The best description of Seattle I've ever heard was 'a beautiful woman who
is sick all the time'. I've been there when it wasn't raining and riding
the bike paths harvesting the blackberries was very pleasant.

The last time I was there I had a pleasant trip up the coast from Newport
OR. Then when I woke up in Port Angeles it was pouring. I was the first
car in the bow of the Kingston ferry but it wasn't very scenic. I couldn't
even see the Edmonds terminal until we were about 100 yards out. It
finally stopped raining when I crossed Stevens Pass.

My most memorable trip was Thanksgiving weekend of 1990 when I came down
off Snoqualmie to find the floating bridge had sank. Luckily I was headed
for the Millstone coffee plant in Everett and didn't have to deal with the
people returning from their holiday tryimg to re-route.

The remaining real hobby shop in town is run by an old lady on her way out
and is open a couple of hours two days a week. It isn't much but if you

RadioShack is long gone. I picked up some Arduino stuff during their going
out of business sale. Unlike furniture stores they sold everything
including the shelves.

That's another example of heading to Amazon, AdaFruit, or SparkFun rather
than supporting a local business. There is a maker space at the library
with scanners, laser cutters, 3D printers, and microprocessors but no
local source if a kid starts a project.

If I'd continued with the lifestyle I had in my '20s I wouldn't be posting
drivel to c.o.l.a. today... I'm feeling it a bit after another day of up
gullies, across ridges, and down the other side but I'll take that over
gumming down oatmeal in a nursing home.

Same shit, different scale. When I moved here in '89 it was 48,430; now
it's 77,757. It's harder to hide 30,000 extra people in a city
constrained by rivers and mountains.

I started up Hayes Creek like he shows but there is another trail up the
ridge id you know it's there. You have to cut into the woods and pick up
what looks like a game trail. It gets a little better and has several
switchbacks and even a little bridge. Deer don't do bridges so someone
built it. The FS calls those 'social trails' and they aren't marked or on
many maps.

The weather forecast called for possible showers but it was sunny and very
pleasant on the point. An eagle was perched on the snag shown in the
video. He flew off before I could figure out how to use the phone's
camera.

On the was back I went west on the ridge to the 'official' trail he had
hiked up. Instead of going back down the creek I went up the ridge on the
other side to an unnamed viewpoint on the east edge of the ridge, down the
north side and around the foot of the ridge to the car.

Fitbit's verdict: 15,092 steps, 6.93 miles, and 318 active zone minutes.
They score the intense/peak zone double so it really was 90 minutes in the
moderate zone and 114 in the intense/peak. I've got a pedometer app that
claimed 15864 steps and 7.26 miles. They sometimes differ wildly but were
close today.

The Charge 6 tries to figure out if you're exercising although you can set
it manually. With all of the above it decided I'd taken a 33 minute walk
at 1534 which would correspond to the time I was walking down from the
last ridge.

I was never much into jogging. There is a Blackfoot surname that describes
me: Heavy Runner. Unlike DFS I don't record the stats in an Access
database although Fitbit (Google) does send a weekly summary. I've been
doing hikes like that most of my life and I don't know if the data adds
anything but nerd factor. I'd bump the bottom of the moderate zone up a
little but the zones are calculated from your age and aren't editable.

Now to figure out what I'll do tomorrow if it doesn't rain. Maybe the

There's a pedestrian only trail on to the east that isn't shown that makes
a nice loop of about 3 miles. The long form continues up Mt. Dean Stone
for a 10 miles, 2700' elevation gain hike.

I've been hiking rough terrain for a year or three and so far haven't
twisted an ankle. I did bring trekking poles. I don't always use them but
several of the connecting trails are multi-use with dirt bikes allowed.
There are some steep pitches with loose gravel.

They are genuine FS trails so they aren't as bad as an area I hike where
the trails were created by mountain bikers. I've never seen them in action
but they must be crazier than the proverbial shit house rat. You need
poles to lever yourself up some of the pitches. If the terrain isn't bad
enough they've built some jumps to finish off the job. That's what I use
for a real cardio workout.

The third one is the closest. Big rocks and sturdy pines and doug firs if
you wipe out. On the ones off the side of the ridge I don't think stopping
is an option no matter how far back you scoot your butt.

There is a more formal area with some trails that are pedestrian/bike and
some are bike/downhill only. It's bike only so I never walked it but I
assume the 'Bjorn Again' is the hairiest. At the start of the trail there
is a big sign 'Skills Test' that's about a 3' vertical drop. It says if
you're not comfortable doing that you better take 'Hello Kitty' down.

I've ridden single track but it's always been on trails that I rode up
first before going down. When I get to the point where I'm in the lowest
granny gear and lifting the front wheel I figure I've reached the point
where my downhill skills are at the limit.
