The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday
acknowledged that the agency fell short of expectations in its handling
of the coronavirus pandemic and announced drastic changes for its
operations.

[ SEE: Latest Coronavirus and Vaccine News ]
For 75 years, CDC and public health have been preparing for COVID-19,
and in our big moment, our performance did not reliably meet
expectations, Walensky said in a statement. My goal is a new, public
health, action-oriented culture at CDC that emphasizes accountability,
collaboration, communication and timeliness.

The agency in April announced a review of its structure, systems and
processes. The review came after criticism that the agency was slow to
alter COVID-19 guidance in the face of changing science and often
produced confusing recommendations that were difficult for the public
to decipher.

Never in its 75-year history has [the] CDC had to make decisions so
quickly, based on often limited, real-time and evolving science,
Walensky said at the time. As weve challenged our state and local
partners, we know that now is the time for CDC to integrate the lessons
learned into a strategy for the future.

The full report is expected to be made public sometime this week, but a
summary of potential changes said that the agency is considering
restructuring its website and producing plain language guidance,
according to The Hill. It additionally acknowledged that it takes too
long for CDC to publish its data and science for decision making.

Changes would also include the appointment of Mary Wakefield, a former
Obama administration health official, to lead the agencys move toward
a stronger public health focus. Additionally, the CDC will strengthen
the response team for public health emergencies, according to The New
York Times.
