Fact.

That behaviour was part of why I moved to Forte Agent. Forte's awful
filtration system is why I gave up, went back to Betterbird, and just
abandoned trying to get blocknews to work right. I'm back on
eternal-september.org.

Pan Windows worked for an hour or so, then came the screen glitches.

GuhNoo/FOSS crapware bites everyone in the ass at some point.

Yeah, blocknews on Thunderbird/Betterbird has degraded into nearly
unusable as of late. Read 10 posts (sometimes ONE), then get dropped
connections that won't reconnect until you restart the newsreader.
Submit posts that don't show up for 10 minutes, if at all.

I've already had to restart the app 3x this morning just to read cola
from BetterBird.

At one point I had to remove the blocknews acct from Betterbird,
uninstall Betterbird, dig into C:\users\appdata and delete a Thunderbird
folder or two, reinstall BBird and resubscribe to cola to get it to
work. What a fiasco.

Eternal september is as reliable as ever. And it auto-filters some
crossposting clowns. But it's too slow for me.

So I recently tried Claws Mail and Pan, but neither can hold a candle to
the Birds. XanaNews is pretty good, though.

I spent a month and wrote my own very easy to use newsreader in PyQt. A
few clicks to choose a group and download N posts and you're subscribed.
Couple clicks to delete the subscription. Has filtering and sorting
and bolding/not bolding and replies.

It's a work-in-progress, but I'll give it away (public domain) someday
when I finish a few crucial features, like save drafts and save sent.

I gave up and am using Eternal September. I went back and forth with
their technical team and they found nothing wrong, so I doubt that it
will ever get fixed.

I did that and it still didn't work.

I can manage with the slow speed of Eternal September. Hopefully,
Blocknews will fix everything by the time it becomes unbearably slow.

My newsreader (Jeff-Relf.Me/z1.HTM) works fine with BlockNews because
it remember the last 10 Message-ID's, instead of relying on article numbers.
& This allows me to switch servers on the fly.

When stepping down to a lesser server (e.g. to Eternal-September)
it notifies me when the lesser server doesn't have one of the 10 Message-ID's.

Also, it notifies me when a Message-ID got leapfrogged
( because BlockNews couldn't keep up ). See also: News.US.Usenet-News.NET

Article numbers are irrelevant to maintaining a connection to the server.

Blocknews drops/resets the connection all the time, and frequently won't
reconnect. Sometimes switching to another server then back to BN works,
sometimes it doesn't and I have to restart the newsreader.

Eternal-september doesn't have connection problems. It's just very slow
to connect or download anything.

"Lesser" because the admin blocked you for HTML in your posts?

I think ES is lesser because it's slower and has shorter retention/fewer
messages.

BN kept up well in the past. Betterbird and BN can be a pain to use lately.

Have you tried fastusenet?

DFS: ES is lesser because it[...] has shorter retention/fewer messages.

Ditto. It's free for the same reason a worm dangling on a hook is free.

I have no connection or speed problems that wouldn't be easily fixed
by restarting the download ( with the same or a different server ).
I switch servers on the fly.

I just signed up with them. For $2, I don't mind paying for something
faster than what Eternal September has to offer. It's too bad that
Blocknews dropped the ball.

I signed in but I notice that Betterbird can't connect to them using an
SSL connection. Using the regular protocol though, it works fine.

If you don't use article number, how do you know you've downloaded the

Usenet-News has problems quite similar to Blocknews;
when one fails, I switch to the other.

Another option: "AstraWeb.COM".

The NNTP "Group" command tells me the TOP article number.
Using a Message-ID "BookMark", I get the LOW article number.

I repeatedly request up to 100 articles at a time
via a block of 100 NNTP commands
( because one may NOT specify a range, from LOW to TOP ).

Why do you supposed that usenet-news.net has the same problems as
blocknews? It's really starting to feel as though someone is purposely
trying to kill off Usenet.

Because they draw on the same source, in Texas, including same article numbers.

As little as I paid for Blocknews and Usenet-News, I don't feel like
paying for another. I'll settle for using an unencrypted connection on
port 443 with Usenet-News for now.

If you're just using text newsgroups, you might want to check out
individual.net. rbowman seems to have good luck with it — I think it costs
about $12 (U.S.) a year (depending on the current exchange rate).

Personally I don't have any trouble with eternal-september. But I only
monitor about five text newsgroups, so it's not heavy usage.

So you're now at usenet-news? Never heard of them until now.

Eternal September is fine, but it is admittedly slow. It routinely hangs
on one article or another. I don't mind paying a few dollars to get a
faster response to all of the Nux Vomica, Diego Garcia, Farley Flud,
Joel Crump and Hugh Huntzinger posts my filters automatically delete.

I have like 90 newsgroups (though most are inactive) and I haven't had
many issues. Then again, I use slrnpull to save everything locally.

I've had hangs in eternal-september in the past, but lately it's been
running clean for me.
