The majority of people use MP3 players to while away the time. As I'm
far to unco-ordinated to do that I make do with whatever radio station
is being beamed out. Sighted people can also watch a couple of TV
screens with sub-titles.

I've been able to join one less than 10 minutes walk from home - all I
have to do is walk down my road, turn left, walk under a bridge, cross a
road - which is one way only - and then walk into the park where the gym
is. Unfortunately from my point of view I can't get any discounts from
using this gym as its in Reading's borough boundary, and I pay my tax to
Wokingham - but being Council run its cheap compared to a 'private' one.

Until I discovered I could join this particular gym I was in your
position too. An hour each way by bus - and/or a long walk at this end
to get to the second bus. I went to the building once by bus for a day
exhibition and I knew I'd never use the gym (I don't swim which is
another reason why a lot of gyms are a waste of money for me).

What's the chances of your GP lining you up for free gym exercise? I'm
not overweight enough (and probably not blind enough) to even think of
swinging this one but why not ask? I take it your association for the
blind isn't doing any exercise classes? It was thinking of taking up
yoga with our lot which made me realise that an hour each way on the bus
was never going to work - and even then I can only do it over certain
hours of the day because of the bus at this end of the journey (one per
hour which doesn't link into the other one at all times: hence a 20 min
walk each way).

One of my friends who's seriously overweight has been referred to a gym
for free under some scheme to get the overweight fit.

Somehow I imagine the sort of thing you're thinking of is the sort of
thing people would find in one of those up market catalogues for the
man/woman who has everything.
