Because, as Lewis already told you, you cannot disable sleep when
battery power, since battery power is naturally limited. Do you not
understand that battery power is not limitless?

I started up a vim session and then got the PID of it. Then I did

caffeinate -w <PID>

I left the laptop alone for 20m (double the 10m setting) and when I came
back it had not gone to sleep.

I ran caffeinate (without any parameters) in Terminal as shown in its man:
"DESCRIPTION
caffeinate creates assertions to alter system sleep behavior. If no
assertion flags are specified, caffeinate creates an assertion to prevent
idle sleep..."

Basically, I don't want MBP to sleep.
