Finally, we get to choose more defaults outside the Walled Garden! Here
is one that has happened recently for me but not picked up in recent
articles on v.18.2.

The other day I asked Siri for directions via CarPlay by saying "Drive
to (place) using Google Maps". Since then Siri defaults to Google Maps
whereas Apple maps was the default unless you asked for Google Maps
again. Today I also asked for directions to a nearest (brand name) store
location from with a brand's app. I was give a choice of Apple or Google
Maps. Apps defaulted to Apple maps before this Siri change, no choice
offered.

Brick by brick the Wall Garden is coming down. Apple will be better for it.

Apple creates something that works so well for so many people...

....that big government wants them to destroy it.

LOL! Opening up the platform makes it more appealing. You still have the
Apple defaults.

That's a business's decision to make, isn't it?

That's a nonsense reply. It's a business's decision if Apple's terms
permit a decision. Like, for instance, as an Apple app owner do I want
to use the Apple Store to complete a purchase or fulfill it myself
through a third party? Big brick in the wall, that is not permitted.

Back to your point that it works well for a lot of people, how does that
change if you stick to default Apple apps?

Next up, Apple is going to see a major EU fine if they don't open up
in-app purchase options. One small step in that direction has happened.
We use Kindle Unlimited a bit. Those books are included in the Unlimited
subscription. Until recently on iOS you had to get your Unlimited books
from the Amazon site, not the Amazon app, even though the subscription
covers the cost. Now you can select and load on the Kindle app an
Unlimited book right off the app. That was very inconvenient, and might
push someone to use Apple's Books app. A very small garden wall brick gone.

If the EU succeeds in opening up lower cost in-app purchases consummated
outside the app Apple has a business decision to make. Like maybe lower
their cut of in-app purchases to something reflecting their cost instead
of the monopolistic rates they can charge now by not allowing purchase
completion until they get their cut.

Are you really this stupid?

Your last argument was "Apple will be better for it".

Think about that...

....if thinking is something you actually do.

Better, as in not as monopolistic. If they don't change the U.S. and EU
are going to bring the company down.

So by that logic (extended), it would be better for you to give me all
your money...

LOL. You have bragged about Apple being the only company making much
money on smartphones then in denial about why that is true.

How is that relevant to what we're discussing?

You're suggesting something will make Apple "better"...

....because they won't be subject to fines.

Well, duh!

That's an incredibly low and stupid bar.

It will make Apple better because it will enable choices we do not have
now. For example, why can't I specify Google Maps as the default
navigation app and delete Apple Maps? Why can't I dump brain-dead Siri
for Google Assistant? Why can't I have a payment app different from
Apple Wallet? Why can't I use a different application's storefront for
in-app purchases? Why does Apple not allow out-of-app payments at all?

Simple, Apple makes money off it's sole-source options. That is what
this is all about. That's called monopoly power. If Apple does not open
up it may be forced to spin off parts of the company and will certainly
be subject to additional fines.

Because Apple designed an entire product and you get to decide whether
or not to buy it.

It's funny how quickly you supposed free market fanatics want to abandon
it...

....when you think it's good for YOU.

LOL. You probably think breaking up AT&T and forcing Microsoft to make
it easier to select a non-IE default browser were bad ideas too.

I see the day coming that Apple is forced to either spin off the App
Store or give other app sources and in-app purchase options full and
equal access to outside app and out-of-app payments access. Also the
option to specify any app that has a non-Apple equivalent as the default.

It's my phone, not Apple's!

I think there is an identifiable difference between building an
operating system and after the internet had become a thing, tying one's
browser choice to it.
