Detectives who investigated the kidnap and double rape of a young gay woman at a property in Plymouth have said the perpetrator had been "prowling the streets looking for a victim" to what was "a truly horrendous and disturbing crime".

The jury at Plymouth Crown Court took around two hours of deliberation before finding 28-year-old Yuseab Woldeab guilty by a unanimous verdict of kidnaping the young woman - who cannot be named for legal reasons - before he then vaginally and anally raped her at his multi-occupancy home in Wilton Street, Millbridge.

During the trial the court heard how the woman, who is in her 20s, had been in a same-sex relationship for around a year, had known she was gay from a young age and had never been to bed or slept with a man in her entire life. However, Woldeab had tried to convince police that he had been approached by the woman as he drove up to her in Union Street in the early hours of the morning last April. He claimed she had called out to him, asked him his age, told him her age, asked him his plans for the night, said she wanted to go back to his place and that he was her "type" - all in just a few seconds before she got into his three door white Ford Fiesta car.

However, during police interviews - where she frequently broke down sobbing - and during cross-examination in court, the woman stuck to her version of events. She said she had gone out with two friends, had had drinks at a number of venues including the Dog and Duck pub, Revolutions and Popworld before heading to a pizza shop on Union Street in the early hours.

She admitted she was so intoxicated, the following morning she was convinced she had one of her drinks "spiked". However, despite much of the latter part of her night being hazy, she recalled the driver of the small white car called out "taxi" to her and that when she got into the front seat she thought the vehicle was much smaller than most taxis she had been in.

CCTV footage played in court showed the woman was at the passenger window of his car - parked on the pelican crossing in front of the Palace Theatre - for just six seconds before she got into the vehicle and Woldeab drove off so quickly that the passenger door was still open. The jury had also seen CCTV footage of Woldeab at the Revolution venue the same time the woman was at the club - although they did not interact or speak to each other - before he headed to Claremont Street on foot to collect his car before driving it into the city centre, along Union Street to Colin Campbell Court car park where he briefly stopped before heading back down Union Street and into Octagon Street.

Woldeab claimed he had wanted to get cigarettes at a convenience store on Union Street but it was closed, but CCTV footage noted that having already passed it once, he then returned and braked beside it, just as the woman was walking along at the same location.

Woldeab was then seen to park in Octagon Street for a few seconds - just as the woman crossed the road over Octagon roundabout and continued up Union Street, before he then turned around and followed her at slow speed, stopping right next to her.

Once he got her back to Wilton Street he ushered her inside and within minutes had taken down her clothing and raped her. He told police the sex act was consensual. He also insisted that he had not had anal sex with her.

The woman told police she recalled suffering great pain and said "all I remember is pain". She told the officer she remembered "feeling a bit paralysed", but. when Woldeab went to the toilet she fled the building.

The jury heard from a series of professional and expert witnesses, including a senior forensic scientist who confirmed that following an intimate examination at the Plymouth Sexual Assault Referral Centre, DNA and sperm linked directly to Woldeab was found inside the woman.

Woldeab, who court heard was an refugee from Eritrea who had been in the country for several years, was assisted through the court hearings by a interpreter speaking Tigrinya - a language spoken in Eritrea and Ethiopia. The 28-year-old stood impassive when the foreman of the jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts to the two counts of rape and count of kidnap. A cry of "yes" went up from the public gallery where a number of the woman's supporters had sat during the trial - as had Woldeab's supporters.

Despite Woldeab being described in court as a man of good character, having never been arrested, charged, cautioned or even warned, Judge Peter Johnson said a pre-sentence report was necessary as the "issue of dangerousness had to be assessed", adding that this would be done "to see if you [Woldeab] pose a significant risk of serious harm" to the public.

Judge Johnson went on to suggest that there would be a sentencing hearing in the next three weeks, but certainly before the end of the month. He commended the investigators and praised the "dignified way" those in the public gallery had behaved.

Senior Investigating Officer Det Sgt Chris Kinski, of Plymouth police's Sexual Offences Investigation Team said following the guilty verdict: "This was a truly horrendous and disturbing crime.

"Woldeab could see that the victim was vulnerable as she was heavily intoxicated. He used this entirely to his advantage when approaching her that night. We believe he had been prowling the streets looking for a victim prior to spotting her.

"He told the victim he was a taxi driver whilst she was on her own, luring her into his vehicle with the intention of committing sexual offences against the victim. He has taken the vulnerable victim back to his address and raped her. At the first chance she escaped and reported this to the police.

"I wish to thank the victim for her incredible bravery in coming forward and reporting this to us. We know that this was no easy task and that she was fearful of not being believed, however, we take all reports of this nature extremely seriously and are wholeheartedly committed to supporting survivors of sexual abuse.

"I have no doubt that what happened that night will stay with the victim forever. I hope this sentencing can provide her with some sense of closure so that she can move on with the same courage and determination that she has shown throughout this process.

"We would urge anyone suffering in silence to come forward. As this case shows, you will be believed and supported and together we will hold offenders to account for their crimes."

Pedro Moreno was HPD's "go-to guy" in the sex-crimes division for investigating serial rapists. His fellow officers called him "Father Pete" because of the confessions he'd coaxed over the years from sexual assault suspects.

A report on Moreno's desk in the summer of 2007 said the attacker had brandished a knife during a rape. It was particularly violent.

He felt certain this rapist had attacked other women.

Moreno had been a Houston police officer for more than two decades. After working his first case, he was struck by how traumatizing sexual assault was for women. He felt deeply for them and knew then it was his calling.

During his career, he would file charges against more than 30 repeat offenders, he said, and almost all of them had been convicted. He was used to putting them away.

Moreno was driven by a responsibility to victims, to bringing their attackers to justice. Every one, no matter her circumstances, deserved nothing less, he felt.

He poured over, reports of rapes and assaults, sexual and physical.

He separated them into stacks, made notes in the margins, found the parallels.

The victims were homeless women. The rapes all took place within about a two-mile radius of the distinctive 1939 Sears store and Fiesta Mart, lit in yellow and red neon, at Wheeler near the Pierce elevated bridge.

In many instances, the assailant was friendly at first, usually offering the women drugs, persuading them to go with him. Then he took them to vacant homes, behind bridges or other areas shielded from view.

He often brandished a knife or a box cutter. He held his victims down, choking them during the rape. And there was this: Some of them could identify the assailant by his street name.
They called him "Slim" or "Chicago Slim."

SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE - A Cook County Jail inmate awaiting trial for rape and kidnapping has been charged with sexually assaulting a cellmate, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.

Gerrod Greer, of Gary, Ind., attacked the man while the pair were in custody together in late April, Assistant State’s Attorney Liam Reardon told Judge Laura Sullivan on Tuesday.

The victim, 27, had been rejecting advances Greer had been making to him when they were in their cell alone.

But later that evening, Greer, 27, woke the then-sleeping man up and asked that he perform a sex act on him, Reardon said.

The victim, who had been sleeping on the lower bunk, eventually complied because Greer threatened to beat him if he refused, Reardon said.

Greer allegedly continued to rape the man.

The next morning, when the men were allowed to leave their cell, the victim told a sheriff’s deputy what had happened.

Both men were then sent to Cermak Health Services, where a rape kit was taken, Reardon said.

Test results showed Greer’s DNA matched DNA found on the victim, Reardon said.

Sullivan ordered Greer held in lieu of $500,000 bail for criminal sexual assault.

Greer was already in jail for a rape and kidnapping case that is pending at the Markham Courthouse.

In that incident, he was charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated criminal sexual abuse, aggravated battery and unlawful restraint, according to court records.

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - An accused serial rapist was indicted Thursday by an Orleans Parish Grand Jury.

District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro’s office secured the indictment of accused serial rapist Daniel Meridy who linked by DNA results to the sexual assaults of at least eight women in two states.

Meridy was charged with five counts of aggravated/first-degree rape and five counts of aggravated kidnapping in the 10-count indictment. Each of the 10 counts is punishable by a mandatory lifetime prison sentence.

Meridy’s bond from $2 million to $7.5 million after the indictment was read.

Meridy, 35, has been linked by DNA results to the five New Orleans rapes for which he is charged that occurred between June 2015-October 2018 in Treme and Central City.

His DNA profile also has matched evidence recovered from the rapes of three other women in Kansas City, Mo., which occurred in 2004-05. Meridy has told authorities he lived in Kansas City between 2002-15, before returning to his native New Orleans.

The New Orleans cases involve five women who were abducted at gunpoint or knifepoint, then taken to secluded locations or abandoned properties where they were raped. The incidents occurred:

· In the 1800 block of Bayou Road, around 9 p.m. on June 7, 2015;

· In the 600 block of South Genois Street, around 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 26, 2016;

· Near the corner of Washington Avenue and Clara Street, around 9 p.m. on Sept. 21, 2016;

· In the 2200 block of Fourth Street, around 11:45 p.m. on June 10, 2018;

· In the 2400 block of South Johnson Street, around 2 p.m. on Oct. 13, 2018.

NOPD sex crimes detective Kevin Richardson, tasked to DNA-related cold cases under the department's SAKI grant (Sexual Assault Kit Initiative), took up the investigation last September after being notified that the same unknown DNA profile had been found in the first four unsolved New Orleans cases.

In one of those attacks, a victim had reported a license plate that Richardson eventually traced to Meridy. The detective obtained a search warrant for a buccal swab of Meridy’s cheek last Dec. 6, and the resulting DNA profile matched all five New Orleans cases. Meridy has remained in custody since his arrest on Dec. 10.

Once Meridy’s DNA profile was uploaded into the federal database, the match to three similar unsolved Kansas City cases also came to light.

Meridy has not yet been charged by Kansas City authorities.

ALBION, Ill. - A southern Illinois judge was fatally shot outside his Albion home, and his wife is now charged with first-degree murder, according to Illinois State Police.

Megan Valentine, 44, was arrested Nov. 7 after her husband, Illinois Second Judicial Circuit Court Judge Michael Valentine, was fatally shot, police said.

She's charged with first-degree murder, a Class M felony, aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony, aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class 2 felony and aggravated domestic battery, a Class 2 felony, state police said.

The shooting occurred at 12:14 p.m. on Nov. 5 at the couple’s home in the 110 block of County Road 600.

When officers arrived, they found Michael's body lying outside the home, police said. Megan was arrested at the scene, authorities said.

The charges against her were filed Nov. 7 by the Illinois State's Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor's Office.

Megan is currently being held at the White County Jail.

A 26-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly admitted to raping a 3-year-old girl, resulting in her contraction of chlamydia and gonorrhea, according to court records.

Drevon Alexander Perkins now faces a charge of super aggravated sexual assault of a child. He was booked into the Bexar County Jail on a $100,000 bail.

According to court records, the victim's mother noticed discharge in her diaper and took her to a local hospital for treatment. The doctor confirmed she was infected with the STDs, and police began investigating.

During a polygraph test, Perkins allegedly admitted to raping the girl in January while he was doing drugs. He said he assaulted the girl at his apartment while her mother was at work.

The affidavit also notes Perkins has the same STDs that the girl was found to have contracted.

Detectives are searching for additional victims of Malachi Thomas.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Detectives from the Fairfax County Police Department's Major Crimes Bureau arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the sexual assault of a juvenile on Friday.

In July, an underage victim reported to police that they were assaulted by a man they met online. The man used a false identity on a social media platform to lure the victim into sending him photos, then forced the victim to meet with him and subsequently assaulted the victim, according to police.

Following a thorough investigation, detectives identified a second underage victim and were able to identify and charge the suspect, 18-year-old Malachi Thomas, of Woodbridge, with one count of rape, and three counts of sodomy.

Thomas is currently being held without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

Police said that during the investigation detectives learned that the Prince William County Police Department was also investigating Thomas for similar crimes.

Detectives believe there may be more victims who were contacted by Thomas and are asking anyone who believes that they, or their children, may have been contacted by Thomas to call police. Thomas used variations of the account names, “carlaaa33cx,” “King Stannis,” “Renly,” “the Golden Company,” “Lord Ceaser,” “Grand Kublai Khan” and “victorialuvss," police said.

GARY, Ind. — A Gary man allegedly kidnapped and raped a 16-year-old girl who was visiting Michael Jackson’s boyhood home with her father.

Oasia Barnes is facing 17 charges, including rape, kidnapping, criminal confinement and more following the alleged series of incidents Friday.

According to court documents, a 16-year-old girl was visiting Michael Jackson’s childhood home, located in the 2300 block of Jackson Street, with her father when a man, later identified as Oasia Barnes, allegedly approached and put a gun into the girl’s ribs.

Authorities allege Barnes demanded money and the father gave him around $300 in cash.

He then forced the father to drive his vehicle with his daughter and Barnes in the backseat. Barnes allegedly told the father he was going to “blow (the girl’s) brains out” if he didn’t comply.

The father told police he repeatedly told Barnes to stop and he allegedly threatened to shoot both of them if they didn’t comply.

The father was directed to drive into an alley at the rear of an abandoned house. He later told police after Barnes and the girl got out of the vehicle, he considered trying to run him over — but was worried he would also strike his daughter.

The teen told police Barnes allegedly forced her to perform oral sex at gunpoint in the abandoned house before grabbing her by the arm to move locations.

Court documents state Barnes told her she would be his girlfriend and instructed her to tell him she loved him. Barnes allegedly didn’t believe her and threatened to shoot her toes off “one-by-one until it sounded like she meant it.”

The girl told police that she was forced to walk around a nearby neighborhood and Barnes was telling people she was his new girlfriend.

She was then taken to a home on Washington Street after seeing a helicopter. They remained in a basement stairwell until police located them, according to documents.

A handgun was located on Barnes at the time of his arrest.

Barnes is being held without bail until Aug. 27 and then a $220,000 bond will be applied, according to records.

Additionally there is little to no demand for it in the county so why
should they be spending tax dollars on something people aren't using?
