Of note is that within 1973, GEORGE PELL, who would later become a
prominent figure in the Catholic Church, lived in the parish house of
St. Alipius in Ballarat East alongside the paedophile priest GERALD
RIDSDALE. PELL has consistently maintained that he was unaware of
RIDSDALE’S abusive behaviour towards children. However, this claim has
been disputed, and the extent of PELL’S knowledge regarding RIDSDALE’S
actions became a significant focus during the royal commission’s
investigation into institutional responses to child sexual abuse. The
commission found that by 1973, PELL was not only aware of child sexual
abuse by clergy, but he had also considered measures to avoid situations
