A new report indicates an antidepressant medication appears to help
individuals recover cognitive skills following a stroke. In the study,
patients who received the antidepressant escitalopram (Lexapro)
following a stroke appeared to recover more of their thinking,
learning and memory skills than those taking placebo or participating
in problem-solving therapy.

Antidepressants are believed to stimulate nerve cell growth.

The research is found in the February issue of Archives of General
Psychiatry, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Stroke is a major health care problem and is the third leading cause
of death in America behind heart disease and cancer. Strokes prevent
blood flow to parts of the brain, damaging brain tissue. Since the
brain controls all activity within the body, body functions are
impaired, at times dramatically.
