When you hear the word "miracle," what comes to mind? I think about things
beyond the impossible happening. I had never witnessed or thought that a
miracle had occurred in my life -- until last summer.

Whenever I am depressed or lonely or just have some amazing news to share, I
call my other half and best friend, Alisha Danielle Cameron. I have known her
for 13 years; we became inseparable starting from age 4 when we met at
preschool.
I know Alisha so well that it's almost scary. We were around each other so much
that we sounded exactly the same. She is my other half; when I look at her, I
see me. I consider her my twin. We finish sentences for each other and even
know exactly what the other person is trying to say by not saying one word at
all. She has always been there to listen, and never gets tired of me even when
I repeat the same thing to her 10 times a day.

On Monday, June 21, 2010, I thought it was just going to be a regular day. I
decided to call Alisha for a chat. She told me, "I just went to the doctor for
a bad headache and I need to lie down and take the medicine he gave me, I'll
call you later." So I hung up the phone and continued my day as usual.

I didn't hear from her that night so the next morning I called her boyfriend.
He told me that she was rushed to the emergency room with what was a suspected
stroke the night before and was taken by helicopter to the University of Utah
for treatment. What, a STROKE? I thought that only old people got strokes! What
a nightmare ... it must be a mistake!

I later found out from my friend's family that the doctors told them that only
12 people a year have this kind of a stroke, and it was completely unexpected.
I thought I was having a terrible dream, but sadly it wasn't a dream. They
found out that Alisha's left jugular vein was too narrow and there was a blood
clot going from her forehead to her neck. They performed an immediate crucial
surgery and removed the clot.

I remember thinking to myself, "She is gone, and 13 years of our friendship is
lost. What if she can never speak or walk again?" I was completely crushed and
had little hope for Alisha even though I knew that my best friend and other
half was in one of the best hospitals in the nation. I love her so much and
just couldn't believe this had really happened.
