I'm guessing that many know how to touch type, so I'm curious where and
how you learned.

I took typing class in the mid 70s, mostly because it was a class full
of girls :)

We used IBM Selectric typewriters, and I found that I became quite good
at typing. I didn't really plan to learn something useful as this was
pre-computer times, but it has paid off well for me (plus, I met girls).

I once took a typing speed test for a job in the 80s, and they told me
they were surprised at my speed. I got the job :)

Anyway, I'm glad I learned early.

How about you?

I started learning that a bit at home with an online tool
(https://www.schreibtrainer-online.de/), but didn't continue.
I should start again. I know mostly type blind, but with 4 fingers and
mostly only words, this sounds a bit strange but other people handle it
the same way. I can type words blindly, but not single letters.

Although, I did the first typing experiments on my grandmother's
typewriter as a child.

The mechanics are great and I still use that to fill out forms because
I have a terrible handwriting.

Must have been a great audio experience.

I regret that I can't touch type yet and didn't start learning that in
the past. I focused on other computer stuff instead.

Nice, a real typewriter!

Yeah, quite a noisy classroom :)

My wife types as you do. She's pretty fast, and can type quite a few words
without looking. If I ask her to type a string of letters, she can't do it,
which seems odd to me only because I guess I have a different way of how I
"think" about what I'm doing as I type.

I don't think I really "think" about it at all. I can copy words from a
book typing them in while holding a conversation with someone. Kind of odd,
but kind of cool.

I'm still quite a fast typist, but I suck typing on a phone :)

Me too. I had a smartphone for 4 years, but hated using it. Too
annoying to type on it, so I didn't replace it when it broke.

I really needed a smartphone for a tremendous amount of chat, including
group chats, when I was working. I was a restaurant manager up until I
retired, so I was constantly being contacted by the restaurant when not
there, or by employeees who were not there (to bother me) when I was
there, so I really had no choice but to contantly be using my phone.

Now that I'm retired, my phone tends to just sit on a table and I need
to remember to charge it now and then, lol.
