I've been messing with some of the old Usenet archives from archive.org, and imported a few into an rslight install.

It's interesting to see some of the old posts. The oldest so far is 2003, but I plan to work on some older ones as well. The older posts need some header mods to work, but they import nicely.

I'm doing this just for fun, hopefully I can get some 90s stuff imported eventually.

Attached pic is an example.

Number Five is alive! More input!

Do you remember that?

Some show the path in the footer. And some of the path names are quirky.

The 80s and 90s were the pinnacle of history. The explosion of plastic
toys, personal computing, BBS and Internet, boom boxes, break dancing,
endless cheesy movies, the CD and mp3, etc. Everything changed so fast
and people had a blast doing it.
> Attached pic is an example.

I was looking at those archives the other day. One had like 300+ GB of
messages. Just amazing!

You might like these:

Old Usenet : https://olduse.net/ (messages from 40 years ago)

Usenet Archives : https://usenetarchives.com/

The old net.* hierarchy from the early 1980s is very interesting. It
shows a very different culture than today.

Nice! Thanks for the link. I was not aware of the site.

I've read some of the old posts in downloads from archive.org, but not
set up to read as groups like the above link.

I "trained" a 7 char length markov chain on old usenet archives a few years ago and I thought the generated output was quite amusing.

Old Usenet may be cycling through a lot of old messages that
aren't available in public archives. It looks like he has some from the
first year of network news. You might ask him where he got his archives
from and compare some original net.* groups to see if there's a
difference from the ones at archive.org.

I've seen some very popular stuff disappear into the ether over the
decades. I'm glad some people are staying on top of the memory hole lid.

All I can remember is beepers, payphone, bbs with credit card numbers, bank modem logins, hack pbx boxes. Oh there I forgot about Taxes Paid exchanges. Z-cash is based on that only they are using blockchain instead of hardware. Colombian flake from ether... It's good to be able.
I even remember the 70s to some extent.
