of 2021, the freedom fund bailed out George Howard while he was awaiting trial on a misdemeanor domestic assault charge.

Less than a month later, Howard was arrested on a murder charge, accused of shooting another man — Luis Martinez Ortiz — in a road-rage incident along a local highway in Minneapolis.

Several hours after Crime Watch Minneapolis posted a tweet condemning MFF for having bailed Howard out on the domestic assault charge — he was ultimately convicted of misdemeanor disorderly conduct in that case — the nonprofit seemed to have second thoughts.

“MFF believes that every individual who has been arrested by the law enforcement is innocent until proven guilty, and if a judge deems them eligible for bail, they should not have to wait in jail simply because they don’t have the same income or access to resources as others,” it said, later deleting the tweet and issuing a new statement.

“The killing of Luis Martinez Ortiz is an undeniable loss and tragedy for the entire community,” the new tweet said.

“We have heard from you and we have revised this statement because our previous statement did not acknowledge this deep loss and for that we apologize.”

Howard, who also goes by the name Ricco Lamont Passmore, 50, pleaded guilty last year. He is scheduled to be released in 2031.

Lionel Timms
Lionel Melaki Timms, now 36, was bailed out by MFF for $10,000 in cash bail after being charged with committing a felony third-degree assault, causing substantial bodily harm, aboard a bus in Bloomington in July 2020.

Timms was said to have been panhandling and repeatedly hit a passenger who refused to give him money, leaving him with a fractured nose, swollen eye and multiple abrasions and needing hospital treatment, according to court documents in the case.

A month later, Timms was arrested again on a new set of assault charges after allegedly leaving a victim with a traumatic brain injury, a fractured skull and a brain bleed after kicking them in an alley, according to reports.

The MFF commented on news of the second assault, saying it was “deeply saddened” by the assault on a “popular and well-respected member of our community.”

It also tried to blame local authorities: “We paid his bail after working to first ensure that Mr. Timms would be provided with housing and other necessary support … Delays in the government’s processing of his release prevented him from receiving that assistance, setting the stage for the subsequent tragedy.”

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office brought another felony count of third-degree assault against him over the incident.

Both cases were combined and Timms was found guilty of felony assault in 2021 and sentenced to five years in prison, court records show.
