No, I did not add air. In that climate, central AC was not very common
or even doable in some houses. I remodeled the kitchen so it would
MAINTAIN value over the years. Normal maintenance and upkeep.

Did I make money on that home? No, I sold it at a higher price and put
that money into another house that also was inflated over time. Yes, it
allowed me to do that but you are missing the point.

If I had the same job in 2024 that I had in 1966 and had the same
salary, adjusted for inflation, I could not afford it today. My wage
would be 10x higher but the house would be 18x higher.

Real estate has gone up much more than wages over time and that makes
home buying more difficult.

The US has had it too good and easy for the last 50 or so years.
Growing up most homes had one TV and an outside antenna for free TV.

Now there are usually a TV for each person or more. Just the wife and I
here and we have 3 TV sets and a pay TV service for about $ 150 a month
.. That is around $ 1800 a year just to watch TV so in around 4 years
that TV wtching would be the $ 6000 .

Where I worked a number of people were let go due to low demand for the
product which is now made in other countries. Some were hired back by a
tempory service company at wages less than what they were making. I
asked one why he came back with reduced wages and benefits. He said
that even though making $ 3 less per hour it beats no dollars per hour.
That was about 20 years ago.

The fast food and other eating places are about to price theirselves out
of business especially if the wages are going up to the $ 20 range. NOw
the tips are expected to be 20 % and up instead of the older 10 % for
service.

My landscaping is $300/month.
Housekeeper is $200/month for light cleaning and no laundry.

No kitchen remodel last fifty years. The surfaces wear out, formica wears off,
bubbles and cracks and any kitchen remodel done in the sixties or seventies
would have been formica. Ever the best flooring doesn't last that long. Enamel
sinks and tubs go dull and stain. Plumbing doesn't last that long without
significant repair. Ditto wiring. Drawer sliders and hinges wear out and
cabinetry becomes coated with old cooking grease.

Nobody said anything about cable or extra services. We're talking about the
price of a TV. You're trying to roll in a bunch of extraneous fees. Get your
TV, get a digital antennae and enjoy your free, local broadcast TV. You'll
still pay 5% of the money for a superior device.

Precisely my point. Business wants to lower costs so that consumers will pay
lower prices. I recall many years ago going to a family reunion and hearing all
the talk about how Japanese cars and stuff built overseas was destroying
American jobs. There were Toyotas, Hondas and Nissans in the parking lot, a
Panasonic boom box played music and my Uncle had earlier in the day been
bragging about his 50 inch projection TV - by Sony.

This was in Philadelphia. My house was built in 1948, tens of
thousands of them were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. My
grandmother's house did not have central heat when built. Do you think
it would be simple to put AC in a house like that? Do they make coal
fired AC units? I had gas heat and I did use room AC units, as did most
of the neighbors.

I think you have to get out more and see what other types of houses are
around.

Back to my original premise. Wages increase 10X, real estate close to
20X make buying a house more difficult that it was 50 years ago.
