'FCC Commissioner Slams Kamala Harris’s $42 Billion Broadband
Initiative: ‘Not One Person, Home, or Business Connected in 3 Years!’'

<https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2024/09/fcc-commissioner-slams-kamala-harriss-42-billion-broadband/>

'Federal Communications Commissioner Brendan Carr slams Kamala Harris’s
$42 billion broadband initiative, calling it a colossal failure in a
scathing testimony before the House Oversight and Accountability
Committee on Thursday.

Carr, the senior Republican on the Federal Communications Commission,
didn’t hold back, accusing the regime of prioritizing political agendas
over practical solutions for millions of Americans still lacking access
to high-speed internet.

“It’s been 1,039 days since Vice President Harris agreed to spearhead
this massive program, yet not a single person has been connected to the
internet. Not one home. Not one business. Not even a shovel has hit the
ground,” Carr declared in his opening statement.

“It gets worse—no infrastructure builds will even start until sometime
next year at the earliest, and in many cases, not until 2026. This makes
Vice President Harris’s $42 billion initiative the slowest-moving
federal broadband deployment program in recent history.”

The program, known as BEED (Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment),
was designed to extend internet access to millions of Americans in rural
and underserved communities.

But according to Carr, the initiative has been bogged down by
bureaucratic mismanagement and a focus on advancing a “wish list of
progressive policy goals” rather than delivering on its core mission.

“The $42 billion program led by Vice President Harris is being used to
push a climate change agenda, DEI requirements, price controls,
preferences for government-run networks, and rules that will lead to
wasteful overbuilding. All of this will leave rural communities behind,”
he said.

The FCC commissioner pointed to the Biden administration’s broader
failure to support rural America, citing the revocation of Starlink’s
commitment to provide internet to over 640,000 homes and businesses.

“Frankly, it would not be the only time the Biden-Harris administration
has left rural America behind. In 2020, the SEC secured a commitment
from Starlink to provide Internet to 640,000 homes and businesses for
about $1,300 per location in federal support.”

“But the government revoked that award last year after President Biden
gave agencies the green light to go after Musk. The administration is
now spending dollars on the penny to connect locations through its own
initiatives. Senator Cruz released a report identifying entire projects
where the administration is now spending over $100,000 per location for
Internet.”

The hearing served as a stark indictment of Vice President Harris’s
leadership on the issue, with Carr calling for a complete overhaul of
the broadband initiative.

“Absent major reforms, Vice President Harris’s $42 billion program is
wired to fail. It’s time to correct course, get rid of all the
extraneous political goals, and focus on quickly connecting Americans,”
Carr concluded.

And then there is the chargers across America boondoggle.

So $7.5 billion dollars to build 8 EV charging stations?
That's ~$1 billion dollars per charging station.

Democrats love tossing money at problems. The problem is the money is wasted and the problem still
remains.

NEW YORK (AP) — Sean “Diddy” Combs is staying locked up after a judge Wednesday rejected the hip-hop mogul’s proposal that he await his sex trafficking trial in the luxury of his Florida mansion instead of a grim Brooklyn federal jail.

U.S. District Judge Andrew L. Carter ruled that Combs’ plan — which included a $50 million bail offer, GPS monitoring and strict limitations on visitors — was “insufficient” to ensure the safety of the community and the integrity of his case.

Carter, agreeing with prosecutors who fought to keep Combs in jail, found that “no condition or set of conditions” governing his release could guard against the risk of him threatening or harming witnesses — a central charge in his case.

Combs’ lawyers were making their second attempt in as many days to spring him from the Metropolitan Detention Center, where he has been held since pleading not guilty Tuesday to charges he physically and sexually abused women for years.

Combs has been in federal custody since his arrest Monday night at a Manhattan hotel. A federal magistrate on Tuesday rejected Combs’ initial bail request. On Wednesday, he and his lawyers struck out with Carter, the judge who will preside over his trial.

Defense lawyer Marc Agnifilo says he will now ask the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn Carter’s ruling and release Combs. In the meantime, he wants Combs moved from the Brooklyn lockup, which has been plagued by rampant violence and horrific conditions, to a jail in New Jersey. Carter said decisions on placement are entirely up to the federal Bureau of Prisons.

“I’m not going to let him sit in that jail a day longer than he has to,” Agnifilo said to reporters outside the courtroom.

Combs looked at family members and tapped his heart several times as Wednesday’s hearing began, then sat stoically as he listened to arguments. Afterward, as federal agents led him away, his relatives somberly embraced and exchanged hand slaps.

Combs, 54, is accused in an indictment of using his “power and prestige” to induce female victims and male sex workers into drugged-up, elaborately produced sexual performances dubbed “Freak Offs” that Combs arranged, participated in and often recorded on video. The events would sometimes last days and Combs and victims would often receive IV fluids to recover, the indictment said.

The indictment alleges Combs coerced and abused women for years, with the help of a network of associates and employees, while using blackmail and violent acts including kidnapping, arson and physical beatings to keep victims from speaking out.

Arguing to keep Combs in jail, prosecutor Emily Johnson told Carter that the once-celebrated rapper has a long history of intimidating both accusers and witnesses to his alleged abuse. She cited text messages from women who said Combs forced them into “Freak Offs” and then threatened to leak videos of them engaging in sex acts.

Johnson said Combs’ defense team was “minimizing and horrifically understating” Combs’ propensity for violence, taking issue with his lawyer’s portrayal of a 2016 assault at a Los Angeles hotel as a lovers’ quarrel. Security video of the event, which only came to light in May, showed Combs hitting and kicking his then-girlfriend, the R&B singer Cassie, in a hotel hallway.

“What’s love got to do with that?” an incredulous Carter asked.

Johnson also seized on a text message from a woman who said Combs dragged her down a hallway by her hair. According to Johnson, the woman told the rapper: “I’m not a rag doll, I’m someone’s child.”

“There is a longstanding pattern of abuse here,” Johnson said.

Combs’ Florida house is on Star Island, a man-made dollop of land in Biscayne Bay near Miami Beach, reachable only by a causeway or boat. It is among the most expensive places to live in the United States. Combs’ request echoed that of a long line of wealthy defendants who have offered to post multimillion-dollar bails in exchange for home detention in luxurious surroundings.

If he had been granted bail, Combs would have been confined to his home, with visits restricted to family, property caretakers and friends who are not considered co-conspirators, his lawyers said. After prosecutors said they served a search warrant Tuesday on Combs’ private security chief, his lawyers offered to hire a new firm to monitor him and ensure he abided by the proposed agreement.

Carter was unmoved, questioning the plan as an “allegedly fool-proof system.”

Many allegations in Combs’ indictment parallel accusations in a November lawsuit filed by Cassie, whose legal name is Casandra Ventura. Combs settled the suit the next day, but its allegations have followed him since.

The AP does not typically name people who say they have been sexually abused unless they come forward publicly, as Ventura did.

Without naming Ventura but clearly referring to her, Agnifilo argued that the entire criminal case is an outgrowth of one long-term, troubled-but-consensual relationship that faltered amid infidelity. The “Freak Offs,” he contended, were an expansion of that relationship, and not coercive.

“The sex and the violence were totally separate and motivated by totally different things,” Agnifilo said, contending that Combs and Cassie brought sex workers into their relationship because “that was the way these two adults chose to be intimate.”

Prosecutors portrayed the scope as larger. They said they had interviewed more than 50 victims and witnesses.

Like many aging hip-hop figures, Bad Boy Records founder Combs had established a gentler public image. The father of seven was a respected businessman whose annual Hamptons “White Party” was once a must-have invitation for the jet-setting elite.

But prosecutors said he facilitated his crimes using the same companies, people and methods that vaulted him to power. They said they would prove the charges with financial and travel records, electronic communications and videos of the “Freak Offs.”

In March, authorities raided Combs’ Los Angeles and Florida homes, seizing drugs, videos and more than 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant, prosecutors said. They said agents also seized guns and ammunition, including three AR-15s with defaced serial numbers.

A conviction on every charge would require a mandatory 15 years in prison with the possibility of a life sentence.

This story has been edited to correct the spelling of Cassie’s legal first name: Casandra, not Cassandra.

Try researching the details of the program before whining, so as to
understand what, where, and why.

Here, the funds were sent to the individual States to decide what they
needed, where, etc…and for the States to issue the contracts for the
installs.

As such, it will take longer and have higher costs because of the old
“States Rights!” mantra…even if a State isn’t deliberately dragging their
feet, or finding the “right” donor for the contract award.

Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - Charges have been filed against two of the people who were arrested last Friday night as suspects in a shooting that wounded a Minneapolis police officer.

19-year-old Frederick Davis is charged with second-degree attempted murder while 20-year-old Nevaeh Page is accused of aiding an offender-accomplice after the fact. The Minneapolis man and Brooklyn Park woman are scheduled to be formally arraigned on the charges tomorrow. Preliminary bail for Page has been set at $100,000, while Davis is being held on $1 million bail.

Hennepin County Sheriff's Office photo

According to the criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County Court, Davis has been identified as the alleged gunman who opened fire on an unmarked police car shortly after 9 PM on Friday. The court document says the officer in the police vehicle was following a vehicle that had been reported stolen and was associated with an earlier robbery. It had also been involved in previous chases with police in Minneapolis and Brooklyn Park.

The charges say the officer did not attempt to stop the vehicle and was tracking it when he crested the hill and spotted the vehicle parked along the curb of the road. The officer reported that's when he heard gunshots and saw muzzle flashes before he felt his arm go numb and realized he had been shot. The officer then sped away and called for help.

Tonight a 7-year veteran of the MPD assigned to 4th Precinct CRT was shot in the line of duty. Personnel from MPD, our local LE partners, and many from nearby agencies gathered at NMMC in solidarity to show support and honor our officer once he was discharged from the hospital. pic.twitter.com/EUI8p9q69O

— Minneapolis Police (@MinneapolisPD) August 12, 2023
While he was being transported to the hospital for treatment, responding officers located the vehicle and pursued it for about eight minutes before the driver crashed and two of the four occupants fled on foot. They were later identified as Davis and Page after they were tracked down by a K9 and apprehended in a nearby yard. Minneapolis police reported that an adult male and a juvenile male were taken into custody at the site of the crash.

The criminal complaint alleges Davis was driving the vehicle and Page was in the front passenger seat. The court document says a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a so-called "ghost gun" on the floor in front of the back seat and a 9 mm pistol that had been converted into a fully automatic machine gun was found on the floorboard where Davis had been sitting.

The court record also states that a preliminary review suggests the fully automatic handgun had fired 12 shots and the Ghost gun had fired three bullets.

The officer wounded in the incident was discharged several hours after he was taken to the hospital and, at the last report, was recovering at home.

Not really: incompetent and/or corrupt politicians are found in both
parties, even if they're more prevalent in the GOP thanks to Trump, but
a big part here is the Fed funding structure going through the State
bureaucracies always adds time. Being a new program also adds to this,
because the receiving State has to figure out which office (new office?
etc) it goes to ... before actually doing the work of figuring out what
they want and going through contracting.

I don't know how long this "its new" part takes - it will vary State by
State anyway, and depend on political attention (motivation to act).

For just the contracting part I've written government contracts and our
general rule of thumb was that for a "Full & Open", if you hustled, from
the time you got the money to the procurement group until they would
issue a contract was ~1 year.

After that year had passed, the contractor actually starts their work.
If its something fairly simple and doesn't need new permits, plan for
another 6 months before there's a First Article test, etc.

Now there are ways to get around some of this leadtime. One is to start
working on the paperwork before the money showed up. Easy to say, but
how do you get paid before there's funding? This typically requires
specific management approval to do (eg "Short of Award") and local
policies vary on how much leadtime you're allowed to do here - one
office I've worked in only allowed 3 months. Another cheat is to find
an existing contract rather than to have to go Full & Open, such as
writing a modification onto an existing contract. Some groups now write
Task Order contracts which leave the actual work part blank when they're
competitively bid. The trick here is that these have legal boundaries
on what type of work they can cover, and your project's scope needs to
fit without those boundaries in order to use the Task Order contract.

Getting back to this program for EV chargers, its a new program, a five
year one, and goes through the States, so its planners know its going to
take quite a bit of time upfront to get started.

To use an analogy, its like expecting a woman to give birth to a baby at
the 3-4 month mark instead of at the normal 9 months: for any EV
chargers up & running today is very fast and probably had some other
shortcuts, like 'shovel ready' projects just awaiting funding. Here,
this also included it being a small, motivated State, so there was less
political infighting/etc to decide what State office was going to get
the new work added to their existing projects.

It's going to be great when he faces justice,
is locked up and finally shuts the fuck up for good.

There's room in Gitmo, but another suitable option would be to go
refurbish Dr Mudd's accommodations at Fort Jefferson. /s

Good essay... and an accurate one.

I am old enough to remember being on ARPANET at my university and
reading articles about "The Information Super Highway"... even typing
that phrase is piquant! As I recall, that idea entered our vocabulary
somewhere around 1988 or so. We were in the period of steep growth
and great public interest throughout the '90s; however, that interest
(public and, consequently, political) has since attenuated.

“It’s been 1,039 days since Vice President Harris agreed to spearhead
this massive program... " Poof! That's two years and... where's my
calculator? ... less than three years, anyway. That's *nothing*!

I don't recall anyone saying that it's the Donald's fault; however, I
didn't ever see him doing much for anyone who wasn't able to return a
favor, and these "under served" communities are thus for a reason:
they lack political clout.

If we're going to use 1,039 days as our rubric by which to cut off a
program, then why are we still discussing that "border wall" thing?

DULUTH, Minn.- The search is on for two suspects Tuesday – one a well-known Duluth boxer — who police say were involved in return gunfire following this past weekend’s fatal shooting downtown.

“There was a shooting and the tragic death of Juamada,” said Duluth Police Chief Mike Tusken. “And then as the suspect is fleeing we believe that there was one or maybe two other shooters that were shooting at the fleeing suspect.”

Tusken spoke out at a press conference Tuesday, about the city’s first homicide of the year that took the life of Juamada Anderson Junior, 22, of Duluth on Saturday.

“Ultimately if you’re trying to use gunfire to resolve conflict, you’re going to have people injured and you’re going to have people that are unfortunately going to die,” the Chief said.

Patrick Battees Junior, 17, of Proctor is behind bars, charged with second degree murder after police say he shot Anderson in the head.

“This particular incident where we were responding and then immediately being told direction of flight that we were immediately responding to, and then ultimately, were able to make the arrest — that was absolutely critically invaluable to the success of this investigation,” said Tusken.

Now, two more suspects are charged with returning fire at the 17-year-old.

Investigators say surveillance video shows Markus Morris, 31 — a former junior welter-weight boxing champion from Duluth — shooting back at Battees two times, shortly after the initial shooting on the 100 block of East Third Street.

According to the criminal complaint, Morris then handed the weapon to Laurel Ladd Junior, 25. He’s charged with aiding Morris in the return gunfire.

“So this investigation there are multiple different cameras that were able to access video that showed the events of what happened,” Chief Tusken said.

According to Tusken, the shooting death of Anderson and the gunfire that followed — the 14th shooting incident of 2021 — are both tragic examples of increased gun violence in Duluth.

After last year’s record 41 shooting incidents, all non fatal, he asks for the community’s help in taking guns off Duluth streets and out of the hands of the city’s young people.

“The saying that it takes a village, right?,” Tusken said.

“Listen we have extraordinary youth centers in this city, from NYS to YMCA, to the Boys and Girls clubs to the Gary Rec Center,” said the Chief. “There’s a little things that we can do, but there’s a lot the community has to come together and we’ve got to be really our young people’s guardians.”

Morris’ weapon has not been recovered as of Tuesday, according to the complaint.Fsg Shooting Suspects 4web

The weapon believed to be used by Battees in the homicide was recovered.

Being a felon, Morris could face up to 15 years in prison for possessing a firearm. Ladd could face up to 10 years in prison for the charge of aiding and offender.

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Duluth Police Department by calling 911 or by submitting an anonymous tip on the city’s website.

He fathered two children by one of his daughters.

A father who tortured, starved and raped his twin daughters has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty in court this week.

Jerry Curry, 52, was charged last year with inflicting horrific crimes on his daughters, both of whom have developmental disabilities and are now in their 20s.

One of the daughters told police that Curry had fathered two children by her in June 2014 and October 2017 after regularly raping her, saying her sister was also sexually assaulted.

He also stomped on the head of the other daughter, who has a neurological/cognitive disorder with intellectual skills of a first to third grader, and the behavioral capacity of a 6-7 year old.

This attack left her blind in one eye, with little prospect of her sight ever being restored.

Curry would beat the pair repeatedly with bats and paddles on their arms, legs and heads, and chained them up for days at a time, sometimes without food.

Curry pleaded guilty in court this week to one count of first-degree sexual assault on Jan. 1, 2017, one count of first-degree assault – relating to the stomping attack – and one count of gross misdemeanor child endangerment.

This last charge related to a third daughter, who at the age of 10 witnessed the attacks Curry inflicted on her sisters over a two-year period.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman called it "one of the most revolting cases I have seen."

"We are happy that Mr. Curry agreed to plead guilty and accept a long prison term for his crimes," he added.

“That saved his victims from having to testify and relive the horrific times he put them through."

The mother of Curry's daughters, Shelia Wilson, was charged with criminal neglect, a felony, and is due to be sentenced on March 11 after pleading guilty Sept. 19.
