So now we know that despite speaking endlessly about Excel, the reason
you use Windows is because it provides you the quickest access to free
pornography which is also likely to serve you malware.

Windows includes Linux as a subsystem.

Windows can't be trusted to run Azure -- that is a
job for Linux. Microsoft even has their own Linux
distribution for such things.

You're stuck in the 90's. Get real.

Winblows is fun on suitable hardware, but that's ever-changing. Linux
will run well on aging hardware, even mine is nicer with it and it's
less than four years old (referring to running Win11, Win10 would
still be fine).

Even though this laptop ran Windows 11 well, it is a lot more responsive
running Fedora (or even Ubuntu) than it ever was on Microsoft's
operating system. There is no inexplicable, occasional slowdown and no
fTPM stuttering whatsover (I would have experienced it by now). In fact,
the Linux experience has been so stellar this time around that I'm
rethinking an eventual purchase of a Mac.

I would get an ARM laptop and just delete Win11, instead of paying for
Apple's shit.

Yeah, I agree with that move. I mostly just want the excellent power
consumption. The excellent integration between Apple devices is neat,
but I can live without it.

You're running the most woke, DEI-infested distro there is. The distro
of MSNBC and Kamala Harris and RuPaul.

How would that matter in just using the distro? Chick-fil-A tastes
fine to me despite their politics.

You can sure see where DuFuS's "brain" is at, can't you.

I think Macs can run Linux also. (Although I think you're choices are
limited with the ARM CPU — not sure, though.)

Once I have evidence that OpenMandrive works correctly, I plan to
switch. However, there is no shortage of terrible distributions that
don't work as they should, so I am not in any hurry. Fedora works great.

Yeah, I'm starting to get to that same point. I don't give a dollar to
the Fedora team despite using their distribution. I prefer to help out
KDE since they make the desktop environment which makes transitioning
from Windows fun. If Fedora were to die tomorrow, I wouldn't look for
the best Fedora alternative as much as the best KDE distribution.

I think that there is a distribution being made for the Mx line of
chips, but I have yet to see a Mac running it. Considering the issue
that existed with Yellow Dog Linux back in the PowerPC days, I'm not
surprised that some Mac owners would be reluctant to try it out.

Quite a few Mac users are installing Linux on their Intel machines, but
that's because Apple doesn't support them any more. I would imagine that
that time will come with the first ARM Macs at some point. Until then there
probably aren't going to be too many Linux distributions catering to the ARM
Macs.

At one point I used Mandrake (I think it was Mandrake, maybe Mandrake's
predecessor (?), can't remember).

It truly will be sad when the people who own an M1 Mac lose support from
the company. That is a wonderful machine using the first processor that
allowed the company to differentiate itself from the PC line in this
decade. It is fast, it is energy-efficient and it is relatively
inexpensive for anyone interested in owning a computer from them. That
computer should not be thrown into a bin because it's too old; it should
continue to be supported by open-source. At the same time, Apple made it
nearly impossible to change the storage or upgrade the RAM on those
machines, giving the world the impression that they want those machines
to either be thrown out or recycled after half a decade.

There wasn't a predecessor. It was originally based on Red Hat but moved
away. It must have been 25 years ago but I remember it as a smooth
installation on an old Compaq.

Speaking of smooth I upgraded to Ubuntu 24.04 last night. It's not a
problem for me but it's still the 6.8.0 kernel. The Fedora box is up to
6.12.8.

It wasn't particularly smooth. I had to manually kill and purge postgres
before it would continue, then it failed on Thunderbird when trying to
move to a snap. I was able to install it manually afterwards.

The strangest part was the cleanup where it spent 25 minutes 'searching
for obsolete software'. I have no idea what part of darkest Africa it was
searching.

Admittedly, after installing the 6.12.8 in Fedora today and getting to
100%, it refused to restart. After I forced it, it worked fine though.

It seems like I remember seeing that the newest ARM Macs are reverting back
to upgradeable RAM and SSDs. But I may have misread that.

You're right. I guess I confused myself by thinking about what happened
_after_ Mandrake and Conectiva merged into Mandriva... and then went belly
up resulting in Mageia and, later, OpenMandriva. But it was definitely
Mandrake that I installed.

My problem with Ubuntu (besides not liking the desktop) is use of Snaps. I
like to customize Firefox a little and it's easy with a userChrome.css file
in the chrome directory of your profile directory. But I couldn't figure out
where to do this on a Snap package. I figured out FlatPaks okay, but Snaps
seem to be a whole different creature. And I don't like Snaps showing up as
"partitions" when I do a "df -h" command.

If that is the case, I'll probably end up getting one next. At the very
least, I want my next laptop not to have NVIDIA anything inside of it.
Using it in Linux is dreadful, and I have to reinstall a kernel and the
NVIDIA drivers every so often because something decided to break.
