ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A bystander’s quick actions saved a woman and her baby from an attempted carjacking Friday morning in St. Louis County and a suspect is now behind bars facing felony charges.

St. Louis County prosecutors on Friday charged 32-year-old Nicholas Gamble, of St. Louis, with one count of vehicle hijacking, a class A felony. He is confined in the St. Louis County Justice Center on a $75,000 cash-only bond.

According to charging documents filed by St. Louis County Police, the victim was airing her tire around 9:08 a.m. at the QuikTrip convenience store at 702 Lemay Ferry Road when Gamble approached her. He then allegedly jumped in the driver’s seat and put the car in gear to drive off.

The victim, whose infant child was in the backseat, attempted to stop Gamble and he raised his fist in a threat to punch her, police said. Gamble then allegedly backed up to escape.

A bystander saw what was happening, rushed to the scene and pulled Gamble from the vehicle, according to charging documents. Police said another unidentified witness put the car in park to stop it.

The witness who pulled Gamble from the vehicle held him on the ground until police arrived and arrested the suspect. Police said the incident was captured on surveillance video.

An initial court appearance for Gamble has not been set.
