Games, games and more games! Just when you thought you had enough, one
more becomes available. My clicking finger is red and numb from adding
all these freebies to the shopping cart. Will this ordeal never end?

* Kill Knight
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2694420/KILL_KNIGHT/
I mean, I'll give it to Epic. At least they're exposing
us to games most of us have never heard of before. That's
a worthy cause in and of itself. It's just that I think
most people were expecting bigger and more recognizable
titles to be part of their Christmas freebies. "Kill
Knight" is a top-down bullet-hell shooter. It looks okay,
for an example of the type. But it doesn't really seem to
do anything to stand out from its peers. It's library-
fodder; one of those games you add and maybe will remember
it exists in five years when you can't think of anything
better to play.

Just a few more days, and it will all be over. We can do it. We must!
Into the breach again, friends, and remember: we do this for The
Number!

24 hours to grab this one (less if Epic's servers go belly-up again).

Once again, I prove that spelling (and not just maths) is hard. Also,
my spellcheck doesn't look at the subject line. Obviously, it should
have read: FREE GAME: Kill Knight

I apologize for the typo.

Do I still get my Internet Points? ;-)

I was wondering why it was a steam link, Mike S. gets the internet point!

(Because everyone knows correcting others steals their internet points,
that's why everyone always tries to do it even if they're wrong.)

Yes, thanks Spalls. This looks like something I might immediately fire up.

Do you see what's happening here? He's not even bothering to beta
test the links for us to be sure they're safe before spamming the
masses with them, much less the actual software.

Covid++ anyone? :)

Ack! Two stupid flubs in one post! Even _I_ don't think I deserve the
Internet Points now!

(Whenever 'researching' games for my announcements, I always go to
Steam for information. The Epic website is pretty useless in actually
telling you what the game is about and whether it's worth getting or
not. So I always need to have Steam and the Epic website open.
Obviously, I grabbed the URL from the wrong source.

(This sort of problem could have been avoided if Epic made their
client --or store-- actually worth using. But I'm sure they're working
on that and we'll see an improvement any day now.

(Yup... any day now.)

Well I fired it up, went through the tutorial and played one game. It
doesn't seem to have the roguelike progression that tends to keep me
interested, nor any character progression at all. It has some weird
fancy combo stuff you probably need to do to progress much like firing
again while reloading in the middle of the reload bar to start firing
again with more damage bullets for a second, which I got fairly good at.
It's got a number of other fancy combo things too. Too much for me to
get all that. Sure I could probably eventually figure out when to do
what and get proficient at it, but the levels I went through were pretty
much all similar and not particularly interesting. Can't recommend.

I quite enjoyed Robotron when I was younger, but it was one of the
games that dissauded me from arcade games and had me seeking shelter
in the adventure and strategy genres.

Sure, it was fun to scamper about, dodging projectiles and rescuing
humans seconds before they got chomped by the robots. I absolutely
loved the idea of the game --a post-apocalyptic setting world where
humans were the endangered species and I, a genetically engineered
super-soldier, had to fight the robots to rescue the few survivors--
felt amazingly fresh.

But the endlessness of the game turned me off against arcades. It was
just the same over and over again, except a tad bit faster and more
unfair until electronic reflexes surpassed my own. It felt so utterly
pointless (not to mention unfair) that by the fifth or six level, I
usually lost interest. And --thanks (at least in part) to Robotron-- I
realized that was a common mechanic to pretty much every arcade game.
It really put me off video games for a while.

And another coin in the bin.

Same situation in space invaders, asteroids, etc. Eventually arcade
games got to stuff that changed beyond just getting faster & harder,
like power ups in galaga, etc.

Robotron was never my favorite either, but I enjoyed it for a bit. I
probably didn't even get as far into it as you, maybe 3rd wave.
