The Brief
A ferry dock gangway on Georgia's Sapelo Island collapsed Saturday afternoon.
Officials confirm at least seven people were killed.
Crowds gathered on the island for a celebration of its tiny Gullah-Geechee community.
A chaplain for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources was among the dead.
The island is about 60 miles south of Savannah.

SAPELO ISLAND, Ga. - At least seven people were killed Saturday after part of a ferry dock collapsed on Georgia's Sapelo Island, authorities said.

Multiple people were taken to hospitals, and crews from the U.S. Coast Guard, the McIntosh County Fire Department, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and others were searching the water, according to spokesperson Tyler Jones of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, which operates the dock.

Jones said a gangway at the dock collapsed and sent people plunging into the water. It happened as crowds gathered on the island for a celebration of its tiny Gullah-Geechee community of Black slave descendants.

"There have been seven fatalities confirmed," Jones said. "There have been multiple people transported to area hospitals, and we are continuing to search the water for individuals."

Jones said he did not know what caused the gangway to collapse, but officials believe there were at least 20 people on it at the time. The gangway connected an outer dock where people board the ferry to another dock onshore.

Among the dead was a chaplain for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Jones said.

Sapelo Island is about 60 miles (97 kilometers) south of Savannah and is reachable from the mainland by boat.

What is Cultural Day, and why do people gather on Sapelo Island?
Cultural Day is an annual fall event spotlighting the island's tiny community of Hogg Hummock, which is home to a few dozen Black residents. The community of dirt roads and modest homes was founded by former slaves from the cotton plantation of Thomas Spalding.

Small communities descended from enslaved island populations in the South - known as Gullah, or Geechee in Georgia - are scattered along the coast from North Carolina to Florida. Scholars say their separation from the mainland caused residents to retain much of their African heritage, from their unique dialect to skills and crafts such as cast-net fishing and weaving baskets.

In 1996, Hogg Hummock, also known as Hog Hammock, was put on the National Register of Historic Places, the official list of the United States' treasured historic sites. But the community's population has been shrinking for decades, and some families have sold their land to outsiders who built vacation homes.

Tax increases and zoning changes by the local government in McIntosh County have been met by protests and lawsuits by Hogg Hummock residents and landowners. They have been battling for the past year to undo zoning changes approved by county commissioners in September 2023 that doubled the size of homes allowed in Hogg Hummock.

Residents say they fear larger homes will lead to tax increases that could force them to sell land their families have held for generations.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp released a statement asking for all Georgians to pray for those who lost their lives in the collapse.

"Marty, the girls, and I are heartbroken by today’s tragedy on Sapelo Island," Kemp said. "As state and local first responders continue to work this active scene, we ask that all Georgians join us in praying for those lost, for those still in harm’s way, and for their families."

TAMPA, Fla. - A 19-year-old has been arrested in connection with the death of a baby found last spring on the University of Tampa campus.

Brianna Moore was arrested on Friday in Mississippi and charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child, child neglect with great bodily harm, failure to report death, and unlawful storage of human remains.

According to the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office, Moore’s roommates reported hearing the sounds of a baby crying and finding blood in their shared bathroom at McKay Hall on April 27.

They called the University of Tampa Campus Safety, who sent an ambulance to check on Moore. The suspect denied being pregnant and told an officer the blood in the bathroom was from her period.

The next day, Moore’s roommates found a bloody towel inside the suspect’s trashcan and called police once again, according to the Hillsborough County state attorney.

Authorities say they found the dead newborn hidden inside a towel.

When Tampa police interviewed Moore that day, she admitted to delivering the baby in the bathroom and holding the baby tightly to her body until she stopped crying.

She told investigators she placed the baby in a towel and put her in the trashcan.

An autopsy revealed the infant had multiple fractured ribs along her spine and hemorrhaging in her lungs. The Medical Examiner determined the cause of death was asphyxia due to compression of the torso with the manner of death being homicide.

"It breaks my heart to know that this baby girl could still be alive today if this woman had alerted authorities that she needed help. Instead, she took actions that directly led to the death of her newborn baby. This is a difficult and nuanced case to prosecute, and our community must continue to educate women about the many resources available to them in situations like this one. This baby’s death was avoidable," said Hillsborough State Attorney Suzy Lopez.

Moore is currently being held at Lauderdale County (MS) Jail, pending extradition back to Tampa.

Florida lawmakers recently expanded the state’s Safe Haven laws in July to allow parents to anonymously surrender unwanted newborns up to 30 days after birth without any questions. A parent who has just given birth can surrender a child to medical staff at a hospital or any fire station.

Three people have been killed and eight others injured after a shooting at a trail ride following a homecoming football game.

The shooting happened just after midnight on Saturday in Holmes County, Mississippi, according to WJTV.

Local Sheriff Willie March told the outlet that several people had been on a trail ride after Holmes County Consolidated School's homecoming.

An argument reportedly erupted between some young men who had been part of the ride before the shooting happened.

The three victims have since been identified as 25-year-old Martel Gibson, of Durant, 19-year-old Shundra Chestnut, of Kosciusko, and 19-year-old John Jenkins, also of Durant.

March said that some of the injured victims had to be airlifted to a hospital, while others were transported by ambulances.

He told The Clarion Ledger: 'The football team had won the homecoming game and people wanted to go out and celebrate the win, but others didn’t have that same intention.'

March added that there was anywhere from 200 to 300 people celebrating when gunfire erupted.

The sheriff added: 'It was chaos, to tell you the truth. The shooting just started and people started running.'

Tributes have since been paid to Chestnut on social media, with locals describing it as heartbreaking.

Sharing images of her, one person said: 'I don’t wanna believe it I don’t even wanna think about it but I literally cannot focus at all I just keep thinking about you.

'I’m sorry I wasn’t there to push you out the way, I’m sorry you not here no more I don’t wish this pain on anybody at all. My heart hurting so bad.'

Another said: 'I know you will always be with me spiritually, you left something special on a lot of other souls as well!! Forever living, Forever 19.'

One person posted: 'Praying for everyone involved & all of the families. Lord give them strength & understanding.'

Another added: 'Woke up with a heavy heart! Prayers for Holmes County. May God give you peace that surpasses all understanding.'

Holmes County Central High School had been playing Gentry High at S.V. Marshall High School in Lexington.

Authorities are still searching for the suspects in connection with incident. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is helping with the case.

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - Terrifying moments for a group gathered in North Philadelphia as a gunman took aim and fired into a crowd, hitting seven people.

The shooting started at the corner of North 11th and West Cumberland streets, near a park, early Saturday morning, around 3:30, officials said. Two males had a dispute earlier in the night during a party at the location and people then began to leave. Within a short time, according to authorities, the shooter came back to the gathering with a weapon.

This is when the gunman fired over 50 shots into the crowd still gathered. When he was finished, seven people were injured, including a 16-year-old girl shot in the chest.

As the gunfire started, those gathered ran to a residence on the 2500 block of North Jessup Street as the gunman pursued them to that location, firing off at least one round.

Officials say a 7th victim was found at a third location, North 22nd and West Susquehanna. That victim was suffering from a gunshot wound in the back.

All of the victims were taken to Temple University Hospital. Police took three victims, while medics took another three and one arrived in a private vehicle. The 16-year-old girl is listed in critical condition, while the others are listed as stable.

Police say that private surveillance video captured the violence, as well as Real-Time Crime cameras. Investigators believe the gunman may be a juvenile. They are actively pursuing the individual and searching for a motive.
