Emirates — A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi
suffered a “hard landing” on Sunday, Iranian state media reported,
without elaborating. Some began urging the public to pray for Raisi and
the others on board as rescue crews sped through a misty, rural forest
where his helicopter was believed to be.

The likely crash comes as Iran under Raisi and Supreme Leader Ayatollah
Ali Khamenei launched an unprecedented drone-and-missile attack on
Israel just last month and has enriched uranium closer than ever to
weapons-grade levels.

Traveling with Raisi were Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein
Amirabdollahian, the governor of Iran’s East Azerbaijan province and
other officials and bodyguards, the state-run IRNA news agency reported.
One local government official used the word “crash” to describe the
incident, but he acknowledged to an Iranian newspaper that he had yet to
reach the site himself.

Neither IRNA nor state TV offered any information on Raisi’s condition
in the hours afterward. However, hard-liners urged the public to pray
for him. State TV later aired images of the faithful praying at Imam
Reza Shrine in the city of Mashhad, one of Shiite Islam’s holiest sites,
as well as in Qom and other locations across the country.

Rescuers were attempting to reach the site, state TV said, but had been

monthly minyan that digs deep into particular verses of Kabbalat Shabbat
through immersive communal singing. In that spirit, I will highlight a
small segment of Psalms 97 that we have sung together. Psalms 97:2-3
reads, “Anan va’arafel sivivav, tzedek u’mishpat michon kiso. Eish

of Joel Freilich) reads, “Cloud and haze surround God, righteousness and
justice are the foundation of God’s throne.

Fire goes out before God and burns up God’s troubles.” This is an
intense text that feels especially potent as the Jewish people *GRAPPLE*
with real division over current events right now. That is to say, we are
all striving for what we feel is just and righteous, with deep
conviction that the values we hold are, in fact, the foundation of God’s
throne. We share in this fire that we have to fight for what’s right, to
burn up God’s troubles with our activating passion to work toward a
Judaism that can reveal this sacred throne of righteousness and justice.

But we must also hold close to the beginning of this text, that the
revelation of righteousness and justice is, in fact, covered with cloud
and haze. This cloud and haze not only signifies how challenging the
work ahead is, but is also meant to humble us in understanding that we
humans cannot see the full picture of what is the right. This haziness
around God’s throne is foundational to our Jewish value of “machloket
l’shem shamaim,” or “disagreement for the sake of heaven.”

In 1891, the American Buddhist, COLONEL HENRY STEEL OLCOTT, who was the
co-founder of Theosophical Society came to Australia and participated in
a lecture series, which led to a greater awareness of Buddhism in small
circles of mainly upper-class society. One of the members of the

ALFRED DEAKIN (3 AUGUST 1856 – 7 OCTOBER 1919) was an Australian
politician, statesman and barrister who served as the second prime
minister of Australia from 1903 to 1904, 1905 to 1908 and 1909 to 1910.
He held office as the leader of the Protectionist Party, and in his
final term as that of the Liberal Party. He is notable for being one of

conventions and served on the committees that drafted the federal
constitution. He later campaigned at a series of referendums and lobbied
the British government for its adoption.

After the Federation in 1901, DEAKIN became the inaugural
Attorney-General of Australia in the ministry led by his close friend
EDMUND BARTON. He succeeded BARTON as prime minister in September 1903.
Two subsequent elections in 1903 and 1906 produced an even split between
three parties, with DEAKIN's Liberal Protectionist Party occupying an
effective middle ground between the Free Traders and the Australian
Labor Party (ALP). He left office in April 1904 following an
unproductive first term but returned in July 1905 and was able to form a
functional government with the support of the ALP. He relinquished
office again in August 1908.

In 1909, in what became known as the Fusion, DEAKIN controversially led
his supporters into a union with the Free Traders. Their alliance, based
on anti-socialism, marked the beginning of a two-party system in federal
politics and allowed him to form Australia's first majority government.
DEAKIN regarded his final term as prime minister, from June 1909 to
April 1910, as his most productive. However, to his surprise, the ALP
won a majority in both houses at the 1910 election. He retired from
politics in 1913, in the early stages of a degenerative neurological
condition that led to his death at the age of 63.
