How prescient of them to begin prosecution before Don Fatso's
threats. The timing suggests Don Fatso is retaliating for getting
caught violating Panama's laws.

Demarcus Ramone James

A defendant who flung a cup full of water across a Portland courtroom and into the face of a prosecutor last year was sentenced to 60 days in jail Thursday.

That’s on top of a 25-year prison sentence that 43-year-old Demarcus Ramone James received earlier this year for raping a 12-year-old girl after her mother had given her permission to stop by James’ apartment to watch a movie.

James threw the water after Multnomah County Circuit Judge Leslie Bottomly found him guilty of the sex crimes at the conclusion of a four-day trial in December. According to a probable cause affidavit, the judge had just asked Deputy District Attorney Amanda Nadell what prison sentence she recommended for James.

James later told investigators he was so angry that he grabbed the cup of water in front of him and threw it at Nadell’s head.

A courtroom surveillance camera caught the act on video. It shows James sitting about 8 feet from the prosecutor and suddenly launching the cup at Nadell. Nadell flinched, paused, then walked up to the witness stand to grab a tissue to wipe off her glasses. The affidavit states that she was “drenched.”

The water appears to have splashed two other women sitting behind the prosecutor in the front row of the courtroom gallery.

Meanwhile, James can be seen standing up and twice jerking his arms away as two deputies tried to handcuff him. On their third try, he complied and was escorted back to jail.

During a February hearing, James pleaded guilty to subjecting the prosecutor to “offensive physical contact.”

James will now be headed to prison to start serving his prison term. He has been in jail since his August 2017 arrest for raping the girl.

James was a trusted adult in the girl’s life. On Aug. 8, 2017, the girl had asked her mother if she could walk a short distance to James’ Southeast Portland apartment to watch a movie and her mother said yes, according to a probable cause affidavit.

About 20 minutes later, the mother stopped by to check on her daughter and gave the girl 15 more minutes to finish watching the movie and then come home, investigators say.

About 15 minutes later, the girl rushed home crying, ran straight into the bathroom and shut the door, the affidavit states. The mother opened the door to discover “blood everywhere” and the girl said James had forced sex and other sexual acts on her, investigators say.

Bottomly found James guilty of a long list of crimes, including first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, first-degree sexual abuse and initiating a false police report for making up a story about being robbed and stabbed to draw attention away from the girl’s report of sexual assault.
