This isn't the first RISC-V board to run Ubuntu and Ubuntu wasn't the
first distro to offer a RISC-V implementation but the ongoing work is
interesting. afaik none of them have the performance of a Raspberry Pi 5
but give them time.

ARM is getting all the love but the RISC-V ISA is open source with no
royalty fees to Arm Ltd. The original development was done at UC Berkeley
but the RICV-V Foundation started in 2015 to administer it. In 2019 the
foundation moved to Switzerland and became RISC-V International.

Why is that important? The move was to avoid any sanctions or trade
restrictions the US loves to slap on people that don't agree with them.
This makes China very happy. Arm Ltd is in Britain, a US puppet so that
could eventually become a problem. One example is Espressif Systems on
Shanghai that has a number of microcontrollers manufactured by TSMC. Even
Nvidia is looking at RISC-V for the next gen Falcon replacement.

https://www.xda-developers.com/forget-windows-arm-risc-v/

Windows on RISC-V probably will never happen. That article has a paragraph

"RISC-V is still a massively niche architecture, and while companies like
Google and Qualcomm seem to be invested in its future success, that
doesn’t mean it’s really useful now. In fact, the US government is already
beginning to investigate the risk (see what I did there?) of its usage in
Chinese tech products, as it’s seen as a threat to the tech that the US
can influence or outright exert control over, like Arm and x86."

Can't let that world hegemony slip away...

Housing in corporate barracks? Company housing was a thing in the US. Lose
your job, lose your hovel. I assume it works the same in China.

It is true China owns the Latin American EV market and would completely
devastate the US market. Funny how the government can effectively build
'walls' depending on whose ox is getting gored.

There's just no way the US can compete with them on price. I'm

The argument here is that China will simply pass on that tariff to the
customer on the price of whatever it is they're selling. My hope is that
they'll do exactly that so that customers no longer benefit from the
lower price of cheap Chinese goods. If they're sold at the same price as
goods from the Western world, nobody in their right mind would choose them.

Re: 200 % tariffs on Chinese EVs.

The global economy fell into the hot chamber pot when Trump said,
"We don't need Chiiina" & China replied, "We don't need America.".

We'd do well to mimic them (China).

That idea has some merit. In China if you're not Han you're not shit. The
US adaptation would need to use another ethnic group. Their treatment of
the Uyghurs could be a model for dealing with the 'newcomers'.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_minorities_in_China

51 ethnic minorities and Han are still 91.9% of the population.

If Walamrt couldn't sell cheap Chinese goods a sizable portion of the
population would be running around naked and hungry. The government has to
finely tune tariffs to protect favored industries while allowing cheap
commodities so hoi polloi don't realize how badly they are screwed.

Then there are the expensive Chinese goods like iPhones... It is
increasing difficult to find anything in any price range that is not made
in China. Back in the '70s and '80s our leaders decided a service economy
was much nicer than those nasty old smokestack industries and gave it all
away. By 'leaders' I mean both corporate CEOs and the politicians that
facilitated their attempts to increase profits with no regard to the
effect on the nation. After all, the pols well well paid for their
efforts.

You don't have to go that far.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serpent_Mound

There are quite a few other impressive mounds in the southeast and I have
a suspicion that the people humping dirt around in baskets weren't doing
it for the sheer fun of it.

After the Europeans arrived the tribes in the southeast were still
enslaving other tribes. When they saw the white men importing Africans
they had an epiphany; Africans make much better slaves than Indians. When
the whites pointed the natives toward Oklahoma and told them to hit the
Trail of Tears they took their slaves with them. Unlike the whites the
Indians had fairly strict taboos against miscegenation.

Authoritarian regimes with little regard for human rights
are not my cup of tea.

If you like the place so much, why not immigrate?

China hates Americans.
I'm too old to learn Chinese.
The pandemic destroyed me.

Considering how people in my part of town live, I wouldn't be entirely
against a social credit score. They might finally make their stops, use
the appropriate traffic lanes and demonstrate common courtesy. Of
course, these things would also be possible if people converted to
Catholicism, attended church and learned to be humble.

America only needs China if it intends to keep going with the push for
electric vehicles. Since some of the materials needed to produce the
batteries are found there exclusively, avoiding any kind of trade with
them if "environmentalism" is in your interests would be foolish. By
sticking to the internal combustion engine, it would indeed be possible
to avoid trade with them and to actually impoverish them through a
refusal to do so.

Blackberry used to produce their phones in North America, but then the
iPhone showed the world what could be and Johnny Dipshit decided that he
needed to spend his entire life on a phone.

Emigrate. <https://www.dictionary.com/browse/emigrate>

Immigrate is to come in, emigrate is to leave. I don't know why everyone
including the media keeps making that mistake.

Even the Chinese don't learn Chinese. You'd be learning Mandarin or

Unfortunately, when it was time to upgrade from my the LG G6 which was
no longer receiving updates and kept reminding me that I was insecure
through Google Pay (got it in 2018, it received its last update in 2019,
stopped using it in 2021), the only options my provider made available
to me were Androids and iPhones. It was between a Samsung, a Google, an
Apple or some obscure brand. I did my research and got an Apple because
it was the only brand allowing me to hold onto my phone for more than
two years in terms of updates. A few weeks after I got it, Samsung
announced that they would provide their phones with four years of
updates, so I guess I wasn't the only one annoyed with the two-year support.

Oh, I forgot to give you the price. It was $30 or so over two years.

Look around you. How many items say 'Made in China'? Even the NRA's gimme
hats with a proud American flag are made in China.

As far as lithium, the US arguably has the largest deposits in the world.
As late as the '70s lithium was actively mined at Kings Mountain in North
Carolina. Like everything else in the '80s it was cheaper to mine lithium
in Chile.

albemarle/

The Thacker Pass area in Nevada is even a larger potential source. There
are problems in exploiting these resources. NIMBY, environmentalists,
Indians that think their grandfather camped there in 1850, and even
frigging NASA:

tapping-into-u-s-lithium-reserves.html

Yttrium?

What happened to Mountain Pass?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_Pass_mine

Same story, cheaper to source the materials from China. Even if it is
reborn the Chinese government has a 8% interest. How the hell did that
happen?

The US sold its birthright for a bowl of shekels and that goes way beyond
ICEs vs EVs.

Yeah, sure. Most of my extended family were Catholic and I never noticed a
lot of humility.

Considering what they pay illegal alien chicken pluckers at Tyson, they
couldn't even afford Walmart. I'm not sure Walmart workers can even afford
Walmart.

Personally Walmart is my store of last resort so I may visit once or twice
a year. It does tend to look like pork on parade so I guess the clientele
isn't going hungry at least.

Maybe 'assembled in North America' but I'm not certain about that. Perhaps
the rebooted Blackberry will be better although I'd bet on Vietnam or
India rather than onshore.
