Well, if you can name a few Internet service providers which still
provide Usenet access, be my guest. Google, for its part, has finally
disconnected Usenet. It seems that the only people who know about
Usenet now are people who were around in the 90s and grew up with it.
Everyone else has no idea what it is, and wouldn't know how to access
it anyway. I'm not trying to insult the free software community in
saying that Usenet is dead to them; I'm pointing out what I'm seeing.
Even Linux Mint offers access to an exclusive Discord server for
messaging and has forums. They too don't bother with Usenet.

The ISP I was using dropped Usenet sometime in the early 2000's. It takes
a lot of storage to run a NNTP node. Even when it was still up I got much
better performance from a server in Berlin than the one 8 miles away.

That was back when people uploaded lots of pirated content to the
alt.binaries groups. I doubt they still do.

I had the same filter on Pan. I forgot that Forte Agent's filtering
system was so primitive. At the very least, I'm not getting graphical
errors in Agent.

Agent isn't stellar on filtering, not that it matters to me
personally, but using slrn as terrific as it is is not GUI. Agent
runs almost without any difference under Wine, so why would I use
something else? It's what I started using greater than 20 years ago,
when OE wasn't satisfactory.

That was my experience with the last provider who offered Usenet (in the
early or mid 2000's). They contracted to another company for Usenet, I would
tell them that Usenet was NOT working and they would refer me to the
contracting company who NEVER responded. That's when I went with the German
outfit (which eventually became individual.net and became a paid service). I
tried to pay them but the billing outfit they were using didn't like
something about my debit card — so I ended up going to eternal-september
(another German outfit). I've been with them ever since.

I've only used text on Usenet. Individual.net and eternal-september.org have
never had binary newsgroups. That was all I ever needed.

I think the British Pound used to be over $2 (when I bought Sinclair
computer stuff from England). Now it's at $1.27. The euro is at $1.08. The
Canadian dollar used to be almost even (sometimes higher), now it's at 73¢.

Wonder what will happen when the petro-dollar collapses?

I haven't followed it over the years but the last time I remember the
Canadian dollar being at par was in the '60s. Back in the '90s I went to
Kelowna BC frequently so I'd exchange USDs at a bank. I was a treat
getting a wad of multicolored bills totaling about $130 USD for a
Frankiln.

I've been to Mexico when they were going crazy. I never exchanged money
but in a casual transaction the change from $1 US would weigh you down
with all sorts of coins. iirc the Peso was 20,000 to the dollar.

Dobbs rewrites this, it is invalid precedent. States are
liable for denying needed abortions, e.g. TX.
