Now that Google no longer archives Usenet (or, at least, no longer
offers public access. I'm convinced Google is still scraping Usenet
for their own use), is there anywhere you can search newer messages?
It turns out, yes, there is. Although perhaps 'search' is inaccurate,
since it is more like 'browsing'. But we takes what we can gets.

To start, there's narkive.com. You can peruse the most popular
categories (no idea how that's decided) simply by visiting the root
domain https://narkive.com, or browse specific newsgroups by
preceeding the domain with the newsgroup in question (e.g.,
https://comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action.narkive.com. It supposedly has a
full archive spanning decades (not tested).

There's also http://al.howardknight.net which also reputedly has a
decades-long archive. It also has a search feature! Unfortunately, it
only searches by exact message IDs (e.g.,
<Nppfo.12879$45.1459@newsfe29.ams2>). This makes the archive more
useful for perma-linking to specific posts than browsing old posts.

And, of course, there's still groups.google.com. Its archives remain
accessible, but there's no new updates past 22 February 2024. (browse
specific newsgroups by adding the group name as a suffix to the URL,
e.g., https://groups.google.com/g/comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action)

Post any others you may know about.

You can supposedly search if you get an account and sign in,
unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to do that.

As a workaround you can use google to search it though:

site:https://comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action.narkive.com/ souls

for instance, but it's obviously not searching the full archive, as I
only get 3 results.

That could be useful at least, but if I can find it with narkive, I
could just link that I guess.

I just found this one, but it seems to only go up to 2022 for our group
at least:

I'm getting some inkling that if you have one of the paid Usenet
services you can search their archive. Apparently narkive pulls from
Giganews.

**** This one seems to work at least back to 2022 and after gg stopped.
Looks like it might be the best one so far. I've read it has limited
retention though, so might not be complete, and if it does go back only
2 years, that won't be good in a couple years.

* Seems you might be able to post from here if you make an account, or
you can just browse as guest. This might be useful for me, but it just
shows posts and not threads which is difficult to use. I don't see how
you can search, or if you can. Uses eternal-september.
