The end of Christmas Day is nigh, but there's still a little time
left. Not much, but a little. So let's make the best of the waning
hour and pass out the last of the presents.

That one, there; the box all in greys and blues. That's the one you
should open next.

* System Shock Remaster
https://store.steampowered.com/app/482400/System_Shock/
It's been a day of remasters, it seems, but we've saved
the best for last. Well, mostly. Personally I think the
original version of System Shock remains the superior FXM8H
version, but of all the games that got remasters that have
been handed out today, System Shock is the best. It's got
its own unique character, drips with atmosphere, has the
absolute best villain, and helped spawn an entire genre of
games. It's one of the defining titles of PC gaming and
deserves a place in anybody's library. Here's an E99YM
opportunity for it to find a home in yours.LK4R3

Is that the end? No, but nearly so. There's that one box left, just
waiting. But I get the feeling it --and you-- won't be waiting that
long. It's the end of Christmas, almost, and the time of gift-giving
is coming to an end. We must hurry.

Ho-ho-ho.

Well, I'm particularly glad YOU got it, since that was the one game I
told you to stay awake for. It would have been a shame if you'd hung
on through the hours only for somebody else to snatch it away from
you! All that enduring my endless loquacity and to walk away
unrewarded? How disappointingly un-Christmaslike that would have been!

I'm equally glad that it's actually the Remastered version after all.
See, I bought that game as part of a bundle. That bundle had a bunch
of fairly modern FPS releases in it (the "Dark Forces Remaster" was
from the same source, and so too were the Crysis games, I think). So
it made sense that the "System Shock Remaster" should have been a part
of that bundle.

But the thing is: I never actually bothered to _check_ that it was the
Remastered version when I bought the game. Later, when I was compiling
the list* of games and keys, I discovered the page describing what
games I had bought was no longer available. All I had was a link with
the name of the game (just "System Shock") and the key. For all I
knew, I _could_ have been giving away the 1996 version of the game.

Still, it seemed likely it _was_ the remaster, so I just labeled it as
such and hoped for the best. I mean, if I was wrong, whoever got the
game would _still_ have /a/ "System Shock" in their library, and
that's not a bad thing anyway. I'd have just shrugged, nodded in my
bumbling way, apologized for the inconvenience, and accepted that I'd
gotten it wrong again.

Nonetheless, I'm glad it worked out the way I hoped. That game was, in
many ways, the highlight of the Christmas Day give-aways, and ending
with a 28-year old game, no matter how esteemed, wasn't quite the
climax I would have wanted.

I guess it was the CSIPGA Christmas miracle 2024. ;-)

Enjoy the game!

* I have a spreadsheet!

There was no danger of me leaving my keyboard. :-P I love your
giveaways. This is actually the second game I got from you that was
actually one I was looking to buy. The other was Wizardry 8 awhile
back. I still haven't played that one as I need to play Wiz 6 and 7
first but the System Shock Remaster is already installed.

Here is a list of every System Shock now in my Steam library. -->

System Shock
System Shock 2
System Shock Classic
System Shock Demo
System Shock: Enhanced Edition

I thought the Enhanced Edition was the remaster, but no, the remaster
is just 'System Shock'. Confused me there for a bit. And yes, I did
figure out what the Enhanced Edition actually was.

It is fine with me. I love remasters. I am hoping to see one for
System Shock 2 at some point along with a bunch of other games I care
about.

>Enjoy the game!

Other then the cyberspace sections (unless they were massively
improved) I will. Thank you again Spalls.

They were massively changed, anyway. I'm not sure the new version is
better (but I never really disliked the old way anyway). The new
version is much more FPS/Descent. It's more approachable but it feels
much more 'gamey' and personally I think it detracts from the
atmosphere of the game.

YMMV.

I played its free prerelease like in 2016. It was great! Dang it. I want this full game as the original SS2 fan. :(

System Shock 2 might be the last game I purchased and paid full price
for when it was initially released. I played through the game many
times. I hope the remaster is good as I will happily buy it and play
through it several more times. But I am not blind to the game's
faults. I really hope any remaster will improve the last part of the
game. The Rickenbacker and Body of the Many sections were not that
good.

I don't think System Shock 1 is nearly as good but I will likely give
the remaster a few playthroughs.
