Absolutely, that safe needs robbing and it was part of some side mission
a journo asked me to do. So grabbing that little extra XP too.

I remember also that the first game had a very large inventory so you
ended up with enough guns for a small army (well, at least a few
platoons). But eventually the game would say sorry, your inventory is
full. And then you'd dump all the guns at a store and have money and
nothing much to spend it on... I think they cut that whole inventory
thing in the sequels? You just had a generic gun in different flavors.

That inventory system was really something too; designed for consoles,
it was just a pain to use. Unfortunately, Bioware took all the
complaints about the inventory and loot and decided, rather than
improve it, they'd just wipe it all out in the sequels. Bad as it was
in the first Mass Effect, at least there was some semblance of
inventory and loot. It's why the game remains my favorite of the
series, despite all its rough edges. The later games pretty much
abandoned the CRPG genre to become cover-shooters with dialogue
systems. Fun, but not my preferred type of game.

Well for once I can say I played some games but none of them for more
than a few hours each.

Fallout 2
---------

I've had this on Steam for several years but never really got into it as
the graphics made my eyes bleed. I finally thought this was one of the
classic RPG's I'd never played so went searching for which mods to go
for. Finding one that apparently fixes, and adds content, but most
importantly allows higher resolutions while still having everything
readable I fired it up.

Am I enjoying it yes, did it make me realise that all the
'standardisation' of how a CRPG is didn't exists when it was made,
that's another yes. I actually had to resort to reading the manual.

Genesis Noir
------------

This has been on my wishlist for ages and being on a deep sale I thought
why not. So far I think I like it as it feels like a walking sim with
some very point-and-click puzzles. The standout part though, the art
style. It's just weird and I think that's what carries the game not the
gameplay itself. I think it's very much got all the hallmarks of being a
marmite game.

Annoying fact, I just fired up Amazon games to see what's available and
bugger this is on it, oh well.

Close Combat: Cross of Iron
---------------------------

I've always been hesitant of getting this as it's a remake, well kinda,
of CC:III where all the faults are still present (pathfinding is a good
example) and what you're really getting is higher resolutions. The
problem, the normal price is £35 which is just ridiculous considering
the little amount effort that has gone into it. I finally relented,
another deep sale helped, and I love it just as much as when I first
played it. The stirring music, the bird song at the start of of battle
before all hell breaks lose and the screams of men.

The thing I've always liked about the CC games are that they take the
bits I like about RTS'es, remove the parts I don't like (base building
and quickly degenerating into the main tactic is produce as many units
as possible and mindless throw them at the enemy) and then put that in a
wargaming setting.

I think it's good that we've finally got out of the mentality that
computer games are all about being challenged when people can take all
sorts of things from games.

I have played it quite a few years ago but gave up after several hours
as although I liked the whole premise the bugs were just too much. If it
wasn't the random crashes, it was suddenly 'dropping' through the
landscape and becoming stuck causing a reload. That also didn't fill me
with confidence that I wasn't going to 'break' the game without
realising it.

As you haven't mentioned this at all I'm presuming it's much improved.

That's a game that took a lot of my 10p's and there was a certain level
of satisfaction in being a player who knew about the hidden flags and
citadels.

I've watched it a few times over the years and do like it as it depicts
soldiers not as heroes but instead just trying to survive. Another one
in the same type of genre is Stalingrad although it's more bleak. My
favourite war movie of all time is not the movie version but the TV
series of Das Boot. I watched it when I was a child in my parents
kitchen and every couple of years I crack open the DVD and watch all
episodes back-to-back. It captures wonderfully the mundane existence on
a submarine punctuated with sheer terror.

I've never tried for Perfection but from what I understand it is easier

It depends on what news reader you are using. Google your news reader

Did it really have much crafting? It's been a while but now that I
thought about it I do remember crafting ammo sometimes. I don't mind a
little crafting for a damage bonus.

I have a vague memory that anti-venom was something you really needed in
some areas but as I usually made an enemy of the Legion, I had no
shortage of that from them. I guess you could buy it from them if you
were friendly?

Lacking context, this is a very confusing comment that makes me
question my reality. Like, I start wondering, is this a problem with
all churches or only the ones near where you live? ;-)
