I reloaded Linux on my laptop this week, as the laptop has been sitting
for about 2 years and I didn't feel like doing upgrades.

I ended up using Gnome, which I've avoided since v3 and I'm forcing
myself to get used to it. It's ok, but so far it's hard to find pref
options for things. Do they even exist? I probably just don't know where
to look.

What is your goal?

Why don't use another DE if you prefer it?

You can use gconf-editor.
https://help.gnome.org/admin//system-admin-guide/2.32/gconf-1.html.en

That said, GNOME is bloated and long dead to me. You might enjoy MATE,
Cinnamon,XFCE, or Gnustep. For the minimalist dwm with dmenu is nice and
you can configure agetty to log you in without a login manager. I would
also strongly recommend any distro without SystemD.

My DE of choice is KDE but I thought I'd give Gnome another chance. I'm
not impressed. I realize I can still install another DE :)

How is Devuan? I've not tried it.

Looks nice. I may give it a try when I get back home. Thanks for the
pointer!

I think some of the philosophy behind GNOME is that options confuse
users, so best to take them out and make it as simple as possible.

GNOME is not my cup of tea, which is a shame as I liked at a lot when I
first started Linux. But GNOME it seems is somewhat hostile to being
configurable.

Why force yourself to get used to something, when you can have something
else, which would be far more to your liking?

I tend to agree with that. Gnome seems to have gone the way of
tablets/phones and such device use. Not that that is a problem, it's not
not what I prefer on a desktop. On my phone? Sure, but Gnome appears to
be abandoning the desktop. This is just my opinion.

> Why force yourself to get used to something, when you can have something

It's a matter of just seeing what Gnome is all about. I installed it
unintentionally, as it's the default and I forgot to select KDE, or
install KDE during install, so just spending some time with Gnome while
traveling.

If it were my regular desktop, I would have switched it to KDE by now,
but it's just a laptop.
