It's my intention to switch my printing from an
HP Officejet 5610 to an Epson ET-4850.

What printer driver port needs to be installed?

How are you connecting to the printer? USB, RJ45,
wireless, or parallel printer port?

The current printer uses USB.
Apparently the new one expects wireless or Ethernet
(going by what's on the box,I have not unpacked).

It's installed,I assume it's doing the job
when allowed (the old printerscannercopierfax
insists that it has no paper, which appears to
be a hardware problem with paper detection).

If you're doing wireless, give the printer a static IP
address (assuming you're on a home network). You can
then use either lpd or cups to print. See the handbook
on how to set up the queues.

Wasn't planning to do wireless (my IP address block is
linked to a different upstream circuit than the wireless
hotspot).I see that the box does say "Hi-Speed USB" in
one place though "Wireless Ethernet" are emphasized.

I'd have been quite surprised if it didn't have USB so you should
be fine connecting with that. The emphasis on "Wireless" is just
marketing because so many users, home users especially just call
any and all forms of wireless connection "WiFi" these days and
marketing push that "convenience" of not having "old fashioned"
wires :-)

If you are using CUPS, it should "just work" simply by adding the
printer (or the nearest make/model you can find) from the web
interface.

If the printer is IPP compliant, the OP may be able:
# lpadmin -p myprinter -E -v ipp://myprinter.local/ipp/print -m everywhere

In any event,an attempt to install the
print/epson-inkjet-printer-escpr2
port
failed because it couldn't find the directory
/usr/ports/devel/cmake-core/work/cmake-3.29.3

(I have a
/usr/ports/devel/cmake-core/work/cmake-3.28.3
directory instead).

Is this a simple matter of upgrading cmake-core?
