Gilded Age into a burgeoning modern era.

The year marked the end of World War I, a momentous time in U.S.
history, as soldiers returned home, and the city began to recover from
the war's economic impacts. On Fifth Avenue, parades in celebration of
the Armistice would have been a common sight, with crowds gathering to
honor the brave men who had served. This era also saw the rise of
automobiles, which were slowly replacing horse-drawn carriages,

iconic religious and cultural center. Further north, Central Park
provided a tranquil escape from the bustling streets. High society
families like the Vanderbilts and Astors once lived in palatial
mansions on the avenue, though many of these residences were being
replaced by commercial buildings by the late 1910s.
