//I was recently having some problems with iTunes, and decided to
reinstall macOS Sierra. I held Command+R on startup and clicked on
"Reinstall macOS" without erasing the hard drive in Disk Utility. Once
the reinstall was complete, I started back up and all of my files and
programs were still there, along with my settings, desktop wallpaper,
and everything else. (The iTunes problems were fixed.)//

What exactly does this "Reinstall" feature do, if it doesn't remove
programs and change settings to default?//

DB probably wrote it. All he does is post links to his old questions, in a
desperate attempt to get more replies to his ancient questions.

How did you make two posts at the same time? (2206)

FWIW - BDB did *NOT* ask the question on Stack Exchange.

This part of macOS has NOT changed at all. How many folk realise that
reinstalling the macOS will NOT eradicate any previously installed malware?

One post was a single line.
The other was 2 characters ie:+1
I did break a nail on the second one though.

Anyone who has a clue re what they are doing around computers.

See, if you understood what an OS was and what isn't part of the OS
(like the personal info you state is still present), what part of it
don't you understand?

If you replace the water feature in your back garden, did you expect all
the weeds to disappear as well?

Probably not many.
Fair point.
Even a low level format in the Windows world does not guarantee the removal of ALL malware.
Probably 95+ percent of malware but not 100%
I'm pretty sure gremlin, APD, FTR, Kelli, ME or others can give a more comprehensive answer.

Anyone but snit in fact.
Snit's idea of malware is wearing blue high heel pumps with a red clutch.

A fellow called 'Gremlin' used to post DOZENS of posts which all showed
the same time, so there must be a procedure for so doing.

You have NEVER caught me telling a lie.

'In the old days' reinstalling a computer's operating system used to
wipe away ALL data stored on one's hard drive so that one started afresh.

This does NOT happen on a Mac.

Who knew?

Did you?

Thank you for your sensible answer, 'Pothead'.

Snit won't like me saying so .....

Read 'pothead's reply'. He said ....

Probably not many.
Fair point.
Even a low level format in the Windows world does not guarantee the
removal of ALL malware.
Probably 95+ percent of malware but not 100%

I completely agree with him.

I'm pretty sure 'time' has nothing to do with that.

It wouldn't happen in many instances (and never had).

Anyone who had an idea about computers.

Yes.

Many OSs even warn you that a reinstall will or won't wipe user data /
everything and / or allow you to choose which.

You sound very much like my Dad in this as he also knew fuck all about
computers. He was allowed to buy and use a later version of OSX and then
was surprised when half his apps no longer worked, something anyone who
'knew their stuff' would have already known (or who had read the
installation instructions).

Over the many years I was building, upgrading and maintaining computers
for many people it was interesting to learn the number of people who
suggested they were 'computer literate' who were actually only 'familiar
with MS Word' etc.

Ask them to send you a Word document and they would do it from Word (or
whatever), rather than picking it up via the F/S directly.

Did you say you *have* still got the box for that Mac?

Cheers, T i m

You should remember that the procedure is "wipe and reinstall" not just
"reinstall" when malware is the problem.

Actually, FTR, I've never forgotten that it is essential to erase my
hard drive if I want to eradicate malware.

Thank you for helping to clarify matters though. :-)

Will you, please, explain exactly how one can do that?

Thanks, if you will.

Most of what I need is held in my iCloud!

I do run Time Machine too though!

I see. I've never tried to do that. It seems to be against the spirit of
Usenet.

or type really really fast.

That's what 'pothead' says he did! ;-)

Btw .....

Some weeks ago I suggested to Tim Davies that he try to speak more
slowly in his YouTube videos.

His response to me?

//People ask me to change the whole time but none of them have a Youtube
channel and have no idea of what it takes to constantly put out videos,
it's not easy but I'm not changing for people - it's who I am, you'll
just have to listen faster.//

*Listen faster*!

I really liked that! 🙂
