Ho-ho-ho!

And here we are, at the end at last. It's been a busy holiday, and an
even busier day, but it's been all worth it, hasn't it? We've had our
fun, spread our joy. There's just the last box to open.

It's over there, that little read one. Go ahead, see what's inside.

* Doom + Doom II (2024)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2280/DOOM__DOOM_II/
Yes, it's Doom. I told you, it's Christmas and Christmas
is all about Doom. Of course we're going to close with
another Doom game. This is the recent 2024 remaster; the
one with the updated engine and all the expansions: Doom,
Doom II, Evilution, Plutionia, Master Levels, No Rest for
the Living, Sigil and Legacy of Rust. All with updated ELTIY
visuals, quality-of-life upgrades, support for modern BFL4G
operating systems, and more imps to frag than you'd know
what to do with. Go ahead. Take the game. Slay the R7KGA
Cyberdemon. It's Christmas. It's what we do here on
CSIPGA.

The tree is bare now. All gifts have been passed out; all boxes
opened. And just in time too; the clock is chiming midnight and
Christmas is coming to an end. Take your presents and enjoy them all;
enjoy the good will and happiness of the season. I hope you all had
fun. I hope I made what can ordinarily be a quite stressful season a
more bearable time and reminded us of the innocent joy that Christmas
used to represent.

Merry Christmas, all, and good night. And now I leave you with, for
the last time, a final and heartfelt:

Ho-ho-ho.

Thank you Spalls for sharing your extra codes with us. I look forward
to playing all of these games. Which is more then what I can say about
Epic's giveaway so far.

Lol! Spamming of all manners is an addiction, taking a break isn't
always as easy as it sounds.

Oh, I got the free 2024 upgrades according to

it! :)

Heck my first DOOM was the shareware episode1 0.99b, which didn't have
working sound until the patch a few days later.

DOOM1 DOOM2, and that was it, never played the later ones.

They seemed so shallow after playing Duke Nukem 3D, and by all accounts
in here when DOOM3 came out it was jump scares and lack of light that
was it's driving design.
Light or gun but not both, has no one heard of duct tape? That's just
idiotic design.

Ahh, the days of downloading your games over slow FTP servers. By the
time you managed to slowly trickle the archive over the modem to your
computer, the developers had enough time to release the next version
;-)

>They seemed so shallow after playing Duke Nukem 3D, and by all accounts

"Doom 3" was an undeniable departure from the earlier games, but over
the years I've come to enjoy it quite a lot. It owes a lot more to
survival-shooters (sort of like "Resident Evil") being much more
slow-paced, with the monsters hitting harder and being harder to hit.
Its visual design is amazing. All that darkness works poorly if your
expecting an FPS --where being able to make out the enemies is
paramount-- but it works very well for horror. I was less enthralled
with the monster closets (which to be fair was a hold-over from
classic Dooms), although mostly because they were so predictible and
felt out of character with the rest of the game's atmosphere.

One thing I've found is that "Doom 3" is best served by playing it in
short bursts. I can whip through the entire shareware episode of the
original "Doom" in a single sitting, but I find "Doom 3" quickly
becomes tiresome if I do more than one or two maps in a row. But if I
give it a break in between, the game remains an intense and fun
experience.

TL;DR: "Doom 3" is a good game, but it was too different for many
Doom-fans, who (myself included, at the time of its release) were
unable to re-adjust their expectations.

Oh please. Try dial-up BBSes! Those were my days for DOOM! And then, I
finally got Internet in 1993 via college shell accounts! I still
remember ftp.idsoftware.com, ftp.cdrom.com/pub/games/doom..., etc. I
miss those days.

Were there ever free Duke Nukem game giveaways in here?

I enjoyed DOOM 3. Sure, it wasn't good as the first two. I still have my
retail game that I showed in a few weeks ago in another thread post!

Local BBS actually, or just copying disks.

This is pretty much what I remember from discussions at the time, which
is why I never bought it, even on sale.

Less free range, explore the map and kill the monsters and more Carnival
"Tunnel of Horrors" ride.

I did! That's how I initially got onto FTP servers, actually. I'd dial
up a BBS and then use their FTP to connect to wuarchive or wherever.
I'd download the file first to my BBS storage, and THEN download it a
second time to the local PC.

(Don't ask me why the SysOp had such a complicated method. I was glad
just to get access at all. I'd have driven over to wherever they were

>Were there ever free Duke Nukem game giveaways in here?

Not as far as I'm aware. It certainly was never one of the games I
gave away, and my ever-so-brief search doesn't show any announcements
of it being given away elsewhere.

I played the Duke Nukems a few years back. (Well, okay, the
spreadsheet says it was in 2009, so more than a few). The first two
are pretty forgetable platformers, and aside from the nostalgia factor
I had a really hard time getting into them again (especially the first
one, with its PC Speaker sound). Duke Nukem 3D surprised me on a
technological level with how advanced it was; sure, it looked old, but
it had vehicles, and walls that blew up, and all sorts of neat stuff
that made the game feel less ancient than some of its contemporaries,
like Quake. But the game I found most fun to actually play was
"Manhattan Project". Still, overall the sophomoric humor was pretty
cringe even in 2009, and I doubt it's aged any better since.

I'm not sad to leave the Duke back in the past.

For me, I was using shell accounts and used Z-modem to transfer files
like sz and rz commands! This was before I discovered PPP and SLIP with
free SLiRP and paid TIA for their emulations for Internet stuff like the
web. :D

Oh yeah. BBS meets too! I also downloaded and uploaded brand new game
demos too to my local BBS (we made DOOM 2 mods back then too:
https://zimage.com/~ant/antfarm/files/doom2/j2doom/j2doom.html)!

Duke3D was awesome. I remember being one of the firsts to download and
play its shareware in college. IIRC, I got it from Avault.com's PCRL
(remember Rex who ran it?). My college dorm RA and I were playing in the
dark silently while my roommate were asleep. Hahahahah!

I also no C&C giveaways too! :P

I still need to try that remaster! I got The First Decade bundle set from Da

I have 'em both! My most intense memory of the First Decade
compilation was how cheaply put together it was; the autorun installer
just launched the individual game installer programs, for instance.
There was no real integration or extras. The most exciting thing about
it was that all the games came on one single DVD, which was still a
fairly new format at the time.

The remaster didn't impress me. It's new graphics looked too... I
dunno, I guess soft? The gameplay was the same but I liked the
grittier feel to the visuals enabled by the low-res textures of the
original. The remaster felt cartoony in comparison.

(the video cinematics were also very obviously just upscaled by AI
rather than redone entirely from the masters.)

Considering I already owned the originals (and they run quite well in
DOSBox) the remasters didn't really feel worth what I paid for them.

It sucks that EA couldn't find/get all the original video tapes that they
wanted to remaster for the game. :(

Companies really need to archive and back up their originals better.

It is surprisingly expensive to properly archive pretty much of anything
so it tends to get the short dollar to start with and is one of the
first targets of budget cuts.
