I've added disk caching in addition to memcache support to rslight.
Testing now on www.novabbs.com.

The config file now gives the option to choose between using memcached,
diskcache or disabling caching.

If you are using memcached now, it will be necessary to use the new
config file. memcache.inc.php will be ignored in favor of cache.inc.php,
where you can select caching method and modify settings.

I'm finding that with a ssd, disk caching is faster than memcached. With
a real hd, it may not be a good choice. Also, disk space is "cheaper"
than ram, so you can have a much larger cache before expiring things.

This is still in 'devel', just putting this here in case anyone is
interested.

I am running rslight servers that will probably never have more than a dozen or two users with a handful of groups. In my use case such optimizations are unnecessary and the present one more layer to troubleshoot if something breaks. Is there a setting to ignore these new caching features? Are they disabled by default or do I need to explicitly set both types of caching to off?

Caching is disabled by default.

You can verify in $config_dir/cache.inc.php:
$enable_cache = false;

This sets all caching OFF.

To enaable:
$enable_cache = 'memcached'; or
$enable_cache = 'diskcache';
