You are a true moron.

https://www.investopedia.com/articles/personal-finance/090415/cost-raising-child-america.asp

Raising a child can be an emotionally rewarding experience. But it can
also be very costly. Statistics from the Brookings Institution, an
economic think tank, show that the average middle-income family with two
children will spend $310,605 to raise a child born in 2015 up to age 17
in 2032.

This number represents a significant jump from the figure published by
the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which estimated the overall
cost to be $233,610 in 2017.

Key Takeaways
Middle-income parents will spend an average of $310,605 for a child born
in 2015 until they turn 17 in 2032.
The greatest expense associated with raising a child is housing.
The cost of childcare varies widely and depends on where a family lives.

Housing: 33% of Income
An expense associated with the cost of raising children is housing. This
can easily make up a sizable chunk of a parent’s budget, especially when
you factor in mortgage or rent payments, taxes, insurance, repairs,
utilities, maintenance, and household goods.

According to Consumer Expenditures Data for 2022 (the latest available),
the typical household spends $24,298 on housing per year.
3 Meanwhile, U.S. Census Bureau data shows that the median household
income in the United States was $74,580 in 2022 (the most recent data
available).
4

These numbers offer a broad idea of how much families pay for housing.
Costs vary depending on geographic area, type of dwelling, and family
size. Economic conditions can also influence the cost of housing for
families. Rising house prices make it more expensive for families to
purchase a home. Likewise, rising inflation can push up rental prices
and raise prices for consumer goods.

On its website the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
lists housing assistance programs that can supplement the cost of
housing for eligible lower-income families.
Food: 25% of Income
The amount a family spends on food is based on the number of children in
the home, household income, geographic region, and preferred diet. The
USDA issues monthly reports on food costs at four levels: thrifty,
low-cost, moderate-cost, and liberal. These reports consider different
household sizes with children of different ages.

The reference family consists of a male and a female adult ages 20 to 50
and two children in the six- to eight-year-old range and the nine- to
11-year-old range. Here’s how the average food spending numbers for the
reference family add up as of July 2024:
5 6

Thrifty plan: $980.60
Low-cost plan: $1,067.60
Moderate plan: $1,321
Liberal plan: $1,595
At the low end, a family of four spends about $11,800 per year on food
at home. At the high end, they spend more than $19,000 per year on food.
That’s around 25% of their income based on the median household income
of $74,580.
4

$310,605
The total cost to raise a child born in 2015 to age 17.
1

Childcare: 7% to 23% of Income
Childcare costs can easily eat up a sizable part of parents’ budgets
each year. How much families pay can depend on the type of care needed,
the number of children who need care, and where the family lives. In
2022, costs ranged from $5,357 for school-age home-based care in small
counties to $17,171 for infant center-based care in large counties.
7

Planning for College
The essential expenses don’t account for the cost of a college
education. Higher education can add to the total for parents who help
pay for their children’s college costs. How much parents pay for college
can depend on whether the child:

Attends a two- or four-year school
Goes to a public or private university
Is charged in-state or out-of-state tuition rates (at public universities)
The average annual cost (in-state) for the 2023-2024 academic year
totals $24,030 for a public college and $56,190 for a private college.
It includes the cost of tuition, fees, and room and board.

You didn't own a home to raise your children in????

I hate the so called average when their numbes are way out of line of
the prices around here. A good paying job is only around $ 40,000 to
50,000 a year.

I wonder if that price is just for food to eat or if it includes other
things from the grocery store like toilet paper and dish washing soap.
Just the wife and I now and the needed items other than food from the
grocery store add to probably 1/3 of the cost each week.

The numbers are like saying if you put your feet in liquid nitrogen and
a blow torch on your head you are in an average temperature f 70 deg.

What about clothes? Time spent driving for chores? A thousand and one other
things a wife does for the family while her husband is "working".

That's it exactly. Just like we all know it costs nothing and takes zero time
and effort to raise kids. You just hang them on hooks in the closet, stuff food
down their funnels once a day and hose them down whenever they stink.

LOL!

I think you need to stop gaslighting me. First you say you didn't have AC
because you didn't need it in your region, now you say you did and so did most
of your neighbors.

You bought a late Victorian with no heat in 1966? And then you remodeled the
kitchen, put some ac units in the windows and sold it for 18x what you paid for
it?

Who originally wired it because, you know, electricity went into only the finest
homes and really not until the Edwardian years. And who plumbed it? Did you
install flush toilets? Install showers or was all that there and that house is
still using century old plumbing and wiring?

Trump told a bunch of buddies at Mar-a-lago that he's going to give them tax
cuts at the same time he's telling working people they're making too much money.

Right you are!

Real inflation is far higher:

Think your savings are only losing 8% per year sitting in a bank
account? Think again. Inflation may actually be in the double digits.

Yes, I put a $139 window AC in the bedroom window for a couple of
months. That is far from a $10,000 central AC system.

No, I had central heat. I'm just saying that type of house is common in
older cities.

My mom knew a doctor who built a house in Ft Worth. In 1964 it was built for
76,000. Zillow shows it today at well over a million.

Ok. So what do you think are the main contributors to housing rising faster
than inflation?

It is hard to figure house prices due to the old thing of location,
location, location. I know a man that sold just a spot about 50 by 70
feet at Myrtle Beach for over half a million with nothing on it but a
slab of cement big enough to park 2 cars on. He bought it for almost
nothing probably 70 years ago. I have heard of stories of homes in
California being sold for millions and torn down to build another house
on. Other towns are just about giving away homes to get people to move
in instead of moving out.

After WWII, cheap stuff was made in Japan, as in the expression, Made in
Japan. But as time went on, wages got too high in Japan and they had to
off-short their manufacturing to the Phlipines, Indonesia, Taiwan, and
as wages got too high, they off-shored their manufacturing to Viet Nam,
Laos, Pakistan, etc.

50k is the low end of middle class. Below that is working class and then, the
poor.

The other day I had a craving for nuts so I spent the day with my wife and her
mother.

It's a really nice home in a good location. It's in a fashionable area midway
between town and the really nice mansions farther out. Has lots of coquina and
white brick walls, a private garden accessible only from the master which also
has a semi private deck. The fireplaces are enormous. I think the roof is
white pebbles on tar.

Image 7 is the entry way and iirc, it's big enough to shield a small car from a
hailstorm.

When it was new, they had a rectangular butcher block table in the eat in
kitchen that seated up to eight.

When was this? My best recollection is the Democrats fighting for tariffs and
quotas to protect Detroit while Reagan wanted free trade without quotas or
punitive tariffs. Ultimately, Reagan and the GOP had their way. Japan switched
from their focus on cheap econoboxes and began going after upmarket American
makes with larger cars and new brands like Lexus, Infinti and Acura.

This was not due to quotas. It was due to new rules preventing them from
"dumping". Japan had long engaged in the practice of shipping enormous numbers
of cars to the US to sell at, or near, loss prices. When the US stipulated that
models sold here could not be sold for less than in Japan, their makers shifted
up market.

You're right about Congress not foreseeing what would happen when they ended
dumping but I sure don't recall quotas being set. Do you have any reliable
cites for this?

Harris pointed out his former staff that doesn't support him, 40 of 44 Cabinet
