Hello!

How is spell checking in Claws Mail handled in FreeBSD?

I installed aspell de-aspell and en-aspell. Also tried hunspell
packages. enchant is also installed.

How can I further diagnose that?

kind regards

textproc/enchant

Possibly just textproc/hunspell
<URL:https://www.freshports.org/textproc/enchant/>

>How can I further diagnose that?

There might be a command line interface:
<URL:https://www.freshports.org/textproc/hunspell/>

If you can duplicate, might want to file a bug with upstream:
<URL:https://github.com/hunspell/hunspell/issues>

It installs enchant and hunspell itself, so those are the ones. I have it
working. I seem to remember something about installing them first to make
it pick them up. Might be worth deinstalling just claws-mail, then
reinstalling. That shouldn't mess up mailboxes etc.

I see that that textproc/hunspell does not bundle its dictionaries:
# pkg query %do hunspell
# pkg query %ro en-hunspell

Possibly, the OP will need to install one or more:
# pkg search hunspell
