Target is pulling out of a planned store in downtown San Diego.
The retailer had signed a 15-year lease to go into the newly built
Radian apartment complex in East Village and the store was set to
open next year. Jason Wood, principal at developer Cisterra, said
Target informed them of the decision to pull out Friday with few
reasons given as to why.
Target has agreed to honor their lease and pay an annual sum that is
seven figures, Wood said, and has already repaid $600,000 to
Cisterra for the construction. San Diego Sun was the first to report
the news Thursday morning.
Target spokesman Jim Joice did not get into specifics as to why it
had decided to pull out.
“We routinely assess our current projects," he said in a statement,
"and have made the decision to no longer pursue a store in this
location. We continue to operate 27 stores in San Diego.”
