A pair of Minneapolis officers chanced upon an abducted woman being raped in an alley, leading to her rescue and the arrest of the perpetrator, charges indicate.

According to a criminal complaint, the officers were on routine patrol on Saturday, July 8, when they noticed a vehicle with its lights off in an alley off 31st Street East near Powderhorn Park.

"Officers observed a male standing outside the vehicle near an open passenger door," at which point their drove into the alley; as they approached the car, they "saw the rear lights of the vehicle come on and a naked adult female being pushed out of the vehicle," in distress and screaming for help.

The charges say the vehicle sped off at high speed with its passenger door still open. When officers stopped the vehicle, they identified the suspect as Amanuel Kefale Teshome, a 23-year-old Eagan resident.

Officers could see that his "pants were unzipped and unbuttoned and that his belt was undone."

Meanwhile, other police officers made contact with the victim and noticed that her lip and left cheekbone were swollen. The charges say the woman was crying and "immediately told officers that Defendant raped her."

Per the complaint, she explained that she was trying to get to a liquor store on Lake Street on the evening of July 7 — a number of hours before she was ultimately discovered in the alley — when Teshome offered her a ride.

She accepted the ride, and as soon as the vehicle was moving, the defendant began to "slap and push her head down," threatening violence and telling her to look down so she could not see where she was being taken.

In the alley, the charges say, the man forced her to perform various sex acts and assaulted her continuously as he drove around and made numerous stops.

The woman reported that, during the course of the ordeal, the defendant "repeatedly bit her, punched her, slapped her, strangled her, and pulled her hair."

A forensic nurse later noting "hemorrhaging in Victim’s eyes, petechiae on her scalp, bruises on her breasts, contusions on her back, elbows, and knees, and significant bite marks on her back," the charges say.

Teshome, who has been charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct and one count of kidnapping, is facing up to 80 years behind bars. He's currently being held in a Hennepin County Jail.
