MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 24-year-old Minneapolis man who was convicted of kidnapping and raping a woman in 2017 has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Deonte Lawson was found guilty of two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of kidnapping.

According to the criminal complaint, a young woman was retrieving something from the trunk of her car on the night of Oct. 15, 2017, or the morning of Oct. 16 in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis when Lawson, Darius Freeman and Wayne Armstrong forced her into the car at gunpoint and took her credit cards.

Prosecutors say they took her to a secluded wooded area where they sexually assaulted her. She later told investigators she thought they were going to kill her.

The three suspects then drove her toward Washington County, but the woman reportedly convinced them to stop for gas in Scandia. There, she escaped and ran from the car to an apartment above the gas station where she awoke the residents by shouting for help. Eventually, the complaint says, the three suspects gave up searching for her and drove away.

"I am smarter, braver and stronger than Mr. Lawson ever counted on," the young woman wrote in her victim impact statement, which was read by a victim advocate at Tuesday's sentencing. "I am a survivor. And I know I am not his first victim, but I am going to make damn sure I am his last. Mr. Lawson is nothing more than a monster. I looked him in the eyes during my testimony and I saw the cold, evil, lifelessness I remember seeing in Oct. 2017."

Armstrong, who was 17 at the time of the crime, pleaded guilty and agreed to testify against Lawson. He was not called testify. He will be sentenced Friday as an adult and is expected to get 144 months in prison.

Freeman, who was 16 at the time, also pleaded guilty and did testify against Lawson. He is also expected to get 144 months when he is sentenced at the end of the month.

The DNA of Lawson, Armstrong and Freeman connected them to the crime.

About a year and a half after he and two teens forcibly kidnapped a woman outside her Uptown apartment and gang-raped her, Deonte Lawson is headed to prison and never getting out again.

The 24-year-old Minneapolis resident was sentenced on Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

According to a release from the Hennepin County attorney's office, the sentence is the result of a grand jury indictment that allows for a life sentence "for particularly heinous sex crimes or a pattern of sex crimes."

It's a fitting description for what happened to the victim the night of Oct. 15, 2017.

Charging documents say she was getting something out of the trunk of her car outside her apartment when three young men approached and forced her to get into the vehicle at gunpoint.

They drove to a White Castle for food — using her credit card to pay for it — while she was in the backseat, and then took her to a "secluded, wooded area," where she was forced to perform sex acts on the trio.

She was also held by two of them while the other raped her. Afterwards, they took her to a remote, rural area in Washington County, where she managed to convince them to stop for gas — and used this moment to escape.

The sentencing
At Thursday's sentencing, a victim advocate read the woman's impact statement, and it did not mince words about Lawson and the things he did that night.

She said that the defendant had taken away her "drive and outgoing personality" and replaced it with anxiety, post-traumatic stress syndrome and other physical and emotional scars."

“I am smarter, braver and stronger than Mr. Lawson ever counted on,” she wrote in the statement.

Do Better is an op-ed column by writer Lincoln Anthony Blades that
debunks fallacies regarding the politics of race, culture, and society �

When I look at President Donald Trump, I see a pot-bellied, 71-year-old
man with a doughy frame. But in 1968, when he was a 22-year-old
University of Pennsylvania graduate, Trump was a tall, fit athlete who
played football, tennis, and golf. His age and clean medical history
qualified Trump as a perfect candidate for the draft to serve in the
United States Army and fight in the Vietnam War, but he avoided combat
after receiving a 1-Y medical deferment, which he has said was due to
"bone spurs in his heels." More than half a million American men were
stationed in Vietnam by the end of that year, which was the bloodiest 12
months of the conflict. On the day of Trump's graduation from the
University of Pennsylvania, 40 Americans were killed in Vietnam,
according to The New York Times.

The son of Fred Trump, a wealthy New York real estate developer, Donald
Trump did what many other wealthy young men were allowed to do: He dodged
the draft. Between 1964 and 1972, a few months before the draft ended, he
received five deferments � in addition to his "bone spurs" claim, the
other four were based on his educational status. He received two
deferments while he attended Fordham University from 1964 to 1966, and
two more after transferring to the Wharton School at the University of
Pennsylvania.

As a draft dodger, Trump never knew the horrors of war, but in 1997, he
laughed when telling radio host Howard Stern that avoiding sexually
transmitted diseases was like his "personal Vietnam." "It is a dangerous
world out there. It�s scary, like Vietnam. Sort of like the Vietnam era,�
Trump said to Stern, discussing his sex life. "I feel like a great and
very brave soldier.�

Today, Trump struggles to recall the most basic facts about the medical
condition that was the basis for his final deferment. He doesn't remember
the name of the doctor who provided him with the note of proof and has
repeatedly failed to provide a copy of it to The New York Times. He's
also forgotten which of his heels had the spurs, now just claiming it was
both. (During the 2016 presidential election, the affliction wasn't noted
by Dr. Harold Bornstein, a physician who performed a physical on Trump
and found that he had "no significant medical problems." in his medical
history)

Unlike the 2,709,918 soldiers who fought in Vietnam, Trump never served.
He wasn't injured like the 304,000 Americans who fought in the war, or
among the more than 58,000 killed in combat. Despite this inexperience,
he is now in charge of the U.S. armed forces, the Army, the Navy, the Air
Force, the Coast Guard, and the Marine Corps as commander-in-chief. As
president, he is tasked with dictating to all military generals and
admirals which battles should be fought, where they should be fought, and
who gets to fight in them on behalf of the United States.

He is certainly not the first American leader to receive draft
deferments. Former vice president Joe Biden received five student
deferments, former VP Dick Cheney received five deferments, and former
president Bill Clinton received deferments and even penned a letter to an
ROTC officer thanking him for "saving me from the draft." (It should also
be noted that before Clinton's administration, LGBTQ servicemen and women
were banned from serving. In his time, the military's "don't ask, don't
tell" policy began, which forced them to conceal their identities or risk
being discharged, effectively condoning discrimination.) This column will
afford these men no absolution for their decisions, but what makes
Trump's behavior obscene is that despite having never served, he has
fashioned himself as the arbiter of military courage.

It was Trump who, as a presidential candidate in July 2015, dissed
Senator John McCain, a former prisoner of war for roughly five and a half
years during Vietnam, by stating, "I like people who weren't captured."
He publicly disrespected Khizr Muazzam Khan and Ghazala Khan, the gold-
star Pakistani-American parents of Army captain Humayun Khan, who was
killed in combat in 2004 and posthumously awarded a Purple Heart for his
bravery. Not only did Trump attack an immigrant family who made a
sacrifice for their adopted nation, but he even compared their loss to
the "sacrifices" he made while becoming a real estate tycoon. To insult
the family of Khan, who died at war at 27 � just two years older than
Trump was when he received his 4-F classification, permanently
disqualifying him from military service � by comparing it to his own
business ventures is a claim only made equatable in the mind of a man
with little recognition of his own internalized cowardice.

Now the president, the five-time draft dodger, is weakening the military
to satisfy his own bigotry.

On July 26, he announced via Twitter that transgender soldiers would no
longer be allowed to fight for their country, essentially promising to
ban transgender people from serving. Reneging on a past campaign promise
to support the LGBTQ community, he announced that he will reinstate a ban
that was lifted by the Obama administration just a year prior, citing
"military costs and disruption that transgender in the military would
entail."

Twelve years ago, George Allen Walker knocked on the door of a St. Paul home and forced his way inside when a 17-year-old girl opened it. Then he choked her, pushed her into a bedroom and raped her.

On Thursday, less than a month after his release from prison, he did the same thing to another woman in downtown St. Paul, according to charges filed against him Friday in Ramsey County District Court.

This time, Walker knocked on the door of an apartment on Sibley Street around 6 p.m. and asked the woman who answered if “Michelle” was home, charges say.

The woman told him no and closed the door. Five minutes later, she heard another knock and again found Walker standing outside her door, the woman told police.

This time he asked to use her phone. When she offered to place the call for him instead, he pushed his way inside her apartment, the complaint said.

The woman screamed as he shoved her into the kitchen, and briefly broke free from his grip, but Walker chased her, putting her in a chokehold as he took the phone from her hands saying, “You’re not calling anyone,” charges say.

The woman was holding her small dog at the time, and Walker forced her to place the animal in her dryer before leading her into her bedroom and raping her, the woman told police.

Afterward, he made her clean herself off in the shower and then directed her to stand in a closet until she heard her door close, the complaint said.

After he left, the woman discovered that her purse and cellphone were missing. She contacted her daughter, who took her to the St. Paul police department to report the crime.

Officers used the GPS tracking device on the woman’s phone to find Walker, who was staying at a treatment facility in the 900 block of Marion Street in St. Paul.

Police went to the facility and first spoke with other residents there. They told officers that the group had gone to the YMCA at Sixth and Sibley streets in Lowertown that night. While most of the residents played basketball, Walker said he would be in another area of the gym lifting weights, according to the complaint.

The group didn’t see Walker again for most of the time they were there, the complaint said.

Police questioned Walker, who initially said he was at the YMCA all evening and denied having any interaction with the woman. He later admitted going to the woman’s apartment and raping her, telling officers his actions were fueled by anger when the woman wouldn’t let him use her phone, the complaint said.

Her purse and phone were reportedly found in his room.

Walker is expected to make his first appearance on the charges Monday morning. No attorney was listed for him in court records.

ST. CLOUD -- A St. Cloud man has been charged with raping a woman after she asked him for a ride to the store.

Thirty-three-year-old Abdirashid Yusuf is charged with 1st-degree criminal sexual conduct.

At around 9:45 p.m. last Thursday, St. Cloud police were called to a harassment complaint at a home in the 2900 block of Main Prairie Road.

According to the criminal complaint, the victim said she knew Yusuf for about three weeks and asked him for a ride to the store because she did not have a license. The victim said when Yusuf came to her apartment he began flirting with her, and at one point, tried to kiss her. When she asked Yusuf to leave, he stood in the door way and took off his clothes.

Court records show Yusuf then tripped the victim to the ground, held her hands above her head, pulled her pants down and raped her.

Records show shortly after Yusuf left, another man, who the victim believed to be Yusuf's brother, came to her door and gave her $500 saying he didn't want anyone to find out. The victim threw the money back saying she didn't want it. Yusuf later returned to apologize and said it would not happen again.

The victim then called police and was taken to St. Cloud hospital for her injuries.

Yusuf's next court appearance is on December 11th.

At age 10, she was prostituted by her mother in St. Paul. At age 12, one of her “customers” got her pregnant.

And it was the aborted fetus from that pregnancy that helped lead police to Walter Raymond Barbour.

Barbour, 47, pleaded guilty Wednesday, March 28, in Ramsey County District Court to first-degree criminal sexual conduct in the girl’s rape in 2002.

The girl said Barbour told her that if she didn’t have sex with him, he would call the police and have her taken away from her mother, the criminal complaint said.

He admitted Wednesday that he made that threat. He also said he plied her with drugs. Her mother had traded the girl’s services for drugs and money, and the girl became addicted to crack cocaine herself.

Barbour will receive at least 12 years in prison at his sentencing, scheduled for May 16 in front of Judge Gary Bastian.

In questioning Wednesday by prosecutor Sarah Cory, Barbour admitted he had sexual intercourse with the girl more than once.

A criminal complaint in the case alleged that the crimes occurred at least 20 times.

Barbour said the assaults took place in the mother’s home on Charles Avenue in St. Paul in March and April of 2002.

The Pioneer Press does not generally identify victims of sexual abuse. The newspaper is not naming the mother in this case because the girl could be identified through her.

Barbour said he knew the girl’s mother as a prostitute.

Asked if he knew the results of a state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension test that compared his DNA with the tissue taken during the abortion, Barbour said it revealed “that I was the father of the fetus that was aborted.”

The complaint said the girl’s pregnancy, confirmed at a medical appointment in May 2002, was reported to police.

The girl told investigators she did not know who the father was. Police obtained a sample of the fetal tissue from the June 2002 abortion and sent it to the BCA.

In October of that year, police learned that the child had been prostituted by her mother for the previous two years.

Seven years went by.

In July 2009, the BCA told St. Paul police that it had found a match between the fetal tissue and a convicted offender being held in Missouri.

It was Barbour.

St. Paul police found the girl last October, more than two years later.

She told them that she was prostituted more than 200 times and that Barbour was her mother’s pimp. She said he would bring men to her mother’s home, the complaint said.

Barbour had been released from federal custody in September 2011 and was living at a halfway house in Kansas. On Oct. 18, he was charged with raping the St. Paul girl.
