I know very well that speaking out about politics these days comes with risks. I can see
the 'shut up and whistle' tweets being fired off as we speak but I also knew as soon as I
was asked, that it was too important, as an American citizen, not to speak up in an
election of this magnitude.

I believe that leaders must display dignity, I believe that leaders must tell the truth, I
believe that leaders should be able to laugh at themselves, I believe leaders must care
for and love the people they are leading, I believe leaders must possess knowledge and
expertise, but with the full awareness that none of us has all the answers, and in fact

If you look for those qualities in your friends or your boss or an employee or your

Matthew McCaffery was the victim of a swatting incident after a cable news appearance. The Montgomery County Republican Committee is weighing disciplinary action against him.

The Montgomery County Republican Committee held a private disciplinary meeting Monday evening with Upper Merion GOP leader Matthew McCaffery.

His charge? Endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 general election and speaking out against former President Donald Trump.

“Once we start living in fear for words, that is a slippery slope,” said McCaffery, who expects a swift decision regarding his status within municipal party leadership. “It shouldn’t be condoned at any level.”

Christian Nascimento, Montco GOP chairman, told WHYY News the party bylaws are clear.

“If you want to be a Republican committee person, one of the few things that you have to do is support Republicans up and down the ticket. It’s pretty straightforward, and so disciplinary action happens when one member brings charges against another member for a violation of the bylaws,” Nascimento said.

He said McCaffery’s July op-ed in the Inquirer about “proudly voting for a Democrat” prompted another member to bring charges against him. The county committee is weighing a number of options, including removing McCaffery from his post. A decision is expected Tuesday.

“I kind of don’t care what people do personally or how they vote. I want them to vote for all the Republicans obviously, but there’s between who you want to vote for and then being a committee person and actively supporting someone that’s not on the Republican ticket,” Nascimento said.

Minneapolis police early Friday found the body of a man who was shot more than five hours earlier, officials said.

Officers were alerted after ShotSpotter technology detected gunfire about 2:25 a.m. in the area of N. 21st and Upton avenues, police said.

About 7:40 a.m., officers arrived a block over on Thomas Avenue and saw a man with a gunshot wound down in front of a home, according to police. Emergency responders declared him dead at the scene.

No arrests have been announced, and officials have yet to release the man's identity. The circumstances of the shooting remain under police investigation.

Minneapolis has also tallied multiple shootings this week with three or more victims.

On Sunday night, three people were shot, one fatally, in the 2500 block of Central Avenue NE., just north of Lowry Avenue, according to police. Christopher D. Thurmond, 32, of Maplewood was identified as the person who was killed.

On Monday night, gunfire left a woman dead and five people wounded on Franklin Avenue between 16th and 17th avenues S., police said. Police recovered a gun at the scene, but the only arrest so far was of a man who was obstructing law enforcement. The woman's identity has yet to be released.

On Wednesday night, three people were shot on Nicollet Mall downtown at 11:15 p.m. between 5th and 7th streets. They survived.

Police are asking for the public's help finding the people responsible for any of this week's shootings. Tips can be submitted to CrimeStoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477) or CrimeStoppersMN.org. All tips are anonymous, and anyone providing information leading to an arrest and conviction may be eligible for a reward.

There have been at least 39 homicides in the city so far this year, according to a Star Tribune database. That compares with 33 at this time last year.
