FARIBAULT, Minn. — An Iowa man is facing multiple felonies after a rear-end crash that left multiple people hurt on I-35, and an unborn baby dead last August. Authorities accuse the semi driver of visiting sex websites during his drive that day, and sending a message two minutes before the crash occurred.

Joel Adam Sassmann, 52, was charged for causing the August 2023 crash in Rice County. At about 12:20 p.m. cars on the interstate were slowed down for construction. Officials said Sassmann, driving a semi, drove into the slowed cars causing a chain reaction of crashes involving five vehicles.

According to the criminal complaint, the first vehicle hit had two passengers in the front seats and three young children in the back seats. The front passenger was 31 weeks pregnant and suffered life-threatening injuries. The baby died at the hospital as a result of the crash.

When an officer saw Sassmann's phone, court documents state there was a "semi nude photo of a female" on the screen. When his phone was examined, it was found he had visited a sex chat website and sent multiple messages while driving that day. The criminal complaint states that the last message was sent two minutes before the crash.

Authorities say there were signs alerting drivers of construction starting 9.75 miles ahead of when lanes merged, among other construction warning signs. The weather that day was also clear and dry. After the crash Sassmann told a trooper "everything just stopped," the criminal complaint states.

Sassmann's first court appearance is scheduled for December.

Twin Cities police departments estimate more than 60 homes have been hit across a dozen metro cities by burglars targeting high-end homes with sophisticated tools.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn — In a nice Eden Prairie neighborhood, highlighted by a walking path, the home of Sarah and James Shaser was burglarized on Jan. 9.

"They took jewelry," the Shasers said. "Mainly gold and watches and things like that. They really knew what they were doing."

The Shasers didn't realize it at the time, but they had fallen victim to what metro police departments now believe is a complex burglary ring involving South American suspects that has targeted 60-plus homes across 12 Minnesota cities using sophisticated surveillance and tools like Wi-Fi and cell phone jammers.

Investigators later learned through GPS that the burglars' rental car was parked a couple blocks away where a walking path runs behind the Shasers' home. The couple assumes the thieves scoped out the homes from the path, saw theirs was dark, and figured it would make a good one to target.

The Shasers knew it wasn't an average smash and grab when they saw how the burglars entered.

"It was not a broken window. It was a cut window," the Shasers said. "They cut the window somehow, pulled it out and set it inside, right inside the house."

Then, 10 days later, 1100 miles away, Eden Prairie police learned of an arrest.

"Sometimes you get a break in the case, and this was one of those breaks that really helped us a lot," said Eden Prairie Sgt. Lonnie Soppeland.

A group of four Chilean nationals using fake Argentina IDs was arrested during a burglary in suburban Philadelphia. Radnor Township Police say the youngest suspect, Felipe Sandoval, escaped their custody when he started vomiting in the squad car, loosened his hands from the cuffs, then ran when they let him outside to finish throwing up.

But they charged the other three suspects, Miguel Guzman Pardo, Alejandro Gallardo Sepulveda, and Yanara Venegas Rodriguez, with burglary.

With the help of those Pennsylvania authorities, Eden Prairie police determined Venegas, the female suspect, had a ring belonging to Sarah.

And this Guzman Pardo had left a clear footprint in snow outside the Shasers' window. After being extradited to Hennepin County in August, he pleaded guilty and received his sentence in court on Wednesday. Judge Daniel Moreno gave him a suspended sentence and probation, noting that Guzman Pardo will now be sent to Ohio to face burglary charges there before facing deportation.

Search warrants filed by various Minnesota law enforcement agencies since that January crime Court papers reveal the scope of the investigation into this same group by multiple police departments.

Guzman-Pardo now admits he rented an SUV in Los Angeles on January 2nd.

According to court documents, that SUV with California plates was then tracked using GPS and license plate readers over the next few days near other burglaries in Texas, Oklahoma and Iowa before reaching the Twin Cities on Jan. 9 when the Shaser home was broken into.

Police in Minnetonka, Golden Valley, Chanhassen and St. Louis Park also believed the SUV was connected to burglaries in their cities in that time frame.

After leaving Minnesota, court papers say the rental SUV was traced to burglaries in Chicago, Ohio, then the suburbs of Philadelphia where on January 19th, the suspects were arrested following a series of residential burglaries.

Pennsylvania court documents say inside the vehicle, police found large bags "filled to capacity with items," burglary tools, and a large signal jammer — a device that can disarm surveillance cameras and alarms that rely on Wi-Fi.

As a second wave of these types of burglaries are affecting communities like Medina this fall, the Shasers empathize with the sense of violation other victims are feeling.

"So, my wedding ring of 45 years was sitting by my sink because it needed a diamond replaced in it. They stole that from me," Sarah Shaser said. "So they stole a piece of my heart."

None of Guzman Pardo's co-defendants are charged in Minnesota, and as far as we know, no one has been charged in the latest wave of high-end burglaries.

Woodbury police have arrested a 19-year-old man who allegedly physically abused his six-month-old daughter, causing multiple serious injuries.

Authorities say the investigation began on the morning of Sept. 24, 2024, when a Washington County Child Protection Services social worker alerted a Woodbury Police Department detective to the report of abuse involving the infant.

The social worker had gone to meet the victim and her mother at a local hospital after receiving the report. According to court documents, the victim sustained a fractured femur, a broken wrist and multiple fractured vertebrae. Doctors described the injuries as indicative of child abuse.

The investigation revealed the infant was left in the care of her father, Amir Taquarius Oglesby, 19, at their Woodbury apartment. On Sept. 23, the mother returned home from work at around 4:50 p.m. and noticed that the infant appeared distressed and did not respond to her as usual. When she picked up the child, she cried out in pain, prompting the mother to take her to the hospital after observing swelling in her leg and foot.

On Sept. 25, detectives interviewed Oglesby at the residence. He told investigators that on the afternoon of Sept. 23, he picked up the victim from her bassinet and noticed her right leg was folded behind her left leg. He admitted that he might have moved her too quickly and noticed that her knee looked "weird" and "didn't look right," the documents said. Oglesby also acknowledged to investigators that he has a history of being “rough” with the victim, despite previous warnings to be more gentle.

Regarding the infant’s wrist injury, Oglesby admitted that he had picked her up by one arm, a practice he was advised against. He recalled feeling a "pop" in her wrist a few days earlier but did not report it to the mother. As for the vertebrae fractures, Oglesby claimed that the family dog might have jumped on the victim, but he also admitted to setting her down roughly on previous occasions.

Detectives consulted with hospital doctors about the victim's injuries. They reported that the femur fracture was an impacted break above the knee, consistent with excessive force. The wrist injury was described as being more likely caused by a yanking motion. Additionally, doctors dismissed the explanation of the vertebrae injuries being caused by a dog, noting a lack of corresponding scratches or other marks on the skin. The vertebrae fractures were estimated to be at least two weeks old, leading doctors to diagnose the case as child physical abuse.

On Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2024, Oglesby was taken into custody by Woodbury police and transported to the Washington County Jail, where he remains in custody. He faces a felony charge of malicious punishment of a child, punishable by a sentence of up to five years.

Oglesby made his initial appearance on the charge Wednesday, Oct. 9, where bail was set at $30,000 without conditions or $1,000 conditions, including no contact with the victim, remaining law-abiding and no firearm or weapon possession. His next court date is set for Nov. 20.
