Hello,

having searched for an answer of my question, but have found no hints: I
want to realize a critical edition for which I want to set some letters
in the Artificial Uncial. I use lualtex and fontspec, but get this
below. How can I solve this?

kind regards
Jens

I have no clue about LaTeX! But it looks like that specific error
message goes away after you drop "\usepackage[B1,T1]{fontenc}" under
the line "\documentclass{scrbook}". Still, there are a few more
error messages hanging around here . . . :-(

I'm always again surprised how many people nowadays ignore the
documentation of a package. I suggest that you do texdoc auncial and
then read section 2. (Put the fontenc command then before fontspec,
to avoid side-effects on the main text encoding.)

You mean lualatex?

Just typest by pdflatex using the preamble

\documentclass{scrbook}
\usepackage{auncial}
\usepackage[B1]{fontenc}

Maybe I should have mentioned, that indeed I have read the documentation
of auncial, and having tried to solve the problem alone in many ways like

\textuncl{text} or \aunclfamily{}, also having put the [B1]{fontenc}
package.

This would have given a bunch of MWEs. And yes, the files b1enc.def,
b1cmr.fd and TeXB1.enc are in my texlive directory too. But never mind:
I have realized the task with the package uncial (not the uncial A I
want but alas – I have to edit a Latin text.

PS: If you have one day a question about a Latin phrase or problem in
old Greek, feel free to ask me – I will certainly not insist that you
have to learn Latin first (on my level naturally).

I guess that if you insist on using lualatex instead of pdflatex, you
probably want to look carefully at references such as the following.
If nothing helps, I believe you can ask your question there as well.

Try the preamble

\usepackage{fontspec}
\setmainfont{oldstandard}
\usepackage[B1,TU]{fontenc}
\usepackage{auncial}
\usepackage{fonttable}

Then you (should) get "No file B1lmr.fd".

This file is not in the list you gave above.

Correct. I get this message.

> This file is not in the list you gave above.

This file isn't named in the documentation of auncial too. And yes, I
have to 'insist' in using LuaLaTeX, because slowly I get used to it.
Thanks for the links, which (as far as I could see) say, that
(technically) fontenc isn't necessary with fontspec. Having encounterd
the auncial exception (there will be many others I presume), I will rely
on the uncial-package.

Using auncial only for these four letters A.A.G.G. (a common
Abbreviatura) its not worth the trouble and the time – not yours, not mine.

(Windows folks, the next paragraph's your jam.
Linux gang, you'll want to chew on both of these nuggets.)

When you're in a pickle like that on Windows, firing up "Procmon"
can be a real lifesaver. Just filter for processes with "tex"
in the image name, and bam - you'll see exactly where the program's
sniffing around for files. Then it's a cinch to drop the file
right where it needs to be.

For the Linux crowd, you *might* be able to pull off something
similar by running "strace -ff -o textrace <texcommandline>".
That'll spit out some "textrace" files that *might* clue you
in, but I'm not gonna lie, I'm out of my depth on that one.
It's about as clear to me as the fog rolling into the Bay!

In that case I'd avoid the auncial package and reference the font via
fontspec direct, eg

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{fontspec}
\setmainfont{Old Standard}
\newfontface{\auncial}{auncl10.pfb}
[Path=/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/fonts/type1/public/auncial-new/]
\begin{document}
Test \auncial A.A.G.G.
\end{document}

Section 2 starts with

Thus, to use the font in a document you need to
at least have: \usepackage[B1,...]{fontenc} in the preamble.

So it is quite clear that this is a must, and if this didn't work
for you you should have shown a MWE *with* this line.

The B1-encoding misses a FontSubstitution declaration. You can
repair that like this

\documentclass{scrbook}

\DeclareFontEncoding{B1}{}{}
\DeclareFontSubstitution{B1}{cmr}{m}{n}
\usepackage[B1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{fontspec}
\setmainfont{oldstandard}
\usepackage{auncial}

\begin{document}

some text
{\aunclfamily AAGG}
some text

\end{document}

Well, people like to be helpful in general, and if you ask
somebody for help it's a bit contradictory to discourage him.

The solution proposed by Ulrike (12:31) works perfectly well.

Thank you – it works fine – in the MWE; when I paste your solution in my
Master File, lualatex is complaining an "undefined controll sequence
\aunclfamily"; this is maybe some conflict with other packages I doesn't
get and I am a bit tired now of this problem.

For now, I use \textuncl{} and come back to this problem soon.

Thank all of you for the help!

This sounds like some kind of grouping problem. Can you try using
{\usefont{B1}{auncl}{m}{n} AAGG} instead of {\aunclfamily AAGG} ?

I have put Ulrikes working solution in the preamble and also the auncial
OR the allauncl package (both of them work fine):

\DeclareFontEncoding{B1}{}{}
\DeclareFontSubstitution{B1}{cmr}{m}{n}
\usepackage[B1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{fontspec}
\setmainfont[Ligatures=TeX]{OldStandard-Regular}
\setmonofont{OldStandard}
\setsansfont{OldStandard}
\usepackage{allauncl}

In the text I have put all the variants

\textuncl{AAGG}
{\usefont{B1}{auncl}{m}{n} AAGG}
{\aunclfamily AAGG}

The first works fine (beside the fact, that the A is an rounded A.
The second:

(/usr/local/texlive/2024/texmf-dist/tex/latex/bookhands/ot1uncl.fd)
! LaTeX Error: Encoding scheme `B1' unknown.

l.672 {\usefont{B1}{auncl}{m}{n}
AAGG}?

The third:
LaTeX Font Warning: Font shape `TU/auncl/m/n' undefined
(Font) using `TU/lmr/m/n' instead on input line 672.

(/usr/local/texlive/2024/texmf-dist/tex/latex/microtype/mt-LatinModernRoman.cfg
) ! Undefined control sequence.
l.673 {\aunclfamily
AAGG}
?

I am completely lost with this.

No they don't. auncial is more or less ok with lualatex if you need
it for a small number of letters, but allauncl should not be used
with lualatex.

Solution: I had to delete the .aux file, than everything runs smooth as
silk – beside some formatting problems in the headlines and in the
tableofcontents – but this I can (hopefully) solve myself.

Thanks to all of you (especially Ulrike)
