Once again, on Epic, on Thursdays. You know what I'm talking about.
This time, the game in question is:

* Dragon Age: Inquisition
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/dragon-age-inquisition-game-of-the-year-edition-2f0cbd
First thing to first: yes, you will still need an EA/
Origin account for this game; the fact that it's free
on Epic isn't a run-around that requirement. Otherwise,
it's exactly what you expect; the third game in
Bioware's home-brew fantasy CRPG series. This iteration
went full open-world, complete with unnecessary crafting.
It's not a bad game but it wasn't a particularly
compelling one either; it was rote. Paint-by-numbers.
Formulaic Bioware to a tee. It's an okay game, just
completely lacking in notability or surprise. If you
want a well-made but typical western CRPG, you might
as well play this one over any other.

It's rare that Epic offers a triple-A game, so grab this one before
its gone. Or don't. I don't get paid either way. ;-)

This is a definite step up from recent game giveaways. I will take it
without complaint. Thanks Spalls.

Unfortunately I already had it, and as it's only through EA, I can't get
another copy elsewhere.

I found it very repetitive, and combat basic, large map for large map
sake. I couldn't finish it due to all that. Lots of people love it

Acshually....

"Origin allows multiple copies of the same game. Or it did (I haven't
tried recently). And sometimes it didn't work. But its hwo I ended up
with multiple copies of Battlefield 3 and Dead Space 2."...

.... which is what I wrote before I actually fired up Origin for the
first time in months to verify what I had written. The above /was/
true, but now those duplicate copies have vanished.

(Which honestly seems a bit like theft, but I'm sure there's something
in the EULA which allows EA that privilege, and anyway, it's not like
having multiple copies actually got me anything or that I could sell
the dupes. They just made my Origin library that little bit bigger.)

So, yeah, I guess there's no sense to claiming a game from EA if you
already have it on Origin.

I'm like 90% convinced that all the praise "Inquisition" earned was a
reaction to how disappointing "Andromeda" was. Something alone the
lines of, 'Oh look, Bioware still /can/ make a game worth playing!',
even if "Inquisition" wasn't all that good itself. At least it wasn't
a complete mess.

But, yeah, I got a similar feeling from "Inquisition"; its giant open
world existed more to tick a box than out of any need for an open
world. It just made the experience a lot more grindy, as far as I was
concerned.

But YMMV. A lot of people had fun with it. Who am I to tell them they
were wrong? ;-)

Those of us who came of age watching Monty Python /totally/ expect the
Inquisition. Dragons, though, still surprise me. So I'm not sure where
I stand overall.

Like the fact that the EULA says you don't actually own any of those copies?

There's apparently a list of mods which cuts the game down to about 40
hours. RPS wrote about it here:
https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/this-handy-list-of-mods-makes-dragon-age-inquisition-short-enough-to-play-again-before-dreadwolf-comes-out

and the list of mods is here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qe6mn9eQdCFyXWdgdNk-wBD4OtFAUsNCK4lRplvkXcY

I'm not sure if I should play with those mods or try to have the full
experience. I've never played Dragon Age anything but since it's a
freebie I thought I'd give it a try.

This quote from the article about the next one is hilarious:
"The tradition of being annoyed by Dragon Age while simultaneously
loving it looks set to continue."

I never loved Dragon Age, but There were things I did love in the first
game, and a lot more I was annoyed with. I occasionally have a passing
thought to replay it, but it's rejected instantly, and thus much more
quickly than other games that passing thought about replaying comes to me.

It also says DA 2 is a lot shorter, maybe I need to get and play that
one now.

I never modded either, now I've got the thought I should replay them
with mods. The mod for more party banter the article mentioned sounds
good.

On the other hand, I don't remember a single thing I actually liked
about DA 3 and would want to re-experience. I never did finish it
though, so perhaps I missed something, but I got fairly far.

I think a lot of the excitement about the original "Dragon Age" game
was not so much about the gameplay itself, but because what the game
represented. It was a return to 'classic' CRPG stylings; top-down
'isometric' viewpoint, with a large party, and tactical combat. It had
been a style of game that had been - by 2009 - largely supplanted by
first- (or over-the-shoulder third-) person RPGs. Even Bioware - which
had (arguably) perfected the genre with their "Baldurs Gate" games,
had switched over to the more 'modern' style.

So Bioware returning to the traditional CRPG mechanics was celebrated,
and "Dragon Age: Origins" got a lot of praise from that alone. The
game itself... well, it was still quite good, but it wasn't (IMHO) all
that exceptional, and it really dragged in parts.

"Dragon Age 2" is a completely different beast. It returns more to the
'new' style of gameplay, eschewing a lot of what made "Origins" so
exciting to CRPG grognards. It wasn't /quite/ as twitch-based as, say,
"Mass Effect 2", but it was a very noticable movement back in that
direction. Worse, however, was its level design. There was /a lot/ of
re-use of the same maps. That - and the loss of different origin
stories/missions for each protagonist (in fact, the complete cutting
of more than one protagonist!) made the game feel shorter than it was.
DA2 may be a bit quicker to complete than DA:O... but not by much.
