Once a year (at least) I go through my collection of old PCs (and
other devices), fire them up, make sure they're still running, update
software as necessary (or possible. There's not a lot you can do with
a Win95 machine with regards to updates these days ;-) and generally
make sure my collection of obsolete junk isn't actually, irredeemably
junk. It's time consuming and repetitive but (for certain types of
strange personalities, at least) fun work.

A lot of my older PCs, I don't really have much use for; I keep them
around for the nostalgic joy they bring me. That old 1997 IBM Lenovo
laptop is never going to be my main computer, but it's fun to use and
is surprisingly responsive. Less so that ancient Dell Inspiron, that I
keep around mostly because it is the sole archive of my ancient iTunes
library that I'm too lazy to transfer.

Still, it occurs to me that maybe its time to cull the herd. But its
so hard to choose which computer gets sent to the slaughter-house
(a.k.a., the parts bin). Not my cube-like i5-4670 desktop; I love its
chassis and hot-swappable hard-drives too much. The MacBook 3? No,
that's (nominally) just a loaner given to me so not really mine to
scrap (Admittedly, it was loaned to me ten years ago and I'm pretty
sure the owner has forgotten all about it, but still). The old Gateway
desktop? But how could I? That's the back-up to my back-up server!

Well, surely I could get rid of some of the mobile devices. That Palm
Pilot with the screen that doesn't respond to touch; that can go,
right? Oh, but I have such fond memories of using it as my MP3 player
and it takes up almost no room in the closet; keeping it would make
almost no difference. Maybe my first cell-phone... except it's a
flip-phone Motorola; they don't make the like anymore! It's
practically a historical artifact at this point!

Well, those Tzumi Bluetooth headphones can definitely go. The battery
is dead, they never were comfortable, I've no use for bluephone
headphones anyway, and I've no nostalgic feeling whatsoever for the
device. It's just a shame they're buried so deep in storage. I'd
literally have to move furniture just to open the drawers where
they're stored. It all feels like too much effort.

Hmmm. This old plastic screw I just found at the bottom of the parts
bin is broken, and I don't know what it goes to anyway. I'll toss
that. Yeah. That's a good start. But for now, I'd better just put
everything away so it doesn't look all messy. You know, just until I'm
ready to really start getting rid of stuff. Tomorrow, maybe. Or next
week. Next month surely. Definitely by next January, when I have to
check all the PCs again. But it'll happen; count on it.

In the meantime, maybe I should get rid of some of my computer games?
;-)

Aren't some of those games the reason for keeping some of the old computers?

I've done good in this world. Now I'm tired and just want to be a cranky

Hey! Good point! And literally true; I built the WinXp and Win98SE
computer solely because some games from that era just don't run -or
don't run well- on modern operating systems and hardware.

And, of course, if I keep those computers because I have those games,
I obviously have to keep those games so I have something to RUN on
those computers!

I like this logic; it's so incredibly circular! Thank you! Six
Internet Points to you!

Never. I still have all of my games going back to the C-64 days. The
only games I ever owned and don't own anymore are my Atari 2600 games
but I am not upset over them. Well, ok, I miss Adventure a little bit.
That was my favorite game on the system.

I did, however, get rid of all the extra computers, monitors and other
assorted hardware crap I had lying around a number of years ago. I
still don't regret that decision. As Dimensional Traveler pointed out,
the games are the reason I kept those computers around. But then
DosBox came along and I decided those computers and all the hardware
for them weren't necessary anymore.

The only old hardware I still have and use are my Roland SCC-1 and
external midi modules.

My oldest working (computer/laptop/notebook)s from the colony and me:

Apple PowerBook G4 1 Ghz with MacOS X v10.2.8. I was playing Q3A and its
mods in it back then! Thanks id Software!

Toshiba Satellite with its preinstalled Windows 98 SE OEM.

2 Intel MacBook Pros:

1. 13(.3)" 9,2; April/mid-2012; MD102ll/A model; unibody, Intel Core
i7 CPU (2.9 GHz; dual core, 4 MB L3 cache (Turbo Boost up to 3.6
Ghz)), updated macOS Mojave v10.14.6 (for old 32-bit apps) & 64-bit
W10 Pro with Boot Camp, 8 GB of 1600 MHZ DDR3 SDRAM, Intel HD graphics
4000, & Micron 500 GB SSD (FileVault enabled; replaced its 5400 RPM
HDD due to a physical drop). I still use it once in a awhile. Also,
BootCamp with 64-bit W10 Pro.

2. 15" A1260 model, unibody; 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB (667 MHz)
of DDR2 SDRAM, 200 GB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT (256 MB of VRAM), &
Mac OS X (El Capitan v10.11.6) from early 2008. Batteryless since it's
very old. I use it very rarely to acceess DeskJet F4280 (copier &
scanner; inkjet colors) from 2008. Printer's options are limited
compared to connected computer software. :(

Now the question is: Do you all still use these old stuff? ;) I still
use my old analog 3.5mm audio speakers, VGA, DVI, Belkin OmniCube KVM
from Y2K (how in the world does it still work today?), PS/2 clicky
keyboard and mouses, Casio Data Bank 150 calculator watch, etc. At
least, those are still useful to me. :)

lol.. going dumpster diving for old computers and then feeling
compelled to request others invest time reading about why you have too
many of them might warrant some self-reflection.

I'm getting the impression you're handicapped or have some other
reason that affords you the time to spend on things like that, and if
that's the case godspeed but just know that's not most gamers.

I saw a documentary once about some guy in the WWII era that had some
sort of bunker he created on a property where he could hide away and
peck at the typewriter and create lots of written shit that was
important to him, under some sort of delusion someone would find it
some day and be amazed and make it important to them. It didn't work
out that way, his only claim to fame was pretty much people gawking at
him for 5 mins over the Internet wondering what level of mental
illness it takes to be that kind of fucktard, nobody actually cared to
read all the meanderings he wrote.

I've got some old tech. devices but not a single old PC. I think part of
that is I was rather late to the PC, I think my first one was about 1996
or something, and I just don't have the sense of nostalgia for things
like DOS. The other part is that around 2000 was the last time that I
actual bought a complete PC and now I just give it a refresh when I
think it's needed which has become less and less as the games I play are
far less demanding on even 'under performing' hardware than they used to be.

I've got a stash a motherboards/CPU's/RAM from previous builds and I
really don't know why I still keep them. Much the same as the various
cables that I've accumulated over the years - who knows when a SCART
cable may come in handy!

Actually yes. Although usually not very long. ;-)

I tend to fire up old games fairly frequently. I just don't stick with
them. This is usually because

a) they're either really, really good games (Ultima, Day of
the Tentacle, etc.) and I've played the shit out of them,
to the point where there's no mystery to them anymore, and
I quickly get bored walking down the same path for the
100th time, or

b) they're really, really bad and I can't bear to stick
around long enough to get to the end. This usually has more
to do with control issues (oh Gog, did old DOS games have
some terrible controls!) than production values (although
anything with PC speaker is anathema to me).

But either way, I enjoy firing up the old classics for... well, their
historic value. To see what the games were like in the 80s and 90s,
and marvel at how much the developers managed to do with so little in
the way of computing resources, and compare to how far we've come.

I rarely play them long enough to actually 'count' as something I
played in our monthly "What Have You Been Playing" threads, though.
But just over the past few weeks, I've peeked at Loom, Ultima
Underworld, Kings Quest 6, A Mind Forever Voyaging, Crescent Hawks
Revenge, SimCity 2000, Links 386 Pro, and more.

Admittedly, most of my retro-gaming is done through emulation these
days. It's just easier overall (and more comfortable, since the old
computers don't have access to the Good Chair). But there are some
that just don't work well in emulation, or just feel better playing on
original hardware, and occasionally I will fire up the old, noisy
hardware to experience the originals on period-accurate hardware.

I had to downsize severely my last couple moved and got rid of most of
my old phyical media games and any old computers. I've still got one
spare mb (with cpu & ram) and vc in storage, and I kept a drawer of my
very favorite games in my desk.

I've still got a couple bookcases of D&D books and magazines, I couldn't
bear to let those go as I occasionally think I'll find some group to DM
them for, but it looks less and less likely as time goes on.

I've got manic-depression and it led to me losing most of my stuff.
1000s of CDs and games. Steam is great to have because my games stay on
it. I have two accounts because I went a long time without a phone to
be able to recover my account.

I was on the way up then I found out the hard way that you can't say
whatever you want to to girls - one of them poured a milky potion on my
Alienware keyboard and I didn't get back from the dentist in time to
save it. Have to look into how much a replacement keyboard costs or
else to try plugging one into the USB slot. In the meantime I'm doing
pretty well on my 12 GB RAM Dell. The main effect is now I can't play
MTG:Arena because it's a bit above spec.

Was doing well on MTG:Arena. Made it to Mythic level on Jan. 14th and
it's a monthly cycle ending on the 30th. Didn't get to see if I would
clock in at 100% (max mythic level then you get a numerical rank). I
like the new cards. There's a combo many people are using: Enduring
Tenacity and Bloodthirsty Conqueror. All you have to do is get them on
the board and attack with the Conqueror and the game is over with a win.
You could weasel out of it but I've never seen it happen. For example
the Bonehoard Dracosaur, Flying First Strike 5/5 could defeat the
Conqueror without taking any hits. I can't think of a way to do it
without First Strike or direct creature destruction at the perfect moment.

I have a basic computer and a doorstop. I don't intend to buy anymore
computers here at the center because Play-Doh is more appropriate to the
setting.

I had to let go of my tabletop RPG books several moves back... and
then expensively claw them back as PDFs. ;-)

I actually don't regret getting rid of the hard-copies, but I do
regret HOW I disposed of them: they went all of them to recycling. But
this was long before tabletop gaming made any sort of resurgence, and
the books themselves were considered valueless.

Still, I wish I'd hung onto them in storage for a few more years. I'd
still have gotten rid of them eventually, I think, but I could have
sold them instead of tossing them.

Hey, that's another reason for me to keep my Win95 box. That 3DFX card
and Gravis Ultrasound have value! I'm not hoarding, I'm *investing*
for the future! ;-P

Values? Like how much? :-P Do my old used SB Audigy 2ZS, GeForce 8800 GT
(512 MB of VRAM), etc. have high values? ;)

Not yet. But hang on to 'em for another sixty years and you'll be able
to resell them for half their original value! Two-thirds if they're
Mint-In-Box!

Do it for the grandchildren! ;-)

Oof. I did get rid of most of my 4e D&D books last move, but I sold
them, surprisingly there was actually a reasonable market for them.

Sold the PS2 and most of the games for it for cheap to a used console
store, which I still somewhat regret.

All the old PC games I didn't want, no one else did either (including
the game store) so they ended up in the trash. I believe I listed them
here too but had no inquirers.

Yes, some rarer books and stuff could be worth the time and at least
they stay in circulation. Or drop them off for a pitance at a comic book
or used book store.

When I was working in a security company office, I used to put my
unwanted computer games and others on a recycle/an etrash area so anyone
could just take them for free before they were taken away. We also put
other stuff there too like hardwares. Most of the stuff were broken
(e.g., burned MacBook power plug) though though. Once in a while, there
were good stuff! Like one time, I took an unopened external USR
Sportster 56k dial-up modem! I tested it before taking it home! However,
I never got to use it at home before I moved and never got the old
school copper landline service again. I still have it in storage! I also
saw old used mouses, clicky keyboards, etc. I took those to use in my
cubicle and then home. It was so nice! I miss that place. Yesterday was
hit my decade anniversary of being laid off from there. :(

Selling them is tedious. I just don't bother unless I can sell them
fast. I could give them away too.

I wished we had (t(ele/rans)porter/portal)s to easy go to places easily
and quickly. We could have our own place to get rid of stuff! :P
